Gunsmithing Is it possible...

Re: Is it possible...

would depend greatly on the contour of the barrel, as you could have to take nearly all of the chamber off to recut to a smaller diameter case. You obviously couldn't do a .308, but a 7mm-08 would be doable pending the contour of the barrel, a sporter would be a no-go.

Re: Is it possible...

the bolt face is bigger on the 7 mag than a .308 based case. you would need a new bolt for sure. the barrel would need to be set back pretty far to make a 7-08 work. you would have some serious pressure issues if you tried a .308 with your 7mm barrel

. you would be better off starting with a short action with the proper bolt face than trying to make that work.

Re: Is it possible...

Gator,
You are talking about two different bolt sizes and action sizes to. The 308 and 7-08 are short action calibers. I'm not saying you can't use a long action for a 308 or 7-08. The bolt diameter for a 308/7-08 is .473. I think the bolt diameter for the 7 mag is .532. Dunno know for sure on that though. If you wanna change to 308/7-08 your gonna need a 30-06 bolt. Its the same .473. PTG is a good way to go with bolts. I'd order one for the -06. Not to mention your gonna need a new barrel in 30 cal. for the 308. I think its a 284 barrel for the 7-08.
Hope this helps a little.

Re: Is it possible...

Nevermind, I had a monster moment of being retarded.

I was meaning to ask if I could rebarrel it and change the bolt. I'm just looking into options for the 7 mag that I have.

Reading a rechambering thread just before asking this probably wasn't the best thing to do. Probably doesn't help that I have a fever and I cough 50 times per minute.

Re: Is it possible...

I'd most likely just go with the new bolt, much easier. This all depends on cost, of course. If it's going to run me more than the price of a new rifle, I'll just trade or sell what I have and get something already chambered for those rounds.

long seated 7wsm, would be a decent choice.

that's your best option.

Just figure into your cost that you will need to pay someone to install the handle and time the bolt to your action when you are figuring, the other option would be to sell your current bolt and buy another used Remmy bolt...

Re: Is it possible...

Thanks for the help, fellas.

I'm not too terribly bright when it comes to firearms. I'm a decent shot and can do some minor stuff but that's about it. Now, you can put a computer in front of me and I can most likely fix whatever is wrong with it.

Because I'm trying to find something my wife can handle... 7 mag and 300wm isn't really an option. lol
