Is Sitka gear worth it?

Re: Is Sitka gear worth it?

The two most popular line of "technical" hunting clothing right now are Kuiu and Sitka. Doubt you can grab any of the KUIU stuff this close to season as they are extremely popular, and as they still deal customer direct ONLY, they are easily overwhelmed with pre-orders and orders when they get a shipment of stuff online.

Don't overlook the Russel APXG2 lines (I have their L2 tundra pullover and love it), and Core4Element on www.camofire.com

I have the C4E element pants/jacket and they are top quality, made of the same stuff that the Sitka 90% stuff is, and are MUCH cheaper if you grab them off of Camofire.com

Other merino baselayers to check out are First Lite as well as C4E if thats what you're looking for.

My current technical system has First light, UA, C4E, Russel APXG2, and Kuiu. No Sitka only because I never find it on sale. Camo patterns don't match but thats not an issue in my mind.

Toughen up bro! haven't you seen the adds with the tough guy wearing the one layer in the blinding snow? That's how well it works-oh, forgot, no pack, etc.

Yes they make it for all temp extremes.

HEre is my .02 cents. For a single layer system it cannot be beat. If you want a layering system there are other good options at cheaper prices that may be as good or better.
When you are talking about a down vest/coat and goretex - you can get the same thing a hell of a lot cheaper in other brands. Unless you are set on the camo pattern (which I love), there are a myriad of ways to get there.

HEre is my system
nts layer - underarmour boxer briefs and smart wool lt weight
base layer - sitka timberline pants, core zip tee
insulation - cabelas ultralite wool vest or jacket - i have both
weather protection - Mt HArdware goretex

I change my smartwool to match the temp zones. I like lightweight pants as much as possible.

Play with it - it is a very good set up but you can easily get yourself into it for a few grand of camo.

Re: Is Sitka gear worth it?

I agree with over_watch. I haved used multiple brands of camo and Sitka was by far the most expensive and completely under-performed. I have summer weight (mesh like) tops and bottoms I paid $46 for both from...yes...i bought from Cabelas. For extreme cold, you cant go wrong with a wool layering system. Of course you have to worry about water proofing, etc. This can go on for days. In short...

IMHO...dont waste your money on Sitka. They look nice and feel nice but dont perform as well as some of the much cheaper products.

Re: Is Sitka gear worth it?

I have ben admiring Sitka gear for some time now. Both the patterns and the versitility of the clothing with thier layering system. It is good to read some solid reviews on their products before I commit myself to purchasing. Thanks guys.

Re: Is Sitka gear worth it?

Sitka uses the same fabrics as everyone else. The fabric does not perform by one brand and not by Sitka. Gore's Windstopper is used by many companies and is the same so it does not perform by brand x but fails in Sitka. The difference is mostly in design and they are all similar. The cut is different too. As far as the price, Optifade and marketing is what the consumer pays far, not the fabric itself.

bi-component base layer has been around for decades, Patagonia was first. Capilene is still the base layer all others try to emulate.

True softshell was used by the Scottish way back in history. Now its a term used like something newly discovered. Scholler brought the fabric to the modern area and term. I think Dynamic is the perfect fabric.

Gore is Gore no matter, one contract term by Gore is, if you use their fabric is has to have a Gore hang tag, its all the same fabric.

Primaloft is primaloft. Others have tried but failed to meet the performance of Albany's primaloft fill.

Malden/Polartec is well....just about every one uses Polartec. Patagonia use to have their own fabric manufacturing but not sure these days.

Are there better systems, are there cheaper systems, absolutely. But, Sitka is a system using the same materials as everyone else, if you want Optifade pay for it, if not buy something else with the same fabric. As far as a clothing system, Patagonia was the first in the modern area to design and offer a true system that works with itself.

Re: Is Sitka gear worth it?

watch camofire.com. Every so often they run awesome deals on Sitka. I got a crap load of Sitka from them when they where offloading the realtree and mothwing getting ready for the big push to sell the optifade camo pattern. its not on there as much but occasionally. In regard to it being worth it? If I had the coin to drop on Sitka thats all I'd have. However there are alot of companies that have jumped on the band wagon. Russle Outdoors has good stuff too. As well as cabelas and Basspro has thier own line basically copying thier idea.

Re: Is Sitka gear worth it?

Sitka is ok. My buddy wears it and in his second season with it.... its already starting to lose stitching and colors fade. Not impressed with it for the price.

Re: Is Sitka gear worth it?

I have used, this being my second season with it and it is good. As KY338 stated the stitching is questionable. It is lightweight, it does a great job wicking moisture, and keeps you warm on the cold days.

That is the only complaint I have with Sitka. Made in china.

Re: Is Sitka gear worth it?

Sitka: mostly China but good stuff, like the athletic cut, just got back from a wet and cold goat hunt in BC and it performed flawlessly

Kuiu: mostly Canada and better stuff IMO, founder of Kuiu was a founder of Sitka before selling out, Kuiu uses Vais camo as well as a new pattern called Verde on the way

I am happy with what I have from both but I do feel a bit better about the Kuiu overall
