Gunsmithing is there a way to make a 10.5" barrel the legal 16

Re: is there a way to make a 10.5" barrel the legal 16

i'm guessing this barrel is not going on a registered sbr. a 5.5" flash hider permanently attached to atf standards should be real close depending on the length of the threads on the barrel. it may be fine if there is a crush washer in there.

Drill a #30 hole in the bottom of whatever gets you to 16, all the way thru the flashhider and just nick the threads of the barrel, chamfer the edge of the hole and cut a small piece off the shank of the drill bit, insert in hole and weld the pin in, grind to match.

If the receiver is registered as SBR then you can have any length barrel on that receiver. If not registered as SBR then silver soldered a 5.5 brake or flash hider on the barrel.

I think 10.5 + 5.5 = 16

Just do what cobra said so you can remove it later by just grinding the weld out and driving out the pin. Use the 5.5" or a 6" hider if you can find one. I have a 5.5" I will sell you if you need one.

On an AR, the lower is the part that you would register as an SBR, and you can run whatever length you want on it with a valid tax stamp. Just don't play with one that isn't registered because the ATF will nail you to the wall if they catch you.

If I recall correctly the 5.5" FS goes on a 11.5" barrel to make a 16" OAL. The extra inch is lost in the .5" threaded portions of each piece which overlap.

Re: is there a way to make a 10.5" barrel the legal 16

you'd have to thread it on and see, different mfg barrels are slightly different. Might be able to get away with it by using a crush washer and not actually crushing it.

Re: is there a way to make a 10.5" barrel the legal 16

kind of a noob to the sbr game but why not buy a 16" barrel? I mean if you permanently attach a flash hider to a 10.5 inch barrel aren't you essentially getting a longer barrel without the advantage of the extra rifling. Is there some sort of ballistic advantage?
