...a S&W 500, 4"bbl. There was nobody around to beat sense into me, so now I gotta live with it. I'm not sure if it's a last resort defense weapon or a something akin to a 50 caliber cyanide capsule

Personally, I have never seen much practical use for one.
If you reload, you can save a little, but at around $2 a shot I'd rather own something more useful.
To each his own. If you like it then more power to you, but I didn't like the abuse of firing one.

I just shot one for the first time this weekend. But it was the 8" barrel version, i can't even imagine what the 4" would be like.....
Seriously though, it was fun!
Practically...unless your going to hunt with it, it's just for fun!
After i shot it, i don't think it's really any worse than shooting a .357 out of a snub-nose revolver, it just recoils into your palm....hard.

Take it hunting! Use it for pigs and deer when they walk into range. Sounds like a pretty awesome round!

Does it kill with terminal performance of the bullet (I'm using 350 gr Hornady XTPs) or singe them to death with the muzzle flash. And what's with the interchangagle muzzle brakes?

The interchangeable muzzle breaks are for jacketed and lead bullets. The longer one is for lead, at least for my 8 3/8" one.
