I was wondering if it was that bad to remove the scope from the rail over and over again for example if it's in a hard case and you remove the scope to have it fit in some where else..

Re: is it bad to remove scope?

Depends on the scope base/rings you are using, if you have a repeatable setup that is fairly rugged and torque it down properly, I don't see a issue.

At the end of the day, it seems like a lot less effort to pick up a case that your rifle will fit in, especially when you consider having to check and re-zero your optics every time you remove the scope.

I don't see that it would "hurt" anything (of course...depending on your mounting setup, you may spend a lot of time/rounds down range/money regaining your zero each time you remove/reinstall the scope). Other than that inconvenience, it won't likely hurt the scope itself, base, etc.

Why don't you just get a case that properly fits the rifle with the scope attached so you don't have to go through the B.S. of removing/reinstalling the scope everytime you take the rifle out to shoot it?!?!

Re: is it bad to remove scope?

I'm trying to avoid having to buy two cases..basically I was going to put two scoped rifles in one case but witscopes the case isn't wide enough.oh well I'm make do thanks for the info.

If the whole issue is trying to avoid purchasing another case then you should look into the MidwayUSA Pro Series Scoped Rifle Gun Case.

These are soft cases available in several lengths. I own two myself. They have shoulder straps and padding at least an inch thick on both sides. Provides good protection for your gun. Midway puts these on sale regularly for around $30 or so.

If you are going to carry two rifles to the range, the Midway cases (or similar product)is a much easier way to do it. I own a double rifle size hard case that I no longer use because it is a PIA.

All joking aside, I understand what you are attempting to do, but the pain of having to uninstall/reinstall optics, combined with the need to resestablish your zero each time you do so, further combined with the wasted time/ammo you are spending, far outweighs the convenience of only having to drag one case with two rifles with you to the range! Hard cases, which already weigh a lot just empty or with a single rifle/accessories, are nothing but a pain in the neck for casual trips to the range. For long-distance trips or airline travel...go for the hard case (Pelican, Storm, Starlight, etc.) which are a must (if for nothing more than to keep the baggage monkeys from f---ing up your expensive gear). For range trips, the lightweight, soft cases are the way to go.

There are plenty of good alternatives for quality soft cases, including some that will allow you to carry two full-size, scoped rifles (depending on their OAL). Run a search here and you should find a couple threads on this issue within the last couple months for alternatives.

Re: is it bad to remove scope?

You should be fine if you've got quality base and rings.

I do think that if you've spent the money to get this far, go the rest of the way and get a case that fits your rig.

Re: is it bad to remove scope?

I really dislike cleaning a rifle with a scope on it, so I normally pull it off for better access to the action.

I torque the crossbolts back to 65 in/lbs when I'm done, which usually puts me within 1/2 MOA.

Unless you always shoot in the same conditions, temperature changes are still going to affect your zero even if you never touch the scope.

Re: is it bad to remove scope?

I guess i was just trying to be lazy and kill two birds with one stone. I have a bag for my DPMS LR308 and I'm planning on picking up a .338 bolt rifle (and soft case for it)but I'm not made of money and would rather buy one nice hard case then two and spend the money on ammo or something of that nature. The DPMS has A.R.M.S QD rings btw..
