Gunsmithing Is it ok to leave Kroil oil in the rifle's bore?

Re: Is it ok to leave Kroil oil in the rifle's bore?

As a matter of fact it's a very good practice. Except when a cold bore shoot is important and then that's open to debate. It's best to always have a light coat of oil in the barrel for that first bullet to ride on. Reduces copper fouling build up a great deal. I like to use something with just a little more viscosity than Kroil oil but it will work.

Been using it for years with no negative results. Kroil is your friend

Re: Is it ok to leave Kroil oil in the rifle's bore?

I have Kroil, and have used it off and on for a few years.
Last week I did a deep cleaning on my rifle, and before I put it away I left a light coat of Kroil in the barrel, edit: add, and in chamber.
At my next range session I shot it without wiping it out and my first few shots were high,1/2", and the bolt was hard to lift (pressure sign).
I seen this as a good learning experience, and will wipe it out with a dry patch before shooting it next time.
I hope this little nugget of information helps people in regards to the use of Kroil.

Re: Is it ok to leave Kroil oil in the rifle's bore?

When I clean a barrel, and that isn't often, a patch with Kroil is the last thing down the barrel before I put the rifle away. Before I shoot that rifle I sometimes run a dry patch through the bore, but sometimes not.

Re: Is it ok to leave Kroil oil in the rifle's bore?

It's perfectly fine to leave Kroil oil in the barrel bore. But do not count on it to provide rust protection. It is a light, penetrating oil that will run easily.

So if you store your firearm in any position which will allow the oil to flow it may run off and provide little or no protection. And of course you'll want to patch out as much as possible before shooting.

Re: Is it ok to leave Kroil oil in the rifle's bore?

I have shot literally hundreds and hundreds of groups starting with a light coat of oil in the barrel and have never run into pressure issues. If the chamber has a coating on it and your running high pressure loads then you can get a little more thrust on the bolt but out of a 308 that's not much.
I know some of you guys never clean but for those that do and pay attention to the copper fouling, try this. The anology I use is if you were on a motorcycle and had to lay it down, would rather have your ass slide on dry pavement or wet? Dry steel against dry gilding metal means gauling. After the first shot you have powder fouling as a lube. All it takes is 3-4 drops on a patch and work it into the barrel. You might be surprised at how much less jacket fouling you have.

PS I don't use Kroil for this because it is a light penetrating oil. Any gun oil will work.

Re: Is it ok to leave Kroil oil in the rifle's bore?

I clean my rifle after every match,,so that usually equates to about 120 rds with a practice day in there. Every cleaning ends with a wet patch of Kroil, followed by a dry patch. I do it because my bullets told me their asses prefer to slide on wet pavement.

I do take the extra minute to mop out the chamber.

Cold bore shots are spot on. But I attribute that more to the quality of the barrel, than the Kroil though.

Re: Is it ok to leave Kroil oil in the rifle's bore?

Thank you all for your information
I just came back from a competition yesterday and didn't have the time to clean the rifles thoroughly, you know family, work, studies on my way, So i just run 3-4 patches with kroil so the rifles can wait until i find the appropriate time to clean them
by the way i clean my rifle after each shooting session approximately 40 rounds.

Thanks

Re: Is it ok to leave Kroil oil in the rifle's bore?

i always think of kroil as a penetrate oil that permeates to the molecular structure and tooling marks and any fire cracking that may exist in the barrel......and .....if you do not remove it before use will induce higher pressures and start a damaging process due to hydraulic movement upon the steel.

me thinks sticky bolts today, bulging barrels tomorrow,,,,,loose bores of course won't pick up copper....as opposed to tight lapped ones that won't see a build up also.....

Re: Is it ok to leave Kroil oil in the rifle's bore?

Ive been using a little eezox for corrosion protection of just the bore for storage after cleaning and it seems to work well...But I do like kroil for cleaning

Re: Is it ok to leave Kroil oil in the rifle's bore?

Yes, I always am sure to mop the chamber. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Mark Housel</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Is it important to insure that this oil isn't also in the chamber?</div></div>

When the case expands I want it to grab and not slip. (Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.)
