My wife and I are trying to identify a good concealed carry pistol for her. I purchased her a Walther PPK last year and she shoots it very well, but has a great deal of trouble pulling the slide back all the way. She wants something else that is small, easy to load, and is controlable. She likes the .380 so we were looking at the Kel Tec and the Ruger LCP. I have shot a Kel Tec and did not like it, but I have no experience with the Ruger. Can anyone give me their opinons on them, or something else that might suffice.

Take a look at the S&W 340... I have it in the SC model. It weights in at 14.2 ounces fully loaded with .357 magnum rounds in it. Very light, very accurate, and packs a hell of a punch. I insist on you letting her shoot it with .38 specials in it instead of the .357 though. It will still function flawlessly but wont have near the recoil. Admittedly, it is not fun to shoot with the .357 rounds, but I can shoot it all day with the .38 specials. I seriously advise you rent one if you have a local gun shop that will let you do that and shoot at least a box of 50 through it. I think you'll be surprised.

My brother has the Ruger LCP as well. It's hard for both our girlfriends to pull that slide back. It isn't a fun gun too shoot, but it is small.

If you want to go the semi auto route, take a look at a P238, and the P380. Only issue with both these pistols is that they cost two times more than the LCP.

Here is a little helpful hint ......

Instead of her trying to pull the slide back, have her PUSH the frame forward.

The design of the PPK is what is making it hard for her to rack the slide. Its a fixed barrel blow back design, so the only way to absorb the recoil in the slide is with the main spring.

But have her try this next time she is shooting. Have her grab the slide with her offhand, and lock it into position, and dont let her arm of her offhand move. Once she has locked her offhand in position ...... have her use her shooting hand and PUSH the frame forward while keeping her offhand in the same spot. if she follows that routine she will probably find it easier to rack the slide that way.

I have had my wife on the range with the PPK/S, the LCP, the glock 26/9mm the glock 19/9mm and she is not weak and is in great shape, but had trouble with the ppk the lcp and the 26 they had too much muzzle jump, she was great with the glock 19
The LCP is my pocket gun I can carry it all day long in shorts and flip flops and nobody knows. I do have a permit...

I have fingered both guns a lot, and actually I think the Kel Tec has a better trigger pull on it. And cost a few bucks less. Identical pistols otherwise. YMMV, my .02, etc.

+1000 on pushing the frame forward

My mom likes the LCP for the size and eas of carry. But after she fired it she don't like the recoil and how it rotated in her hand. She went back to the S&W model 60 with .38 spl loads.

This is a pretty good idea. There's an even lighter version that weighs in at 12oz. One of them regularly rides around on my ankle. My very fit and strong wife has trouble racking the slide on most anything, and a revolver gives her 100% confidence that she can manipulate her weapon.

Not only should you not let her shoot magnum loads, you shouldn't either. That little bastard is a brute with magnum rounds. We carry ours with +P's.

If your set on a .380, see if you can find a Beretta Model 86 to put in her hand. They're a midsize .380 with a tip-up barrel. Eliminates any hand-strength issues when loading or unloading.

Also, almost any locking breech pistol with an external hammer will be easier to operate...just pull back the hammer before racking the slide and you're not trying to cock the action with the slide.

I really can't comment on the Kel-Tec but I've got the Ruger LCP and I like it a a lot. It's really a small gun and I always have the finger extension on the magazine. I can conceal it easily and it can go pretty much anywhere unnoticed. Plus it is more accurate than I thought it would be when I got it.

I carry(in warmer weather) a Walther PPS in 9mm. Muzzle flip is neglegible. Fairly accurate as well for a 2" barrel.
They also have a night sight option now as well, (supposedly)

Of course, if I have the clothing options (ie cooler weather) I prefer my 1911, but Texas is hot 9 months out of the year, so you make do with what you can. 9mm will kill you just as dead as 45 if you hit your target, so...

I bought my wife an LCP yesterday. We ran a few mags through it to try it out. It is not the most fun pistol to shoot, the light weight and ultra short grip create some big recoil. My wife likes it but would not want to shoot more than a couple mags at a time. She feels the light weight and small size outweigh the uncomfortable recoil. She knows she will have to practice with it if she is going to carry it, but there won't be any long range sessions with this one. Accuracy seems fine at 5 yards, we were just shooting an old coffee can so no real test yet. I checked out the Kel Tec and the LCP side by side in the gun shop before deciding on the LCP. Fit and finish seemed better on the LCP, everything was a little more smooth.

I'm partial to the Kel-Tecs myself as I have a few in .380, 9mm and .32. I like the Ruger but don't own one nor feel I need to...now

For people with grasping strength issues, or more precisely, diffculty manipulating a small pistol's slide, I think the light weight revolvers are the best option.

Since there will be no inertia dampening of a slide on the light revolver, even +P .38 might be a handfull, hence the notion of regular .38 spl loads made for short barrels might be the best course.

Mrs. Q carries a CT gripped 637 at all times, with a couple speed loaders, is competent loading, unloading and firing it and feels amply armed. The ability to thumb back the hammer for single action also provides for a little depth in the option department. I also have a CT gripped 642 for ankle carry.

Don't overlook the lightweight revolvers from Taurus, Charter or the new Ruger and S&W polymer revolvers either.

Love my LCP. 200 rounds without a single failure (hollow points). With the finger grip on the end of the mag it is very easy to handle and recoil is almost negligable.

I have the Ruger as a backup and my wife has the Kel-Tec...both with Crimson Trace. I like them both. The Ruger has been more finicky with some hollow points (mainly Hydra Shocks)but any of these small autos can be so make sure you run enough of what you are going to shoot to know. Both run real good with Winchester Silver Tips. After shooting both a fair amount either is good....just handle them and see what you like. The laser makes them very easy to shoot minute of man to 25 yards.

I've got the Ruger and I'm pretty pleased with it. One of my friends has the new Taurus and his brother-in-law has the Kel-Tec. My take is there is really not much difference in any of them. I will say that I thought the Taurus has the smoothest trigger of the three.

My trigger finger doesn't fit the Kel-Tec trigger loop as well as the Ruger's, though they both fit in my hand made pocket holsters nearly identically.

Then again, my hands are more on the order of bear paws than mere mortal hands: probably from being raised by bears as a boy, or it's my proud Neanderthal heritage.
