Just finished my savage FCP-K project!

Well it's finally complete (untill I get that evolution chassis). Haven't taken it to the range yet but hopefully in the next week or two I can get it sighted in! Really happy with it so far. However, one thing I'm a little uncertain about is the bolt handle to scope clearance. I didn't even really think about it till I was messing around with it after mounting the scope last night and I have less than an inch of clearance between the bolt handle and the scope. Little awkward to work the action as I'm having to push up with the palm of my hand and pull the bolt back with my finger tips, then reverse. This is honestly my first experience with this size of scope. Any input? Is this normal or will I have to modify something? In any case, I think it's pretty awesome. Pictures soon to follow!

Rifle: Savage FCP-K .308
Base: EGW HD Savage 0 moa
Rings: Badger Ordnance M40A3 USMC 34mm
Scope: Steiner military 4-16x50 w/ illuminated g2b mildot

Re: Just finished my savage FCP-K project!

Sounds like its going to be a great shooter, I have a Savage 111 with a larger scope on it and I must work the bolt exactly like you do, so you are not alone in that respect.

Good to know I'm not the only one. Wonder if there are ways to fix that issue, like a differently shaped/angled bolt lever. Or maybe I'm just being too picky. Idk..

Re: Just finished my savage FCP-K project!

Thanks guys! As soon as I start sending rounds down range I will be doing a review on the whole setup. The only other problem I can see so far, and one I have seen other savage owners complain about is the weak extractor. I have sat in my house and just cycled rounds through the action and noticed the extractor is pretty weak. Rounds almost just kind of fall out rather than be "shot: out of the action. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Re: Just finished my savage FCP-K project!

They are heavy wait till you shoot it and see what happens with a spent case. That being said as long as it kicks them out I like them to fall close to me because I reload.

Well I'm asking cause my 700 .30-06 would throw loaded rounds half way across the room (exaggerating slightly). So when I noticed my savage barely got them out I was a little concerned.

Re: Just finished my savage FCP-K project!

Well I took it out yesterday, though unfortunately I wasn't anywhere I could sight it in. Decided to put a few rounds through it.... WOW... talk about smooth! And what recoil? The brake made it feel like shooting my .17 HMR! I cant wait to get it to the range and really sight this thing in!

Well having not sighted it in yet, it's awesome nonetheless. Super crystal clear, everything about it is beefy, turrets are very easy to manipulate with have very positive and audible clicks (turrets are huge btw), reticle is awesome... Only thing is I wish it was in 1/4 moa instead of .1 mills. But having the adjustments and the reticle in the same units are a big plus to me. All in all, I'm very happy with it!

I will definitely be posting a range report when I get it sighted in.

Re: Just finished my savage FCP-K project!

Also, I kno I'm probably beatin a dead horse (why would someone want to beat a dead horse anyway), but do any of you think it's necessary to conduct any sort of barrel break in? I know I'm probably opening up a can of worms here but I wanna know anyway. I realize I already popped off a few rounds and didn't really follow the "recommended procedure" for a barrel break in. But I've had a couple people tell me, "well if you're wanting to get long range accuracy you should probably do it". I've heard both sides of the argument so I'm not wanting to start an fight here. Just curious if anyone thinks if it's too late to "properly break it in". I put about 12 rounds through it over the course of about 30 min. Took it home then ran a bore snake through it.

You can change the bolt handle out for an extended one. That will get you a little further from the scope. Good looking rifle!

Re: Just finished my savage FCP-K project!

There is a great article on break in procedures on a barrel that brings up some logical points. I fell like the general consensus is do what you want but you may do more harm than good.

Ya I could do that. Got any suggestions on a good bolt for my savage? And thanks! I think it looks pretty good myself!

If you're having trouble with the bolt/scope clearance, try using the "blade" method. After the shot is finished, put your right thumb on the stock just behind the tang, straighten out your fingers like a blade and use your thumb to leverage on the bolt. From there you can hook the bolt with your index finger and run it, using the webbing between your thumb and index finger to drive the next round home. It sounds complicated but it isn't. LoneWolfUSMC has a video on his channel describing different methods to working the bolt, the above included.

Far as barrel break in, it's a very meticulous process with severe consequences if not done correctly. Personally, I load 10 rounds, shoot em. I load another 10 rounds, shoot em. I load 10 more rounds and I shoot em. I repeat until I'm out of ammo, hit the barrel with a boresnake, put it away, go home and drink a beer.

Ya thats kinds what I've heard too. No need to clean it and put it through all that extra wear, but at the same time, if it helps accuracy. Eh whatever. I'll just sight it in and shoot!

Cool deal I'll have to check it out! Thanks!

And I really hope I dont screw it up. I don't want to buy the wrong beer and destroy the barrel! Lol! Really tho thanks for your honesty. I'll get on it!

Re: Just finished my savage FCP-K project!

I think I may be ordering the xlr evo chassis, with ambi-cheek rest, and folding adapter. I've looked at the manners stocks and while I think they're just a beautiful looking stock, it'll cost more in the end to get it to where I want it. Heard some good things about those xlr's. Anyone have one that can give some input?

Re: Just finished my savage FCP-K project!

And to top it all off, I have an AAC 762-sdn6 on the way as well
smile.gif
will be throwing that on this and my AR. But who knows how long that'll take to get it... Won't plan on getting it for at least another 6 months. Ordered it probably a month or so ago.

Re: Just finished my savage FCP-K project!

I should have done this from the beginning. I really like my Steiner Military 4-16x50 with the illuminated G2 mil dot. But I really wanted that Bushnell hdmr with the h59 reticle. I'm going to try to sell it and get the Bushnell instead. I know some of you might be like "why would you do that???" It's just preference. I really want a hours reticle and that scope is really nice for the money. You can't deny that. Since I finished this rifle I've only put 4 rounds through it. So I think I'll be selling my Steiner. Just haven't found anyone who wants to buy it yet. Soon as I do I'll be throwing that hdmr on there and running that rifle through its paces. Pm me if you're interested. Other than that I haven't gotten the suppressor for it yet. Still waiting. Yep..

That definitely sounds like your trying to sell something shy of your 100th post. Be careful the admins frown on that kind of stuff.

I read your post a few min ago and had no idea what you were talking about. So I headed over to the forums for selling stuff, which I've never gone to since I've never wanted to sell anything. I now know what you're talking about. My intent was never to break any board rules. My intent was only to state what my plans for my rifle build. Again I never meant to break any rules. I never go over to that part of the site so I never knew about that rule. What do you suggest I do? Remove my post? Thanks for the heads up.

Re: Just finished my savage FCP-K project!

At the end of the day as long as the admins don't care, what does it matter? Personally I don't really care, I just wanted to give you a heads up as it could have led to problems. Nice savage BTW.
