IYO, Best .30-06 Rnd for Target/Hunting?

Re: IYO, Best .30-06 Rnd for Target/Hunting?

In my 30-06, it shoots 168gr & 190gr matchkings under 1/2" at 100. It's a never ending debate on whether matchking bullets should be used for hunting, but I haven't yet.

I would consider the sierra 200gr prohunter & 208gr A-max bullet to take advantage of it being a 30-06. I'm hoping to try those bullets out next so I can find a load for my rifle to hunt & target shoot with.

Re: IYO, Best .30-06 Rnd for Target/Hunting?

You have to look at your final application. I am partial to driving big bullets. That being said I like a ballance of speed and mass when hunting. In the 06 I generally run a 180gr Combined Technology for deer and a 210 Berger/208 Amax for target. The 180 in my hunting load is sufficient for any game I am likely to hunt in NA.

I've not had the opportunity to apply a 210 or 208 to game a foot yet. That being said shot placement will trump poor bullet performance, either one of those freight trains will take a VA deer.

Cheers,

Doc

I got on Federal prem,165 gr BT's back in the mid ,early 90's bought several boxes back then and still use em for whiteails thru a Win mod 70 with a BOSS, have lost count of the bang flop whitetails.she will put em sub .75 all day.

Re: IYO, Best .30-06 Rnd for Target/Hunting?

I have burned up a bunch of matchkings for hunting. They work just fine, I have been using some of the interlocks recently and they perform just as well on the range as the matchkings.

Re: IYO, Best .30-06 Rnd for Target/Hunting?

I've been narrowing down my options here.. I'm looking at

FGMM 168Gr.

BH Gold 168Gr. Match

Corbon 180Gr. DPX Barnes Triple Schock

Fiocchi 180Gr. Exacta Match

Lapua 185Gr. Mega RN

Gonna do a comparison between theses..

Re: IYO, Best .30-06 Rnd for Target/Hunting?

Well im reloading so dont buy ammo. But for hunting the corbon would be nice, myslef i use 155 grs TSX,(with 47.5 grs of VV N150 and cci br2 in 308) exclusive for my big game hunting, exellent penetration and expansion, and my rifle really seems to like em.
But for target practice i would go with bh or fgmm, will save you a good deal of money in the long run hunting ammo is relatively expensive.

I've not had problems killing things with a 147gr FMJ, but it would be nice to have only one load to worry about...

Anything from 160-180 grain with a soft point will smoke most large game

The OP asked IN 2009 what the best combo TARGET and HUNTING projectile was..

I am going to go out on a limb and guess that it is not a soft point. Another guess might be that after 9 years, the OP has likely chosen a projectile!

Not that there is anything wrong with discussing the Grand Old 30-06. It beats the hell out of discussing the 6.5 Creed. Which when someone starts discussing the 6.5 Creedmoor these days I start thinking of yappy mouthed Crossfitters. In the handgun world it is: Glock 19 this and Glock 19 that. (Usually carries a Glock) :)

As someone who owns a Glock 19 and a 6.5 I’m offended ?

Uber-necro thread. I like it.

My buddy shot some of the 178 ELDx precision hunter out of his 308 last time we were at the range. Got out to 1300 with ease. In an 06 I'm assuming that would be a great loading.
