Gunsmithing Jewell Trigger fails to reset

So I went out to put some rounds over the chrono today to start to true my data and on my fifth round the Jewell trigger in my brand new Surgeon won't reset.

I am at my wits end. One of the gunsmiths from Surgeon said to "tap the tabs on either side of the sear" but I can't see the sear. The trigger is fully enclosed. Am I looking in the wrong place? all I see when I look down from the top like they are telling me is the safety mechanism on the side of the trigger.

This is about as close to instructions for doing anything with this trigger that I can find but it doesn't say anything about troubleshooting failures.. http://www.ada.ru/Guns/remington/Jewell/manual_en.htm

I did a search but didn't see any previous threads.

Thanks for any help y'all can provide.

Re: Jewell Trigger fails to reset

If you take the bolt out of the action, and look at the top of the trigger, that is the sear. When the trigger was installed, sometimes the sides of the trigger housing pinches the sear causing it not to reset. Just tap on the trigger pins in the opposite way they was installed and see if that works. Might need more engagement or more poundage also.

Re: Jewell Trigger fails to reset

If I remember right when I installed my Jewell triggers in my remington there was a set up procedure for the trigger after installation. Might want to look it up on there website and make sure it was adjusted right, not likely coming from Surgeon but could have slipped through the cracks.

I didn't install the trigger so I have no idea which way it would have been installed.

Where on this are you talking about? I still can't get it to reset.

Re: Jewell Trigger fails to reset

It looks as the sides of the trigger were struck about equal with the "F" and a small amount of metal was pushed out to prevent the sear from "resetting". Need to try to remove the one point on the left side of the trigger or remove trigger and send back to gun builder.

I am guessing that the guys at Surgeon know that.

No the block/sear/whatever won't move at all.

Re: Jewell Trigger fails to reset

I would take the action out of the stock and try the trigger.

Also, I had a run of broken sear tips on one of my Jewell triggers ( caused by pierced primers) that had similar symptoms.

My 2 cents, send the trigger to Jewell and have them check it out.

I happen to be driving within 20 miles of Jewell tomorrow, so...

I did. They were not super helpful. Surgeon is actually sending me a replacement Jewell but I am just going to move to something that someone I trust tells me works a ton better and isn't so touchy.

Re: Jewell Trigger fails to reset

Looks to me like you need more sear engagement. I had a similar problem with my Jewell when I recently had my Surgeon rebarreled. The gunsmith cleaned the trigger workings with lighter fluid (normal procedure) and when I went to shoot it I noticed that when racking the bolt between rounds the firing pin would only lock back every other round. I made adjustments to the sear engagement pin (1/4-1/2 turn) and the problem was gone. Consult your Jewel manual.

My gun didn't come with any manual.

Is that the "front" or "middle" screw?

The manual is a link in your OP </div></div>

Roger that, thanks.
