I'm looking to purchase a JP 18" barrel however had some questions on their barrel life. I notice they claim tens of thousands of rounds through their barrels and still holding MOA due to their Cryogenic treatment. I did not think that treatment had such a dramatic effect and was wondering what other people's experiences were on it? I'm looking for an accurate 18" barrel with a relatively long barrel life so I wouldn't feel guilty blasting with it. Previously, I was looking to buy a superior barrels terebratus, but they sold out within minutes last night.

Jp is a widely used rifle in the three gun market. Those guys dump rounds, and not gently to say the least. I would trust thier claims. I know from experience the barrels are incredibly accurate. To lenthen the life even more buy one of thier thermal dissapators.

I love my JP rifle. It shoots nearly as well with Hornady 55 grain FMJ's as my Noveske Rogue Hunter does with match bullets. (1.13 moa with the 55 grain FMJ in the JP and 1.04 with match bullets in the Noveske) My JP shoots .75 moa with Sierra match bullets. In fact my 18 inch light profile JP three gun rifle shoots nearly as good as my Krieger precision rifle build. I am getting JP barrels from now.

Personally I think the cryo process is a load of crap.....and I used to manufacture barrels. The steel is taken care of so well at the mills in today's day and age that the barrel will either work or it won't. All the magic and voodoo in the world won't change that. The 223, just like the 308 has an inherently long barrel life with factory power loads, especially if all you are trying to do is hold 1 MOA. I've had numerous 308 barrels with an extremely hot load that still hold a half moa group at 100 yards with 4000 rounds. JP makes a great product and the barrels will last so long as you take care of it.

I'm not sure why Ballista wouldn't use a stainless barrel on anything but a hobby/recreational build. If you care to elaborate Ballista I would more than love to listen to your explanation.

from what ive been told Cryogenic treatment does nothing but help the manufacture mill / produce the barrel.... as for improving accuracy = nothing.

No experience with JP, but a Criterion chrome-lined barrel might serve your needs.

The 10-shot group shown below was fired from 100 yards through an 18" CBI barrel. Though one shot obviously strayed, note that lead-tip hunting bullets (65gr SGK) were used instead of match projectiles...

CBI's barrels are less than $300 at Brownells.

I shoot a JP 18" light contour (3-gun etc). It has over 9k rounds through it and still shoots 1/2" groups at 100yds with both 69gr SMK and 55gr V-max loads. The one before that went over 14k rounds before the groups opened up.

Not sure if that type barrel life is due to cryo treatment, but, in my experience, JP barrels do last a loooooooong time.
