I purchased a new Knights Armament 7.62 MM MAMS kit. The finish is pretty bad and I would like to get it cleaned up and refinished for a new build I am doing. I will also be running a Knights CRS/QDC suppressor that of course attaches over the MAMS. I want to finish it in black and am wondering what type of coating/finish I should get since it is steel. Parkerized, Nitride, Cerakote, etc. What will hold up the best with the added heat when I run it with the suppressor? Thanks in advance.

KAC finishes usually look like shitwhen they are bone dry, which is how most stuff ships. I have gotten stuff that looked white.
Take the part, and dip it in motor oil, pull it out and let it dry.
Its a fucking brake. As soon as you use it, its going to get fouled up and discolored. If you actually use it it will get banged into shit so who cares unless your game is showing off to chads on Instagram.

Yes, it is a brownish rust color. I have degreased it, because it was coated with an oil, but it is like you said. You make a good point about just running it and letting it carbon up some. I may just do that. Thanks.
I have a brownish colored 5.56 mams and backup irons, I personally think they look kind of cool. If it ends up bothering you down the road you won't have any trouble selling because of the color.

Sorry, but for a similar price point (albeit it JP is a hair more) it’s just a better piece of equipment.
They value contracts over quality, and lots of civilians like them because they saw them in some war movie or something.
That is why for every 1 JP issue thread, that you have to hunt to find, you see 10 KAC issue threads, honestly they seem to be in a race with PSA for QC fuck ups recently

I have the exact same setup. Just shoot it. It'll be black as tar with that suppressor on. Then between the heat and cleaning, it'll end up 5 different colors anyways.

I like the MAMS as a brake, just slide the tube on it and it'll be whatever color u like

I’m pretty sure Knights has done more “design and detail” than any other contract company selling to big Mil. Also they don’t play the operator card to sell to civilians. They could give two shits about selling to that market. I like JP stuff too but it has its place and it’s not in a war zone.

Same. It was fetching such high dollars I was able to build a few gucci PRS and rimfire guns by selling off a some KAC stuff. When someone pays you $5.5K for a SR15 you paid $1800 for 5 years ago, you take their money and thank them. No ammount of money will pry the taupe mod 0 from my cold dead hands.
Thanks for the example. I wondered what would happen to the finish once a can was put on it which is why I asked the original question. I get a similar result on my SR-25, which has the standard flash hide, when I use the can.
I agree, I will not bother with the finish, it probably won't last long anyway.
I always take my can off of my SR-25 when I am done shooting so I will of course do the same with this build. I am anxious to finish the build, it will be about another month. Thank you for your advice.
DLC for that would be fairly cheap, maybe 35 bucks, can get it done by Club Custom Guns over in NC. Chad Buie is awesome to deal with and turn around time is a mere few weeks if that, the smaller stuff like that gets lumped in with someone's lot. A DLC finish you can scrub the shit out of and make them look new after hard use, parkerizing not so much...
I might also add, Club Custom Guns i mentioned has been around for quite some time! Can find mention and reference on the 1911 forums too. And the only reason I chimed in even on this thread is I have some raw Ti parts and saker suppressor cap there now! Thought about sending a long tine mams with my lot... but I held back like a sally!

That is exactly how mine looks. I run the can 99% of the time so I don't give a shit what color it is. When I initially bought the can for so much corn, I was concerned about the FDE going to shit ( which is gay as fck) then I bought it shot it and never paid any attention.
The mamas brake brought down the noise a bit with can on, and makes the flattest shooting AR on planet earth when running without the can. Mams is good shit.
