Kestrel use during a match - Enter specific ranges or go with a general range card?

I just picked up a 5700 w/LINK and am getting it all figured out. I've always used Strelok before now. I'm also just coming into PRS/DMM type matches from the 3Gun world.

Do y'all tend to enter specific ranges into your Kestrel for match stages?

I *think* I like being able to create a range card for a specific stage. i.e., Target A is 575, Target B is 383, etc. BUT, I suspect that could be a major pain in the ass in the middle of a competition, especially if there is a blind stage (no chance to preview or range find before going on the clock). Fiddling with the device between or during stages sounds like trouble.

Or do you work up a detailed drop sheet ahead of time for close-enough distances, i.e. 100, 150, 200,...., 1,000 with your dope? This is what I've done for 3-Gun, just use a generic card with a wrist coach, taped to the stock, etc. Then, leave the fiddling with the Kestrel for practice sessions, or non-match conditions?

For match stages, it seems that if the target is 18x36 or 12x12, then is won't make too much difference if my range card for a specific stage says 537yds vs. my generic drop sheet saying 550 yds, eh?

I will look up the ranges in the match book and just enter a each range one at a time, then note that in the match book. Then transfer the data to my dope card for that stage. I rarely shoot in the front of the squad, so I have plenty of time to get new atmospherics and build my card. This is all in PRS, so it might be different for whatever you are shooting.

Hope that helps.

Thanks.

The first match I'll be using this Kestrel at does not publish ranges ahead of time. Some of the stages we'll have prep time for and others will be 'blind' with ranging done on the clock.

I think I'll keep it simple and just go with pre-printed data in a wrist coach.

Just go to the range card view and set your intervals at 10 or 20 yards. Relatively quick to scroll through for the stages ranges and jot dope down on your wrist coach or whatever you’re using for dope.

Somebody smack me down if I’m wrong, but I just saw the new 5700 and it has a range card feature. So- you can get distances via match book, or ranging, enter into the Kestrel and create your own range card right on the Kestrel. Bad ass! I have the previous model Kestrel. I go to main screen, enter each range, write it on some tape with a sharpie, and stick it to the dope card holder on my rifle. If I’m on point here, the range card feature is way kool for a static position target engagement. Plop your big ass down, wait for the signal, look at Kestrel and go to work. If the stage / position requires movement, then maybe sharpie and tape are better.

For no time scenarios: I have a “luggage tag” range card holder on my rifle, and inside have data cards for -1500 to 12500 DA. I watch DA on my kestrel and make sure the right data card is visible.

With the way the weather changes on a typical match in Texas, you will benefit greatly by taking environmentals before each stage. Temp changes quickly, wind is rarely consistent, and DOF will change with each stage. If you are able to update before each stage, I highly recommend it. If not, just realize that you are leaving points on the table with some very low hanging fruit.

Use this set of cards unless targets are 1moa then use kestrel
