Hi all,

This all happened when the wife and I had to cancel a 5500 mile road trip from Florida to Yellowstone and back with all the trimmings. I've flown all over the country for years on business but I wanted to see it all from ground level. We had it all set up ready to go on 2021 and we all know what happened then. Since then we've saved even more money and with SS coming in I have to spend some of this stuff. Ain't going to live forever!

So, I'm looking at having a laser built. As I am just getting back into reloading all options are open. I'm looking at a custom bolt, from .223 to 6.5. The last one I had built was by Badrock / Defiance Machine. Love that freaking action!

Suggestions within that caliber range would be most welcome. There are some 'smiths out there that I don't know about that I am sure could put together a laser for me. If you know some please let me know

All suggestions welcome!

Thanks.

A big question would be how far you plan to shoot and what are you shooting (paper/steel vs hunting)

Only having access to a 500 yard range and ringing steel would be .223 for me. 6.5 for same distance if your incorporating hunting

To 1000 yards. It be 6-6.5mm.

Since you reload:

22GT
6x47 Lapua
25 Creedmoor
260 Remington

These are the barrels I tentatively plan on eventually collecting for my rifle

As a starting point, and knowing very little about your desired use, I'd start here. Knowing more about how you intend to use the rifle will help others make recommendations.

Production:
AI

Semi-custom:
Altus Shooting Solutions. They can piece together a parts build with compatible components, e.g., Manners + Zermatt + Proof
Or...order said parts yourself.

Custom (for general use):
GA Precision
Tactical Operations

Custom (if hunting only):
Jarrett Rifles

Recommended caliber based on your stated range: 6.5CM

I like the idea of going with GA. Especially because the 6 GT is now a Sammi cartridge, or will soon will be.

Altus is in N.Florida and that would be great, just an 8 hour drive. That said, I was on their website recently looking for a Defiance action and they seem to be out of everything!

Altus in Baker, FL. And they stock parts. Got a BA done by them this last Mar. they had the Defiance Deviant and the trigger and I sent them the Bartlein MTU blank.

@AccuSol-ERN is the gunsmith there and I thought his work was perfection.

I’m very happy w the entire Altus experience and the gun shoots beautifully.

Nothing wrong with GAP. George and crew have done a lot for the PR industry as a whole, definitely an OG. I know a few guys who still work there from back when I worked there.

If you are looking to stay local and maybe get some Destin relaxation on your trip, I will gladly build you a rifle. As far as parts being instock, great parts and great service sell quickly. Check back often, we keep the shippers hussling both ways for sure.

Thanks! I'm going to call you at the beginning of the week. I'm ready to go with this project.

Just a thought, when I first called Altus and spoke to Al who assisted me with my order, the Deviant was not shown in stock on their site. But Al told me that they had some in being nitrided and would come out of that in a week or two and if I wanted to buy it that day then one of them would be mine.

My point being that they, like a lot of builders, having standing or serial orders with parts manf so there is a relatively steady stream of stuff coming in.

Call them, as you planned, and you may find that what you want may be incoming soon.

P.S. - I don’t understand one of the posters above indicating that GAP was “custom” while Altus is “semi-custom”. They both use actions, barrels, stocks from well known manf. Yes, GAP has its name engraved on the actions they buy and they may (as can be done with some Defiance actions) tweak some action specs, but they are basically production items….no?

Best of luck

I guess I build some pretty good "semi-custom" rifles.......hahaha.......but I may be biased.

Personally, I think Defiance made a mistake by offering custom branded receivers. If I make a part I take pride in my work and put my name on it, not.....JoeDirt Boomsticks......model - Hemi God......on it.
