Re: Kansas ?

I am! My first time, and I don't think it's going to dissappoint. Several shooters on camera for the last month. I have an archery tag, but will deff be there on the early season opener with my bow in hand and orange on.

Re: Kansas ?

OKbow- I don't think orange is required unless you'll be archery hunting during rifle season, I'd check into that if I were you.
I'll be rifle hunting as usual, heck, I even drew an antelope tag this year. I've heard the drought has had an big impact on the deer. We'll see. The area I hunt was listed as the hottest city in the U.S. for about a week straight over the summer

Re: Kansas ?

Engine22 is correct. Leave the state worker color in your bag unless you are bow hunting or rifle hunting during rifle season. EVERYBODY has been getting tags. They like the moneys it brings in. West of Pratt should be true draw.
Welcome to the "hunt suck". We will be just like Nebraska before it is said and done. (3x3's and big 4x4's pinned on the board and big records getting old by the year)

If you are near or in my area, I will give you the low down on good hunts though. Not as good as what I have, but good stuff!

Re: Kansas ?

Opener is for archery and ML so orange is required.
Our hunting has gone to crap and will continue to worsen, but it still seems good to guys who are happy with 2 year old 120" deer and old pictures of big deer killed years ago. OK to dream I guess, but they are about all gone now.

I'm sorry to hear that about Kansas. That seems kind of odd, most of the things I have been reading and hearing from hunters say that there are more Boone & Crockett bucks now than there ever has been in most states. I wonder why Kansas is an exception to this or could it be that what I have heard isn't true?

Re: Kansas ?

Stephen,
For a bit of history, if you can wade through it. Just my opinion.
From '65-about '95 resident permits were on a draw. Non Residents were not allowed to hunt deer. Since then every year brings more hunters R and NR. The southern hunters mostly, were quite accustom to paying to hunt and prices in KS were cheap I guess. So the freeloading residents were displaced. The NR were amazed at the 150" and larger deer. Unfortunately, too overwhelmed at times. Many shot several on each trip. Kansas has the lowest poaching fines in the United States and worst enforcement. Locals were upset due to thier free hunting being gone, so they poached, trespassed with a vengence. Most of the leased land is trespassed and poached prior to any NR arriving. The locals want to kill the deer so the NR cannot get them. The NR thinks they are killing big deer when they are 120". Everyone is trying to kill them before someone else gets them. The KDWP could care less as long as those expensive NR permits keep selling.
The local prosicutors will not prosicute wildlife violations. They will prosicute violations if a land owner is not nice to the poacher.
Headless deer litter the fields from Sept 1 to late Jan. So common that the locals do not even look twice at them. My NR friends are amazed. Anywhere else, a poached animal makes news, causes investigations. Not here.
Local small time meth cookers and dope growers poach the deer in thier spare time. Parents take thier kids out spotlighting at night, bullets fly.
Game wardens in the field are told to not even speak to a NR poacher as they are here spending money. If they do, they get a call from the head office warning them about their job security. No kidding. You can spotlight a deer, trespass, cut the head off and pay a smaller fine than the permit cost. I think if you shoot several, the fine goes down on a per deer basis. The KDWP keeps the heads you get caught with to promote NR liscense sales. Win, Win. If a landowner is rude to you, you can have them arrested. ( dont ask how I know)
The deer and the landowners have paid the price and will continue to do so.
I can document every word I have written.
Kansas is the most poacher friendly state in the union.

Re: Kansas ?

Unfortunetly, what rth1800 said is true. The local game warden here has 5 counties to cover. If that wasnt enough, the state has been regulating the number of miles they can drive.
We are indeed a poacher friendly state.

Re: Kansas ?

I'm originally from IN, but moved to SW KS when I was in the first grade. I had to take a hunter's safety course before I could purchase a license to hunt. I think the laws then stated, that you had to be born before 1958 to be exempt from the hunter's safety course.

I've been going back since I got out of the military to hunt every year. I still see and shoot some nice large deer. I also know the farmers hate the deer, antelope, Snow geese and rabbits.

I too, have seen many dead deer just laying in fields due to land owners shooting them and leaving them lay. The farmers say, "They're eating more grain than their worth", therefore; mass killing without any care.

It pisses me off because, that's meat gone to waste. If you're going to shoot them, EAT THEM!

I don't go to shoot the trophy deer, I want the meat. You can't eat the antlers. I know some people from out east, that pay $6000.00 to shoot deer and phesant in KS. I'll never figure that one out.

Re: Kansas ?

I live in MO and hunt west of Fort Scott on my Uncles Farm. I contacted him about 4 years ago after losing access to to my place up here in MO. It's about 700 acres in total. I hunted it the first year and saw the biggest bucks I have ever seen since starting bowhunting 15 years ago. However I did run into tresspassers and poachers. I was there legally. I paid my 400 plus dollars for the out of state tags and hunting license plus more for a couple of antlerless tags. I called the game wardens several times and each time they never returned my phone calls.
last year which would be year 3 of hunting the place I was sitting on my tailgate eating a sanwich after the morning hunt and a warden driving down the road saw me and stopped in to check me. Everything checked out and I started talking to him and brought up that they never returned my calls. He apologized and explained he was responsible for like 3 or 4 counties. I understood his predictement.
I caught some guff from a couple of guys that where residents apparently pissed off that I was there in "thier state." Whatever, I'm there legally I follow the rules and have paid my dues nad have permission from a family member. I can understand why Res are pissed but dont be pissed at the guys that are there becasue they have the oppurtunity and do it by the law.

Re: Kansas ?

FWIW, thought I would touch on this as I just left the KW&P office picking up some tags.

I asked about wearing orange during muzzloader/archery season (as an archery hunter) and he and the big man both informed me that orange is only required during firearms season only.

Obviously the KW&P doesn't consider a ML a firearm.

From KW&P website:

Blaze Orange Required

Deer Hunting

All firearms deer hunters and persons assisting them must wear blaze orange. In addition, all deer hunters (archery and firearms) must wear hunter orange during any open firearm season. A minimum of 100 square inches on the front and 100 square inches on the back must be visible. A blaze orange hat must also be worn.

Re: Kansas ?

I suggest you read what the law says. Your officers are wrong. A ML is a firearm and if not considered so, the law would not read
"any open firearm season". I know of two citations for BH during the ML season with no orange.

Re: Kansas ?

Ran across this after receiving a call that stated an archery hunter does not need to wear blaze orange during muzzle loader season. LMAO. The big man I am referring to is from an office a little East of here.

18. Archery season runs concurrently with muzzleloader and firearm seasons. Must archers wear blaze orange?

2011 Deer FAQs

Yes, archery hunters who hunt during periods that coincide with early muzzleloader and firearm seasons must wear blaze orange. The law requires that all deer hunters afield during open firearm seasons must wear a blaze orange hat and at least 200 square inches of blaze orange. Archers are not required to wear blaze orange when muzzleloader or firearm seasons are closed.

Re: Kansas ?

Kansas is a yearly event for a bunch of us that served together in the Marine Corps. Besides the great hunting, it's a good time to catch up with old friends. I've been to Korea for a couple Team Spirit's in the early 80's and never got as cold as I did while deer hunting in Kansas. It snowed so hard one evening, it covered up a couple doe's that were shot within minutes. We had to look for high spots in the snow to find them, in a blizzard...damn good times.
