That said, "tone" plays a large part in what is comfortable. And, comfortable is not necessarily hearing safe. Few people have an issue with shooting Standard Velocity 22LR without hearing protection. I don't know how many 1000s of various 22lr rounds I've shot without hearing protection. But, that's not hearing safe according to the numbers.
Just a couple of guys arguing about who's girlfriend is hotter...
If we're going down this rabbit hole, we should also clarify that 85 dB is the OSHA standard for continuous noise (like working around machinery), while 140 dB is the accepted threshold for impulse noise like gunfire...You gotta pick one my dude.
