Is the 20" DMR AR worthwhile building?

Looking at another AR build. Already have a NM 20", an M4 as well as an Mark 12 Model 0. Read about the 20 inch DMR AR as an interesting alternative, but wondering if its really worthwhile building.

Realizing they are two completely different platforms, I already noticed very little difference in performance between the Mark 12 Model 0 and the NM 20 AR with a scope. On paper, I figure the 20" DMR is more like the NM except its a dedicated flat top and I can put a Geseille DMR or Match trigger along with a DD quad rail on it.

Anyone shoot a 20" DMR AR?

Why not just have a NM 20 like the Rock River A4 or compass lake A4 with detachable carry handle.

Now you have basically a DMR you can put a scope on or put the carry handle back on it and shoot it as NM for service rifle.

That's all it is -- a flat-top NM equivalent. Add optics, training, and 77s and go to war.

It's just hardware.

Sinster - where is the real point of diminishing returns on barrel length for this application given down range energy of a 77?

20" seems like it is 2" of barrel for no real return. 16" seems to really start running out of gas @ 600 though.

Thoughts?

TIA

Good luck

I built a DMR type rifle. It has a WOA 20" DMR barrel, VLTOR upper, Daniel defense lite handgaurd and a Geseille DM trigger. It shoots well but I'm still developing an load. I would say if you already have a 20" NM and an SPR you pretty much have that feild covered. Maybe try another caliber. A rifle in .204 Ruger uses the same magazine and bolt. Just a suggestion.

77s at 600 yards is tough on round bullseyes with scoring rings, but against E-types it's still chugging and killing. It is the best (economical) Infantry Trophy rapid-fire bullet the Army Rifle Team loads. 69s out of an M16 are wind-sensitive past 300.

The Marines did not shoot 80-grain competition M16 ammo for a year or two as they were specifically prohibited by some bureaucratic entity -- and shooting only 77s they were handed their asses at 600 and 1,000 by the Army Team.

77s at 500 from an M4 is very viable -- I've made headshots with an M4 with 5X magnification. Don't have much personal experience at 600 with an M4 -- we've got better tools.

Oh, hell! Now you've done it!

Having completed my kid's LH .22, I'm thinking about a CF upper. I like the numbers for the 6.5MM Grendel, probably on an SPR barrel. I think they hold supersonic to 1200 or something like that, and ought to be pretty good hog and deer loads. I guess I can find somebody to do a LH bolt.
