So I've got a 10X42 SS on an EGW HD Tacticool base with SWFA house brand low rings. This thing seems to sit too high. I suppose if I had something with a 50mm or > bell it would work well. Should I worry about lowering this? Different base perhaps?

Re: Is this scope too high?

i've got a scope mounted that high on a competition rifle and I'm getting great results. What it comes down to is, as long as you're happy with the eye relief/cheek weld and it functions properly, you won't notice a difference.

people like to mount their optics as low to the bore center line as possible, but I've seen bench rest rifles with mounts 3 times higher than yours still shoot spectacularly.

if you're going for the high speed/low drag super squirrel sniper look you'll definitely want lower rings and some butler creek flip caps.

Re: Is this scope too high?

think the "tactical" community has the ring and base industry dazed and confused at the big swing from 60mm hubble space telescopic behemoths on rifles being the trend a few years ago and all the mounting solutions for that and now the reversing trend of comp shooters who want more rational sized scopes mounted as low as possible. hard to please everyone but to answer your question id say if you can get a cheek weld somehow rock that setup.

That is the most important question. Doesn't matter what it looks like or what is supposed to be cool. If it's comfortable for you to shoot from then use it. If it's too high then get lower rings or base as it looks like your parallax adjustment might hit the base if the rings are any lower.

People get wrapped up in having the scope as low as possible. It really doesn't matter as long as it's comfortable for the shooter.

Re: Is this scope too high?

Looks about as reasonably low as you can mount it. Lower rings, and you'd have interference issues at the rear of the scope. Lower base, and you'll lose some of your long range adjustability (assuming the reasonable way to accomplish this would be to go to a 0 MOA base).

I think your setup turned out quite well.

Re: Is this scope too high?

+1 on getting a good cheek weld. I too have seen scopes "slammed" on rifles, I mean, they are so low I wonder how comfortable it is to shoot.
Here is something that will make you feel better, if it is mounted too low you will pick up the heat off the barrel more screwing up your view. That is just a theory.

Re: Is this scope too high?

I've not found that the height a scope is off a barrel makes any difference. The chance for error may be slightly higher the farther a scope is off the boreline if the gun is slightly canted but if all lined up and tracks right you won't notice a difference.

Like others have said, if you put your head down and get comfy and open your eyes and they are lined up perfect behind the scope then it can't get any better than that no matter how it looks. I think ugly guns shoot better anyway

Re: Is this scope too high?

Thanks for the replies guys. Cheek weld is pretty good. It's been a while since I've spent much time behind a scoped rifle so I'm working on position as much as anything. I'm going to work with the set up I have based on the feedback I've gotten here. Hoping for some range time this weekend...

+1

ring height should be controlled by shooter fit to the rifle, not internet gun photo shoots...
