The flying VLD....

While likely nutation will occur once again when the bullet goes transonic...I got a (claimed) physicist demanding there's never the cessation of precession. However everything I understand says precession is dampened out by at least the 200 yd mark. I think he's confused on terms and actually means repose, but he's saying precession.

What say you folk?

"Precession is a change in the orientation of the rotational axis of a rotating body. In an appropriate reference frame it can be defined as a change in the first Euler angle, whereas the third Euler angle defines the rotation itself. In other words, if the axis of rotation of a body is itself rotating about a second axis, that body is said to be precessing about the second axis."

"Nutation is a rocking, swaying, or nodding motion in the axis of rotation of a largely axially symmetric object, such as a gyroscope, planet, or bullet in flight, or as an intended behavior of a mechanism. In an appropriate reference frame it can be defined as a change in the second Euler angle."

No, I think he's technically correct, and that precession is a constant that that increases mathematically in severity as the spinning body moves forward through time. It exists the moment the bullet leaves the lands, and if it didn't and nothing else affected the bullet (it was shot into an infinite vacuum) it would not precess at all, ever. Or in other words if it was perfectly balanced and spinning perfectly there would never be any precession, but since this is reality and that is impossible all objects with rotational centripetal force precess. But, you are not incorrect about nutation when the bullet goes transonic either.

At least this is my understanding...

“In metric, one milliliter of water occupies one cubic centimeter, weighs one gram, and requires one calorie of energy to heat up by one degree centigrade—which is 1 percent of the difference between its freezing point and its boiling point. An amount of hydrogen weighing the same amount has exactly one mole of atoms in it.

Whereas in the American system, the answer to ‘How much energy does it take to boil a room-temperature gallon of water?’ is ‘Go fuck yourself,’ because you can’t directly relate any of those quantities.”

And here we have it. Why I eventually stopped coming around Snipers Hide years ago. But I was still selfless in that I left my stickied articles in place in the various sections for the few decent people.

Either that or you left because too many did not fall for your snobbery and praise your intellect. Feel free to check back in any time you want to talk about shooting or have a normal conversation.

Let's see if I have a grasp on this?
So if I run a hot load it may get sideways with me right out the tube for a while then calm down.
Earth shattering news.
And then go all herkey jerkey in transition, possibly settiling down if it has a good bc.
Once again our world is on fire.

Everytime the temperature changes or we add a little wind, it makes more difference than the herkey jerkies with good bullets.

Tag jim boatright. Or look up some of his threads. He is waaaaaay smarter than I, and is talking about exactly this topic.
