Kestrel Elite accuracy vs Apps

Alright, been using the Shooter app on my phone and picked up a Kestrel 2500 for atmospherics. I input the data as accurately as i can and use a magnetospeed to pull muzzle velocity. Ive noticed no matter how much i true the data the curves never match real world drops. It will come to within 1mil to .5mil at 1000 but thats the best ive gotten. Average is 1-1.5mils difference.

been debating dropping the app and my 2500 for a 5700 elite since it takes in more atmospherics and has the AB solver pulling the data from the same machine.

my question is will i see better results out of the 5700 vs what im doing now? Or am i asking too much from a ballistics solver?

That is a large difference. When all variables are entered correctly, most apps/kestrels will get you within a tenth or two.

I would go back and double check that all settings and inputs are correct. .5 to 1 mil at 1k seems like large offset.

Why not just use the AB app since you already have a Kestrel 2500? Use the 2500 to pull DA and then use the app with the curves and profiles built in.

True your data with whatever app and see if the dope matches up. Pretty much every time I've ever entered a velocity from a magentospeed into a ballistic calculator I've been on steel at 1000 yards. No issues.
Make sure its good data in and good data out. If its .5 mil I would suggest checking your sight height (how far the center of the scope is above the center of the bore). Make sure you don't have the g7 bc in the g1 curve or other stuff like that. I rarely use Shooter. Almost always used BallsticAE or BallisticARC. Now that I have a Kestrel 4500 I never use my phone anymore.

I bought the Geoballistics App (BallisticARC) for my phone and the Weatherflow bluetooth weather meter - $130 and works like a champ. I had been running a Horus Kestrel for 5 years, but started to worry about how much life it had left.

I have the BallisticsARC app on my phone and got 1st round hits on steel out to 800 yards. At 900 and 1000 only my windage was off and it was just barely off 2nd round hit at 900 and 4th at 1000 on a 12" plate. To me that is great results for something as cheap as it was. But I did spend a good 10 or so minutes entering data before shooting.

The real draw to the Elite Kestrels is the curve library from Applied Ballistics. G1/G7 are models of a bullet in flight. The numbers represent a score as to how the bullet performs compared to the model.

With an AB Kestrel you get access to the custom curve library. These are comprised of data from those bullets in flight. You aren't comparing them to a model, those bullets have a curve dedicated to that specific bullet.

In my opinion it's the most accurate way of doing it at typical shooting distances (out to 1400 or so). You can get good results with G1/G7 and guys have for years but there's often some troubleshooting and truing required to get everything lined up.

Well i did some playing on my Shooter app with the same recorded drops at my last match a week ago. To make the app match my curve I had to drop the bc down from .270 G7 to .255 (Nosler RDF 175). Which i find odd since all the RDFs have been getting same or higher real world bc than advertised and the new Applied Ballistics update puts the 175RDF at .271.

Velocity is good at 2740fps...magnetospeed measured with only a 3.4SD. Baro (set at absolute) and temp are from Kestrel 2500 and checked throughout the day and updated in the app as needed. Scope height measure from center of bore to center of turret with calipers. Not sure how my data entry could be so far off if that was the case.

Ive tried ICAO and ASM atmosphere standards with no change in the apps dope. Tried humidity from 0 to 100 with no change either.

Ive had to true a BC once before but it was fine tuning and not nearly as off as this one. Had my buddy throw all my data in his trasol app and he got the same data I had. Maybe I just have shitty luck with bullet lots?

my problem is until a match I only have 300yrds to true my dope with. If the 5700 elite will solve this BS im getting with my app it will pay for itself between frustration, travel and match fees not being wasted.

1) have you checked the kestrel to make sure altitude is set to Zero, so that you get an accurate station/absolute pressure? If you can get station pressure/absolute pressure you don't need DA. This would affect your ballistics.

2) If your concern is the app, Trasol is $10 last time I checked. Never heard 1 bad thing about it's accuracy on this site.

3) If you have the money to drop on a kestrel elite and want to get down to a single device then go for it, but if "accuracy" is what you are looking for you can easily get that for much much less with the equipment you already have.

4) Have you done a ladder test to confirm your scope is tracking correctly. You may need to adjust for this in the app if your tracking isn't 100% true.

Wasnt sure if the AB in the kestrel ran curves differently. Im not opposes to another app if something is messed up though. I just want good data...if its a phone and cheap kestrel im ok with it for now...if it takes $700 for an elite im ok with that too.

ive checked tracking on one of my scopes but not this particular one. That was next on my list of things to check. Both are razor Gen2s and the first was spot on and id be suprised id it was this far off. Not impossible though.

Been using my 5700 AB a lot with two guns, both with suppressor (offsets) and without. To me there is just no substitute. It is a field grade all in one product that can lay in the sun and rain all day long. They have videos of kestrels being dropped off buildings and frozen in ice blocks. The screen is easy to read even in bright sun and all my dope has been spot on. I do find with environmentals, taking a reading periodically and locking the "update" works best to avoid heat sink. I am so glad I made the plunge with the 5700AB. BTW I recommend the tan model to reduce heat sink.....

Both FFS and the Kestrel 5700 give me 9.4 mil for that data. As expected, changing programs is not the issue, you have some other problem, either with the data or with the scope.

Unfortunately that's what I was afraid of. That is now 4 ballistic apps/devices confirming my Shooter data. Guess I'll be running a full on tracking test this weekend, double checking velocity and seeing if I can verify my kestrel's readings.

Just to throw a wrench in the works, 3 years ago I bought the Kestrel 2500 and the 3500 and neither one was accurate So I contacted the Importers and I ended up getting the 4000, It is bang on, I took the other 2 to a local Air Port and they were out by a fair margin, I also have a Suunto Vector watch and it was reading totally different numbers compared to the 2500 and the 3500, But when I compared the Vector to the 4000 they mirror each other within seconds of either one changing,

If your Kestrel is reading right you should not have to alter your BC curve because that is dictated by the weight/density/Length/Speed Etc, At a Guess I would say that your Kestrel needs recalibrating Due to the fact the 25 and the 35 that I got were out I would say that is where the problem lies.

Just as a side note so we can compare your DATA we might need your sighting in Data as well, But to me your BC's seem to be way off be way off and the standard twist Rate for a 308 is normally 12:1 or 11.25:1 yet you listed a 10:1 Twist rate, A 10 to 1 is normally a 270 win twist rate, Are you sure you don't have your Calibres and Twist rates mixed up ?

Speed 2740fps 1:12 twist rate I get 9.23 Mrad.

I think if you dialled in 10.25 mils you would be a bit closer because you should not mess with the BC numbers.

Yeah I am getting 9.23 mils pointing North, 9.15 mils pointing East, 9.3 mils pointing West. With ZERO Wind

With a 10 MPH wind at 9 O'clock I get 9.36 mils pointing North, and 9.29 mils pointing East, and 9.43 mils pointing West.

With a 10 MPH wind from 3 O'clock I get 9.09 mils pointing North, and 9.02 mils pointing East, and 9.17 mils pointing West.

So North and West are close to what you got depending on whether you add the wind or not..

That's a shame because Strelok uses both, personally I like being able to add the pressure and other bits needed but being able to just add one input when needed is a great bonus, I think if anyone wants to shoot past 1000 yards then the Kestrel Elite is the way to go because it has the Drop Charts and stores up to about 16 Guns,, but up to 1000 yards the Sportsman is more than up to the Job but it does not have the Drop Charts and it Stores 3 Guns.

Just a Quick reminder in case people don't know, That if you have bought a Sportsman and regret and wished you had bought the Elite, "YOU" can send in your Sportsman and get it upgraded to the same Specs as the Elite, So don't worry or feel bad about it, because there is a light at the end of the Tunnel, Ok.

PS.. I got the company over here to import me the Coyote Coloured Molle Pouch made by "MYSTERY RANCH" In the USA for mine and it Holds the ConX and the Kestrel and it mounts to any Molle Belt or Pack, "Sorry" NO Shoulder Strap Version but it is Battle field ready and very well Padded. But they are not on Kestrels site at the moment so maybe they are on back order but with an RRP of about $75.00 the build quality is well worth it, I paid a lot more because of 20% import duty " SOB's" LOL.. but hey it's only money and ya can't take it with ya. lol.

The Kestrels are very accurate but you have to get that info right, when I first got one 3 or 4 years ago it was totally Alien to me, I had never seen one and had been doing it all Old School, I bought the shooter App and a few others but I prefer Strelok out of them all, I was going to buy AB but I don't like the up side down drop sheet, And Strelok has so many manual options, I can type in the range and click ok and I get all the important data in a flash. I was fooling with it the other day to see how far it would supply Data and it goes a heck of a long way. But the downside is that I can't afford a Vector 21 or 23 to be able to use it, LOL.

You can also do the upgrade yourself. You just have to order the Bluetooth dongle and you can update from any computer. It's not cheap though, retail is 190. Doc explained once why they don't use straight DA. I can't remember if it was at the seminar or another thread. I'll try and find it.

The biggest culprit here comes from 1 of 4 different places.

1. BC: Sometimes users will select to use a G7 BC, or switch BCs but the number doesn’t actually change. Make sure you verify not only that you have selected the correct drag standard (G1 or G7), but that it is an appropriate number. If you are running a 6.5 Creedmoor, and have a BC of around .600 yet you have selected G7 form factor, this is incorrect.
2. MV: Sometimes users do not have the correct muzzle velocity input (this can be due to change in weather), but it can also be due to using MV Variation (Or Temp Table) incorrectly. We have detailed information on how to use this feature in the AB Mobile Guide on the User Guides Page. Your input for fps/degree should be between zero and two; any higher and you’re going to be off.
3. Turret Tracking: This tends to throw people off for a number of reasons. First off, some users don’t know to even check this. Remember it’s a mechanic adjustment that is subject not only to wear, but defects. Secondly some users don’t know how to input it correctly. If you have the Kestrel, you simply correct your MV for this. You can find out more in the Ballistics Calibration Article in the Articles. If you are using the AB Mobile app, you are entering a correction FACTOR. Meaning that number is going to multiplied by something. So if you change that 1 to a 0, you are in for a world of hurt. The AB Mobile guide on the resource page tells you how to properly use this number, on top of the turret tracking test document you can download which has the formulas and setup for this test.
4. Segmented BCs: You should always double check and make sure that the segmented BCs are in order. If they do not follow in order for velocity, it can cause firing solution errors.

Welll... it isn't 1, because I'm using the custom curve. it isn't 2, because I'm not using AB mobile, I'm using Kestrel LiNK, and there's only one MV input. I have temp offset set to off. It isn't 3, because I've checked that repeatedly (and if it were 3, my Shooter dope would be off, and it's not.) and since I'm using the custom curve, I'm not using segmented BCs. Soooo..

Also, it's still stuck displaying everything in imperial but the range, which is meters.

I still use a 4500NV. I'm a simple guy. I don't need an all in one thing. I just want my LRF to work my calculator to work and to hit what I'm aiming at. However, I did just order the CONx with the sportsman and will be doing the elite upgrade but I'll probably still use my phone/iPad as the calculator and the kestrel as a backup. I find navigating the kestrel screens to be rather annoying but it's an excellent backup.

However, I did just order the CONx with the sportsman and will be doing the elite upgrade but I'll probably still use my phone/iPad as the calculator and the kestrel as a backup. I find navigating the kestrel screens to be rather annoying but it's an excellent backup.

I do the exact same thing, I really like the ConX because there are 5 or 6 ways ( Methods ) that you can use it and it Gives LOS and Degrees in most settings which is great because I can still use it the same way you use yours, but it still does what we need, Sure a Terrapin would be nice but it does not have the options that the ConX has, I took mine to a Town built on a Valley and zapping things across the Gorge was an eye opener, I hit the corner of a shed that was about 8x8 or 10x10 at 1677 yards 9 times out of 10 and that was hand held, The rest of it was hidden by trees and bushes, and don't worry about the Beam, people keep quoting different figures but I read a report where someone tested it and it was pretty small so your good to go, and on another review someone Lasered distances and then measured them manually and in every case it was within 8 inches over very long distances So this one is a keeper,

Well I have read one report where they gave it to a greenhorn and he was Ringing Steel at 850 to a 1000 yards having never fired a shot before and in the link below they say it's like carrying an instructor in you back pocket, Add to that what I have seen and done I think this is the best all round LRF on the market because there is something for everyone regardless of their skill level,

I have fired a shot or two over the years and I am glad with the options that the ConX gives me because it covers all bases, Yes no doubt there are bigger and better LRF's out there but you have to spend well over 3 or 4 K and even then you won't have the freedom the ConX gives you. So those maga Buck LRF's need to raise the bar and make them App friendly Because Dinosaurs like me can use the ConX the way I want without being Dictated too and Techno Nerds can exploit it to it's limits, what more could I ask for,.

Many folks just don't realize just how far a Mile truly is with the Naked Eye, Seeing natural targets are a devil of a thing to see even at 5 or 600 yards but the optics in the ConX are pretty good and as I said I leave the Bino's at home now, My Leupold Mk 4s weigh just over 25oz and my Leupold BX-2 10x42s Tactical Bino's weigh 22oz and the ConX weighs 13.6 oz including the Battery so it is over half a pound lighter and the optics are equal or better then the BX-2's, So there are good things to come from Bushnell in the future.

But they are not on Kestrels site at the moment so maybe they are on back order but with an RRP of about $75.00 the build quality is well worth it, I paid a lot more because of 20% import duty " SOB's" LOL.. but hey it's only money and ya can't take it with ya. lol.

correction, AB Mobile DOES allow DA as an input or temp pressure and RH. It's AB analytics (the desktop version) that uses station pressure, temp and humidity.

Well I was beginning to wonder because Brian made AB very complex the man is a Wizard,

I still can't down load the ConX App even though I have the right Android running gear it appears that the App does not like Samsung and it won't down load on to my Nexus 7 either so I need to buy a new tablet and a new phone which is annoying because I have a great battery for my phone and it will tether and run the internet for up to 12 hours a day or go on standby for about 3 weeks, lol

I have an iPhone 6 with the life proof free case. I can go 3 days with heavy use without charging.

Nice,, I did try to find something like that for my Galaxy Note 1 but because of the big battery I cant find anything to fit it, the standard battery is 2500mah and the one on it is a 5200 so it is a beast of a thing,

But I have asked my brother to sort out an iphone for me because I need to upgrade,

The best part of that case is it replaces the garbage lightning adapter on the iPhone with an USB type c.

Are you giving your Kestrel time to stabilize at your location? It also a good idea to do a reset before you plug in your new shooting data. It easy to enter some incorrect data on a screen and over look an input with new data. Keeping a data book to reference for like shooting conditions.

Another thing a pilot friend taught me was to call local airport weather number, then you can use AD from the recording to compare to your hand held. Humidity can be set at 50%, if you read lowlights post.

That is cheap insurance when you compare the price of a new phone, I use to keep the tablet in a Peli Case along with my Optics but as my kit grew I had to buy a new bag, and settled on the Hazard 4 spotters bag.

Well my brother bought me down a Galaxy Note 3 and it is fast, He Loaded the ConX App on to it before he bought it down to me, It hooks up with the ConX the moment you hit the range button, and once you load the bullet data in to the phone and it pairs to the ConX you don't need to use the phone any more, When you load your own bullet curve in to the App the phone it displays the info and the degrees are displayed down to the 0.1* and I checked out the come ups and they are within 0.01 to 0.03 Mils so what ever it does this is one clever set up and the info is there in a blink of an eye,

The phone has 4 x 1.6g Quad Core DooDads so it is no slouch, But the ease of connectability is a push over,

AB doesn't use DA. It wants actual pressure, temp, humidity.

Incorrect, you can tell the App to use DA in the settings if you so desire. The Kestrel doesn't use DA it pulls the environmentals off the sensors.
