Is the Anschutz 1903 considered to be a very good .22LR rifle or is it overvalued?

I'm really struggling with recoil and will likely have to transition to .22LR for mostly bench type shooting on paper or steel. Goal is just nice little groups for fun.

I was wondering about the Anschutz 1903 target rifles. they're really expensive but i'm getting pretty frustrated with my current .22LR rifle.

Our local rifle shop will let me pay it off over some months so i might be able to swing it if i'm very careful with finances.

Hoping to get your thoughts if this rifle is worth it or should i look elsewhere. thanks

The Anschutz 1903 is not the top of the Anschutz heap but it is an Anschutz, which means it's better than 99% of the stuff out there.

Having an 64 action Anschutz which the 1903 is, I'd say they're worth the money. I have a 64 MPR, which has the same action, barrel and trigger as the 1903, but it's a repeater in a beavertail stock. Very accurate out of the box, the only upgrade needed is a tuner. I've been able to compete and win against rifles 2 to 3 times the cost. But do realize in the Anschutz world these are entry level rifles.

If your budget doesn't allow for an Anschutz, you may want to look into a CZ. Very accurate rifles starting in the $400 range that can be modified as your budget allows. They also will be releasing their model 457 in the US very shortly which will include a match target model that has an msrp of $750. For the money, it's hard to beat a CZ. I have a 452 American that is ridiculously accurate.

Here's a link about the new CZ 457 Varmint MTR.

Anschutz 64 based actions are designed to be more economically made in comparison to the flagship 54 based series. They are not as accurate as a 54 based action and while the triggers are nice they are not as nice as a 54 match trigger. They do have the advantage of (usually) being lighter than a 54 based gun so the weight combined with cost means they are often used by junior competitors.

If you look for a while and all you need is a single shot you can get used 54's for about the same money as a new 64. If you need a repeater, the equation changes...

great information. i think i'd prefer a repeater. will look into the aforementioned CZ 457 Varmint MTR.

addendum: Wow, that looks perfect. Hope it comes to market locally at a favorable price.

54 based repeaters are either sporter actions which are not the same as 54 match actions and will not have as nice a trigger and aren't as accurate or they will be very rare 54 match repeater factory guns or singleshot conversions by Mark Cheesebro (used to be Mac Tilton of MT guns gunsmith). Cheesbro used to convert match rifles to repeaters for about $475 but is not doing them anymore the last time I checked. All of the above are substantially more dollars than the 64 action repeater I linked above
