Given how long it takes to get barrels from the barrel makers, what do you guys recommend pre-ordering? I will be making mostly hunting rifles. I am beginning to understand why custom guns take so long, given the wait on the barrels and especially the stocks. McMillan is up to 5-6 months.

Have you checked with Bruno's. They keep a lot of barrels in stock.
I got a 6mm 8T Rem Varmint contour Krieger from them a couple of weeks ago for the same price that that I could have ordered it from Krieger. Just an option if you have to have a quick fix for your custom addiction.

Re: Keeping barrels in stock?

I have the same question but on a grander scale. A buddy and I have been discussing buying 500 barrels for stock and for resale. What are the most popular taper twist combos for hunting and tactical rifles.
There isnt a lot of need to try and stock benchrest barrels as there are plenty of resellers handling that, but hunting barrels are sometimes scarce.
He has been putting out some feelers to some reputable barrel makers but until we come up with a list of what we need we are stalled.
I like to build at least on no.4 taper barrels but that is just my preferance. I was thinking about going kinda heavy on number 6s in various calibers with twist rates on the faster side with a smaller percentage of no.4s and 5s. I really like the number 6s because I like to put them in HS sendero take off stocks. I really like that blueprint for hunting guns but am sure others like to go lighter.
Any suggestions?
