After seeing a recent thread regarding Jacket choice it got me thinking about how many Jackets & Tops i have connected to our passion and wondering if i was the only 'sado' out there with more gear than he can wear ?

Oh, you're not the only one. I have a thing for jackets, too. I have three lockers and two closets full of them. Most being military issue jackets of various origins, or facsimiles thereof. Nice gear you have there!

Joop , Added a Montane Resolute to the collection but i have sold one and put three others up for sale so i justified it to myself that way . I did think a few others out there might own up to having a coat fetish but they obviously all haven't come out yet !

Well, I have too many myself. The problem I have with it is I don't even wear one much. I prefer to layer up and not have the bulk, well that and I dress to carry. I still see one ocasionally and think I need that, but I have to remind myself that I don't.

Just noticed the OP lives in the UK. Considering the foul weather you can experience there.... I think You may still need a few more.

I'm semi addicted to North Face, Patagonia and Mountain Hard Ware FLEECE. I must have ten total. Then again...We can truly wear fleece here in Montana about every month of the year at some time of the day.

Check out Triple Aught Design (TAD) if you just have to have stuff that nobody else can afford. Great gear and they are very proud of it.

I don't want this thread to go down the £/$ route , it's just about liking jackets and I'm guessing that as we Brits get ripped off with taxes a hell of a lot more than in the US that around 50% of my jackets could be brought in the US for around $200 .
I wanted to hear from guys that had shed loads of jackets , fleeces or anything that might appear excessive regardless of their cost .

Ps. But I will have to check out the TAD gear .

I am also an addict. (hand sheepishly raised). Nice high-tech, high-end jackets are like guns. I have more than I need but not as many as I want! Mt Hardwear and Arc'Teryx are my soft spots. Glad our Winters are not too bad (Alabama) or I'd really be in trouble!

Op, but wait...I dont know the laws over there very well, but I've been under the impression that going to store and purchasing another tool capable of propelling lead great distances at high velocity is a no no. So what you make up for in jackets, we make up for in said tools. If it comes down to spending gun money on a jacket, the gun will win every time. That being said, I would like to add a few jackets to my collection. My problem is location. I live in Houston, TX. The wx here only allows the wearing of a true jacket maybe twice a year. This morning its probably 60 ish outside right now, cold for this time of year. But I'd bet my collection that im going to be down to shorts and t-shirts here by about noon. I have about 5 fleeces that are each worn once a year to justify their purchase. I would like to get a good rain jacket that is just that, a thin layer to keep the water out. If you add any fleece to the jacket, I'd have more moisture inside the jacket than on the outside in middle of a downpour.

I'm also an addict. Just this year I've managed to collect more. Another Otter Gear Patrol Parka, an Arcteryx Atom LT, TAD Praetorian and an Arcteryx Drac soft-shell. This is in addition to an existing collection: Otte Gear Patrol Parka & Hybrid shell, Wild Things Tactical Hybrid shell, Wild Things Tactical Wind-shirt, Arcyeryx Alpha SV, Arcteryx Covert Cardigan, North Face soft-shell, Hart soft-shell, and Rothco SO soft-shell. I'm sure I'm missing at least a couple lol. My wife thinks I have issues.........

I have alot of jackets also, TAD Ranger Hoodie, underarmour(several different), columbia, north face, looking into a Beyond Clothing jacket when they start taking custom orders. I dont feel like a freak of nature but at 6'5 265, slight overweight/athletic nobody makes a jacket so far that I have found to fit my shoulders and arm length withour being way too big in the gut area and showing the back of my belt all the time. Time for equal rights for those of us needing a more sasquatchy fit to our clothing dammit.

Munson , You poor thing not having to worry about jackets but like you say there more money spare to spend on rifles Trust me when i say get yourself an Arcteryx Alpha SV or LT , for that rain Jacket which will be useful for when you venture out of Texas !

SuckitTrebek , ( I don't want to ask ) but i like the look of the Mountain Hardware Lightline as a friend has one and tells me its a lot of jacket for the £/$

sr15match , Great collection you have there and i'm at a loss how our wives think we have issues ? I have to be honest here and mention that in a moment of weakness i've added a Drac this week .

Badger300wm , Your just a big guy , nothing wrong with that as long as your not sitting next to me on the flight Check out a BIG jacket , Arcteryx Dually Belay ( Old Style / model ) as they come up very big and one guy i know thats normally an XXL says his XL is on the big side . He was told that the guy in the shop who is an XL bought a M ? Got to be the old stock though as they've made the new ones smaller .

The Drac is one of my favorite soft shells, it's my go to. Besides it fits a little bigger, is longer cut, little heavier material than the Bravo and Combat shells from Arcteryx. I can wear my LBT Slick-plate carrier under it without a problem.

After buying many Parkas, at the end of last year I bit the bullet and bought one from Canada Goose and its a Bear of a Coat, I also have an Alpha Alaskan Extreme cold weather N3-B which is great if its raining or snowing, and also The North Face Mcmurdo parka (in) Green which is great but the CG is King but it has not been cold enough to wear it yet, but I'm going to let the Mcmurdo one go,

I'm In,,, I just looked up that Jacket and I found one for £449.00/$731.00 and £523.00/$852.00, I does seem a better idea than my CG as its abit bulky for eveyday wear and I need a new Gortex type jacket with a zip out fleece as mine has seen better days.

Check out the Arc'teryx Fisson SV which has the Goretex Pro outer with insulation , I have never gone down this route as i like the layering system which for my usage works great with Baselayer , Atom SV & Alpha SV . The Dually will work in place of the Atom but due to its Length a Theta is needed to cover . You could double up and use two Atom's and do away with the need for the Dually for very cold days when your not on the move much . Looks like the place that i've just had my Dually from at £449 so if you are interested in one PM me and i'll save you a few £'s extra .

This last week we set low temp records three mornings in a row. -25, -26 and -35 degrees F. North of us along the hi line it was a few degrees colder.

Anyway I abandoned my Mtn Hardware conduit jacket and went in search of my old North Face parka. Found not only my old red NF parka but a new, unused slightly softer,lighter NF parka called a Heatseeker.

We hit the NF and Patagonia Outlet when we visit northern CA and the wife's Parents. So I have a mess of North Face as well as Patagonia outerwear. That North face parka served me well this past week as I spent several hours outside shoveling snow, walking the dogs, etc.

This thread got me searching for ALL of my stuff and once I hauled it all out...I think I may be a gear whore! Holy shit but I have a mess of Filson coats, Filson wool vests, assorted parkas, several shells, 100, 200 and 300 weight fleece jackets, and more polypro tops from light to heavy than I will ever wear out by the time I hit ninety. But only ONE single gore tex rain parka! Then again living in semi arid, central MT, east of the continental divide.....we don't quite get rain like Seattle or Portland.

I even found a British Army dpms camo smock I bought in Rainham in the UK at a Surplus store. In my defense. I DO wear it when I walk the dogs in the fall and spring. And it is uber cool.

I may need to start gifting some of this stuff to a few friends. I will never wear this stuff out in 30 years.

I blame the silly low outlet store SALE prices. I simply can NOT pass up a $250 parka for $80. even though I already have 4 of them!

LOL, sounds like your shopping trips are alot like mine, really like my NF Mcmurdo parka but that damn hood is a pain because of how the ruff fits on it because when you pull on the cord to squeeze it up tight gaps appear between the snaps/poppers and the wind blasts right through the gaps and It hits you right in the eyes, My Alphas dont suffer from that issue because the flap that covers the poppers is about 2 inches wide and my CG the Ruff is fixed and wired, But I love the feel of the NF parka and its waterproof, its a shame because its a beautiful coat/jacket.

FN in MT , John , There are shed loads of us Jacket lovers out there i just know it ! Those temperatures are insane and i know just the jacket to wear , Well it's a smock but it's also insane . Best way of describing it would be like a Buffalo shirt on steroids ! The Montane Resolute Smock , But it should come with a temperature warning . It does however have a fantastic hood and is a very well made item that will withstand alot of wear .

G'day Greg, there is one way to tell from a picture of a coat or Jacket if the hood is going to work and that is IF the ruff or the ends of hood come right to the ends of the front flaps of the jacket,

this is the Mcmurdo Parka,,, see how the ends of the Ruff are flapping in the Breeze and there is only 4 or 5 poppers that hold it on to the hood and you end up with 4 inch gaps that let the wind in,

If you look how the Fur Ruff fits on this Snow Mantra this is the best way because it stays put and does'nt beat you to death along with it blocks out all the wind, This is also the same system that is on the Alpha industries N-3B which where ex military Parkas

I've got the Peace Keeper Snow Mantra which is the same Parka but has Duck Down in it and it does not have the round Patch/Badge on it and they are Part of their Military/LE Line of products and they only come in Navy or Green. Oh yeah and it has 16 Pockets and two of them inside are MASSIVE,lol

Anyway this is the one I have and the are alot cheap than the Red one,

Many years back I fell into an old US Army Air Corps , Shearling Bomber jacket. (possibly a B-3)I researched the original maker and ended up sending it back to get both sleeves repaired. Then gave it back to the original owner, who had flown 30 missions over Germany in it back in 44 and early 45. I figured HE was the one who really earned the coat, not me.

Anyway...AVIREX was the company and I bought a replica of that jacket. It was TOO WARM. Unless it was WELL below zero and you were stationary it was too hot. Heavy and cumbersome too. They need to be broken in. DO still have my old Navy goatskin short aviators jacket though.

Anyone have any old shearling or leather military jackets??

As an old Biker I've still got several jackets from that endeavor. A Golden Bear CHP jacket. An absolutely wonderful LANGLITZ jacket and pants I had custom made 20 yrs back. All the rest are Vansons or BMW jackets. Dang but I do like leather!

Greg,,, The fur on that Snow Mantra/Peace Keeper sits about 5 or 6 inches from ya face when its all closed up which is way way better than the NF Mcmurdo parka and the Alpha Alaskan Extreme cold weather Parka you can remove the fur and the hood is great because driving rain cant find away in, that really bugs me getting sleet or hail in ya face,

another thing to remember with hoods is they should allow enough room for you to wear a hat under it and still protect you face,
