Are you gonna ban AR-15s and confiscate them all? Good luck with that. I think you would be hard pressed to find enough LEOs willing to do that....certain locales in far left areas, sure, but as a whole, I don't think that will happen. I could see governors and even Sheriffs and Police Chiefs saying they wouldn't enforce a confiscation.

Are you going to ban the future manufacture and sell of AR-15s? What would you accomplish by doing that? There has to be what....6 million ARs in circulation (perhaps more). That is like trying to ban the Chevy 350 V8 or Redwing boots. They are everywhere and aren't exactly "rare".

Are you going to find ways to make it more difficult for people to legally purchase AR-15s? All you will do is create a black market for AR-15s where they are sold face-to-face.

I guess I don't really see the thought process. This is coming from a guy who once owned a .308 DPMS SASS for about a year, but has never owned an "AR-15". I own one stripped lower and have never taken the time to build it up. I don't have a problem at all with AR-15s, just always had some other type of firearm/shooting discipline I was more interested in. I'm only mentioning this to show I don't have a major axe to grind with this issue....just the flawed logic of politicians, the media and some of the public. I don't see where politicians think that anything they do will solve "the problem". You are literally talking about stripping the rights of 330,000,000 people for the actions of less than half a dozen people per year.

I think most people will agree that we want to keep firearms out of the hands of mentally ill people. The question is: how can this goal be accomplished without trampling on the rights of 300,000,000+ people.

Its absurd to think making more things illegal would do anything. Its already illegal to kill people, so all the laws do that ban possession in certain areas do is add tack-on charges for people who plan to get killed when they do this sort of thing anyway. The thing is, laws don't actually do anything, its on your honor until you break them, and at that point it is reactive punishment to keep people in line. But at that point the bodies are already cold.

Laws attempting to preempt this kind of thing are antithetical to America and counter to a free society; living in a free society carries inherent risk. As emotionally convenient as I am sure it is for some people to believe it is possible to ever be truly safe it just isn't the case. There is no physical reason the guy behind you at Taco Bell can't all of a sudden get up and beat you to death with his chair-its just very unlikely that he is a psychopath who'd do that. Still, it is within the realm of possibility.

With the understanding that there is no way to actually stop the first victim or two from being killed when a random act of senseless violence is perpetrated, the most favorable course of action is to take steps to mitigate it. I have seen estimates of astronomical figures to put armed guards in schools, these are strawman arguments. You don't need to hire armed guards to man schools, all that needs to be done is to remove restrictions on teachers carrying per the permits they already have-maybe an incentive program if not many do have them. Removing restrictions is the answer, not adding them.

Then it would go down like the SAFE act in NY where all the people who own them just don't comply, many localities don't enforce it, and nobody knarks on their buddies.

That is a good point about mitigating the damage. The truth lies in the fac that no matter what you do, an evil person with evil intent WILL find a way to harm others. I guess the object is to make the planning for them so difficult that it is more likely for law enforcement to catch wind of a plan.

I still think the armed guard thing is a bit of a stretch, if not unnecessary. Sure, there are certain school districts that need such security measures in place, but as a whole, I think that is overkill. A security "presence" may be a viable alternative for most school districts....what I mean is a plan with a revolving officer/patrol schedule that is random and impossible to pattern. If an armed security guard is a deterrent, then perhaps making it difficult to plan something at a school is a fair option.

When the first bell sounds, the locks engage and every person trying to enter the school after that (whether it be a tardy student, the FedEx man, a parent, or a madman) must be buzzed in and had "eyes laid on them" by a faculty member before being given entry into the school. I'd bet the cost of these vestibules could be GREATLY reduced by wealthy benefactors and local construction companies who donate money, time and labor towards the construction.

I think a person who is planning mass murder/suicide isn't going to be discouraged by such things. If he considers guns too difficult to use (not impossible because machine shop equipment is still around) he could build a gasoline bomb or any other of a number of ways of going about it. In fact, that would probably result in even more dead. That goes to reinforce the point that it is the man, not the instrument, at fault.

When I lived in Ohio, I asked John Kasich face-to-face if he was going to vote for a piece of anti-gun legislation. I can't remember which one... but it was not the Assault Weapon Ban. That was in effect at the time. But it was something else... and similar.

Right to my face, he said "I will not vote for this. I promise you, I will vote no."

He voted "yes."

He lied to my face.

Back when Busenhalter-6 was a twenty-something and living in DC... he also went all 'gropey hands-on' with her at some soiree. Long before I knew her.
