Many years ago, Warren Buffet was speaking in front of a group of high school students.
When he asked for questions, one of the students said "Mr. Buffet, does having a ton of money make you an asshole?"
Buffet paused and thought about the answer.
His response always resonated with me... he said: "Money lets you be more of whatever you are to begin with. If you are a good person, money lets you do a tremendous amount of good through your life. With money you can help people and make others' lives better. For a good person, money lets you do more good. But if you are an asshole to begin with? Money just makes you a really big asshole."
I thought that was a pretty good response.
Too bad so many of today's zillionaires (including Warren Buffet, recently) have just become James Bond villains. Wanting to impose their view of 'good' on the world. Whether people want it or not. Everyone's idea of good is not the same. Seems, these days, like their idea of doing good is taking care of the world... who isn't smart enough to go to Harvard. Because they might hurt themselves with their guns and bibles and SUV's and sharp objects.
But, I digress. No. You can't have too much money. You can just be an asshole... and a rich asshole. And a paternalistic asshole. And if you are any of those, a bit of money makes you a James Bond villain.
