I mounted a 8-32x56mm NF scope onto my new GAP f-class rifle today with a set of Max 50 BO 1.125" high rings. The scope is sitting higher than I'd like (exactly 0.235" above the barrel), so I need to buy a new set.

Best I can tell the next shorter size offered by either BO or NF is 1.0" high. Either of these would leave my scope positioned 0.110" above the barrel. This may be just fine, but with no adjustable cheek on my stock, I think it's best to go as low as possible. I see that TPS sells a .925" high ring which would position my scope only 0.035" above the barrel. Is this too close? Which should I order for my new GAP rifle?

Re: Is it possible to mount a scope too low?

the only time you can go to low, is if you cannot get a proper sight picture due to the fact you cannot get your face any lower on the stock

Re: Is it possible to mount a scope too low?

You can't mount it so low that your objective lens doesn't clear...but other than that you are fine. Unless you can not establish a proper sight picture, as mentioned earlier.

You can get it too low.
I like my scopes as low as possibe, and ran into an issue when mounting one. I felt like I had to CRAM my cheek to the rifle to get a good sight picture.
So, with that said, you might consider the going one with the one with a little more clearance, because you do have the adjustable cheek piece.

SScott, you mis-read, my A2 McSwirley does NOT have an adjustable cheek piece, and with the big 56mm objective I wouldn't think I could physically go so low that a good cheekweld would be a problem.
I just wish BO made a 0.925" model, I really don't know much about TPS.

That's a name that I'd forgottten all about. I just checked out their site and I like the low-profile base attachment system they offer. With a RB / LP setup they may just be the best solution.
Thanks for the reminder!

Re: Is it possible to mount a scope too low?

Interesting thread for a newbie. Shooting carbines for years I am well aware of the importance of cheekweld, and I imagine it is even more important in the precision rifle world.

Re: Is it possible to mount a scope too low?

Yeah, you can mount 'em too low. I put a Zeiss 2.5-8X36mm conquest on my AR. Used low rings but the objective wouldn't clear the handguard, so I went with medium rings. It clears the handguard now, but I'm going to need some higher rings. With the telescoping stock standard on many AR's, with a comfortable cheek weld my eyes are too high. Can't get my head comfortably much lower. Especially when shooting prone or sitting. Not so much an issue offhand or when kneeling.

Some stocks are more or less straight along the top of the buttstock, others have more drop at the comb. With a straight stock, I believe you can have a scope too low.

Re: Is it possible to mount a scope too low?

I've been in communication with Glen this morning (Yeah, he's actually willing to work early on a Sunday morning; great customer service!) and it appears I've lucked out. He has the exact rings that I'm looking for in-stock and ready to ship. Says they will ship out in the morning.

Oh yeah, thanks again for the reminder there seven!

Re: Is it possible to mount a scope too low?

I've heard of guys having bolt clearance issues, with very low set ups. You must be comfortable behind the rifle, at any height you go with.
