Re: Is there bigger badder than 338 Lapua?
A gamer? What's that? Does that have anything to do with swinging? Only joking, I was too busy playing real soldiers in my youth, but I think my children are up to speed on the latest shoot'en ups.
I asked the question because its Shot Show time and its been a while since I last got there. I live in England, Great Britain, so knowing that its the States that have all the new toys I thought I would ask. The Gung Ho phrasing of the question was intentional and a bit of fun. Thankfully, contributors have given me some good answers and plenty to research. I've shot .50 and 338 when ammo was issued but that was a while ago and as I was the wrong rank they wouldn't give me one.. so I wind coached most of the time.
Once a year I am invited, because I am a good shot, to go up to Scotland at the end of the rutting season. Its the clear up week to take out the broken and weak Reds. All sorts of longs come out to get the job done as there isn't anything sporting about it. This year 300 WSM and 338 Lapua were used by a couple of the boys making my 308 look a little puny. Any other time a 308 is just fine. Weather can be howling and the range can get quite silly. Something big, bad and fast is needed to punch through in these conditions. A typical scenario would be a Red Stag, with a broken leg, out where he can't be stalked. He has probably been stalked a couple of times so won't let it be done again to him. However, with injuries he will not survive the winter and will starve. Fully fit he would have a hard enough time of it as it is.
So I was just playing with the idea of making up a new long. Just wanted to know what is hot and how far technology can reach. Just checking that I'm not missing something obvious. A bit of overkill, I'm sure that Stag wouldn't care.
Boys toys, don't we just love them.
