curious to know what any of you think about the Kenetrek boot in general ... and specifically, if you have review thoughts on either the boot mentioned above or the "Ultra" version of the same...

Gohunt, and Euro Optics had them discounted a bit I don't know if they still do. Go to Sportsman's Warehouse and try them on for fit and then order from an online retailer and save $120-180.

They fit fine, they work fine, they are heavy but I don't think they are so heav.

I like the boots with the rand on them (mountain extreme) better than the Mountain Guide.

I know a lot of people who get them through work, like USFS, Linemen, etc. They all say the soles wear out fast, and aren't that good of a tread pattern to begin with.

Some of the Linemen I know get them, and immediately send them off to get re-soled with Vibram soles.

Other than the soles, they say they are very comfortable and rugged boots.

I've had a pair of the Safari boots for 18 months and they are my favorite pair of footwear! At least 100 miles hiked in them in temps from 20F to 90F. Even though they don't have a waterproof membrane or insulation my feet have always stayed dry and warm. I do refresh the bees wax water repellant often.

I got a pair of the Wildland fire boots in July and they have a similar outer sole as the Mountain series (K-73). It is a little softer than the sole on my Safari's (Django) which has shown minimal wear.

One thing to keep in mind is with the Guide and Mountain series they have 7mm thick insoles which will need about ~30 miles to break in. If you have any questions just call Kenetrek, they know their product line very well.

I like my Kenetrek, the mountain extreme. They are fantastic boots. I have worn them in AZ, AK and CO. Check the features and then check the fit.

I like my Kenetreks, although they are a little narrow for my wide foot. (Didn;t have the wide sizes when I initially got them.)

Minimal break in, very comfortable, I would say you , with a proper fit, could lace up a brand new pair and go for a 10 mile hike and not get blisters. I have a 400 gram pair going on 6-8 years now probably and still going strong. I wear them in the fall and winter. I will probably get another pair when these wear out.

Kenetrek mountain extreme here, going on 12 months this pair, have about 25 days hunting in the mountains here in Ak, have another 60-80 all day wear on them. They have held up well, I will replace with same. I don't walk on asphalt or cement much, pair probably has less than 5 miles, rest is dirt or rock surface.

I am surprised that you are only getting two full seasons out of these boots... how many days a year are you wearing them?
Maybe 100-120 a year. But maybe only 20-30 rough hunting days. They are bomb proof boots. I was ruining a pair of Danners each season before I found kennetreks.
I have been getting a pair in odd numbered years in May. They are broke in perfect by the fall. I use the retired two year old boots as wood cutting/working around the house etc to put less use on newer ones. Then after the second season of use on newer ones the leather is typically pretty cut/gouged up and not waterproof anymore. Half the tread is still left though.
then they are my around the house/work boots and the 4yr old pair get passed on to someone else.

Check the outlet on the KUIU website for the Scarpa boots they are blowing out at a great price. These are actual mountaineering boots in more hunter friendly colors. I previously taught and guided climbers in alpine environments and the gear we had was, with few exceptions, always head and shoulders above anything sold in outdoor stores for hunting / fishing. Scarpa or La Sportiva were my go to for cold / snow / winter ascents. Companies like Kuiu have closed that equipment gap a great deal though there is still an overwhelming amount of crap on the hunting / fishing side of the "outdoor" industry.

Truth. I practiced some ski mountaineering in the Cascades back in the 90s and the gap was huge then.

Scarpa T2 telemark boots were state of the art then.

Good advice
I've destroyed every major boot brand out there in 1-2 years max except Scarpa and Lasportiva.
My current mountaineer style boots are the Scarpa Grand dru, for a less aggressive and flexible boot check out their kinesis Pro hikers
