I went to Pala shooting range today to exercise my new Weatherby (howa 1500) chassis rifle and my Savage Model 12 VLP 243 Winchester. On the ground on a mat next to me was Walter Lange-USA Olympic F-open Class competitor. How do I know this? I asked him and he told me. You ought to see his F***ing rifle. Then there is the F***ing scope and rifle shooting rest. The whole thing is out of Star Wars. I was blown away with his equipment. All my shit is strictly blue collar over the counter mundane cheapo stuff. He was shooting 7mm 180gr bullets in a 284 Ackley case with an additional 5 degrees at the shoulder. How do I know this??? Walter showed me and articulated it. He told me his ideal velocity is 2925 to 2950 fps using 4350 powder-like I know what that is. His F***ing rifle weights just a few ounces under 22lbs. I cannot believe any of this but there it all was and on the F***ing ground to boot. Absolutely amazing.

That's ridiculous. Never seen an f-class gun, but if we're talking 20+ lbs, that's just a mortar with a bolt and trigger and better optics.

:ROFLMAO: That's awesome "mortar"! ... actually ... yeah, that actually isn't too far off from the general idea behind free recoil.

Welcome to current world of F-class, PRS and benchrest competition.

Most in F-Open use an adjustable rest up front. That way the weight of the bipod doesn't count.
I've shot a couple midrange (600yd) F-Open with a 22 Nosler AR-15. Weighs in @ 21.3 lbs.
28" bull, 5r 1:7, no gas. Not semi auto so it's sort of bolt action :)
No way I'm ever gonna win, but it's beating your previous best that is the challenge.

Scan over the F-Open scores around the country and see how many MOA shooters there are (that's all tens on the paper).
Lot more on the internet though.

If you go into this to win, you better be good and have a lot of money. If you want to challenge yourself, take your old huntin rifle pays the fee, and shoot for score. My first match got me a 'Participation Award' from the NRA :)

This pic is from the bench, not prone.

It's funny when some of the club guys show up and beat the F class guys at their own game with their PRS rifle, shooting with a bipod and rear bag. You forgot to mention all the flags too. :)

I agree. F-Class isn't really much of a challenge. You're lying there still, the targets don't move and are at a fixed and know distance.
Now, what fun is that? That's even worse than shooting dots at 100yds.
Well, maybe a little fun, I got a 97% today which beat my previous best of 94%. Sort of made me happy. Still got a ways to go.

F-Open is easier because? I can't shoot F-TR with anything but a real .223 or .308.
Got a good 6.5?, It's F-Open. A 224V or 22N? F-Open. Not everyone shoots the big guns.
But if you do have one of those big guns, then sure, cleaning a target is a piece of cake.
and I agree sling shooting is even tougher.

My friend invited me to shoot at an NRA High-Power Mid-Range match. I brought my RPR 6.5CM. The rules dictate that I be in the F-class Open category. It was a 600-yard match. First time out at that range with my RPR. Out of 8 shooters in F-class Open, I placed 6th! The two shooters I beat were classified as Expert and Master. I'm "unclassified," since I don't have enough matches under my belt.

But, yeah.... the rigs these guys were using! LOL! Once they've got them all dialed in, they could just as easily tie a string to the trigger and pull it remotely. ;) Some of their bipods probably cost more than my rifle / scope! My RPR with a Vortex Viper HST and Harris bipod and rear squeeze bag was quite "pedestrian" and crude next to their rigs. But, that made it more fun.

(Edit to add my best of the three targets that day.)

As has been mentioned... I'm really competing with myself. And, it's an opportunity to shoot at 600 yards. Such ranges are few and far between around here (2 hours drive to this one).

My buddy who dragged me to the match, shoots Service Rifle with a sling and iron sights at 600 yards (and shoots a tighter group than I did with my bipod and scope).

He asked me, "Do you know what the hardest part of being an F-class shooter is?"

No. What?

"Telling your parents you're gay." :ROFLMAO:

F open is easier cuz a 6 dasher on a true f open rifle is almost impossible to miss the 10 ring. Ftr in 556 can be a challenge in variable wind. Palma sling is just tough period

Racer88,
Same here. 35 miles to a 100yd range (which has been flooded for a month) or 110 miles to a 600/1000yd range.
Still not satisfied with my 600 but will go to 1000 this summer.
Did a 581-12X today.
Considering how great a shooter I am, just imagine how I would do shooting something other than a kitchen built 22 Nosler AR-15.
I'd be famous :)

Yeah... would be nice to have better range availability, eh? On the other hand, I'd end up spending a lot more money on ammo! Plus, I have a family that keeps me busy, too.

I went back and looked up my scores to add the three together. I scored 578-21X total for the three matches (193-8x, 193-7X, 192-6x). Not too bad for a newb with a rudimentary rig. :)

Bring a rifle and shoot. We have several people who will be shooting their first ever match tomorrow

https://practiscore.com/sdprc-series-match/register

I wish. I’m still trying to develop a load since I decided to begin reloading. So right now I don’t have any consistent ammo. I shot my first rounds for load development Thursday morning before work.

The only ammo i have right now are 3 rounds each loaded in 0.2gr increments from 41.0-45.0gr of Varget

I’m trying to get my load development done ASAP because the goal is to join you guys for a match

How was the Pala match? I wanted to come out and watch and maybe shoot one in the next few months. Im goig to try to get to the range next weekend and see how my rifle does at distance. I'm deciding between my Savage 12LRP in 6.5CM or a RRA ar15 coyote rifle. The 12LRP shoots tighter groups but the AR does 0.75" at 100 (on a good day) and is lighter. Probably depends on how they do at the range. Haven't had either out passed 300.

What gear do I need? A a special backpack? Rear bag? Front bag? Bipod? Ideally I'd get out to the desert so I can practice various positions. I suspect during rec shooting I'm limited to bench, seated and prone? Maybe I shouldn't worry about it too much. Do as much as i can durig the rec times and learn the resrest at the matches?

A previous thread said somethig about practice sessions the first sat of each month during normal rec shooting hours. Does that still happen?

You really only need ammo, bipod, and a true 1 moa gun or better. Get verified dope to at least 600 yards but 1k is always preferable. Download a ballistic app on your phone maybe strelok or something. It’s free.
The rest someone will let you borrow it. Just come on out and have a good time. Where are in SoCal you located?

That's great. I'm in San Diego and have been out to Pala before but it was a few years ago so I'll go to a rec day and take it as far as I can with my current setup--Then watch everything change when I'm not on the bench or prone and full of performance anxiety.

Remind me what the fees are. The registration page says $30 and it also says $50. I'm not sure if it ends up being $80 or if it was $30 before but the price went up to $50.

Also, Does San Diego Precision rifle club have a Facebook page or meetup page? I was looking around and wasn't actually sure if the matches were happening until I finally found the page to register for the matches on https://practiscore.com/clubs/san-diego-precision-rifle-club

Match Fees are $35 for a normal 4th Sunday match. If it’s a club series (scores counted towards end of the year awards) is $50. Not every monthly match is a series match. You can still shoot the monthly matches and pay the lower amount for the day but your scores won’t be counted towards the series end of year points.

I’m not sure what the recreation day fees are as they have changed since the tribe took control back about a year ago. There are major plans to improve the range in the near future. You can check their website http://range.palatribe.com/

As for the club we are working hard towards making it the best practical rifle club in SoCal. We’ve got some cool things in the works for 2019. It will be a fun season!

PM me your email and I will add it to our club distribution list as everything is done by email for now. We do have a Facebook page but Facebook can go fuck themselves so I’d prefer no one used it.

IDK shooting a 20shot 10" group centered up is a bit more difficult than most of the responses here. Some of the bigger matches have a good prize table as well. Just think you could all go and just clean house on the prize table just leave your brake at home because they are not allowed in the events that have a prize table
