Kifaru Shape Charge

Recently bought a shape charge in Q4 , and added the sherman pocket to it as well. Primarily use it for long-gun gear. I can't compare it to the MR 3dayer or the komodo dragon unfortunately. I dont think you'd be underserved by the brands you mentioned above, probably comes to the CCs you want to carry, availability, and/or price.

I only have a few months of use on it but couple of things coming to mind since I bought:
  1. Kifaru quoted me 6-8 weeks for completion, ended up getting it in 4.5 weeks (right before holidays in December).
  2. I prefer one big pocket just to pour my shit into it, with only a few zippered pockets to organize critical items. Done are the days of each thing I own having a pocket or pouch, so the shape charge's setup met me on this preference;
  3. As most Kifaru kit, the construction lends itself to quality. I've had this loaded up to the max and have pulled the bag from random points and it always gives the impression everything is sewn well and supported smartly;
  4. I went with ranger green and the sherman pocket, to try to look "less moto/tactical" leaving my house (live in a blue city), so instead it looks like more camping/hiking gear

Happy to answer specific questions about it or take pics of what I have stuffed in mine for comparison. lmk

Thanks for the info. I currently have one of the 3 Day packs from MR and I'm trying to offload a Eberlestock. Just trying to figure out if saving the $100ish on an X-ray versus another 3 Day or Komodo.

Primarily going to use it for PRS matches but will also see use as a day pack.

Hard decision. Enivably, the more space you have the more shit you will fill it with. If you are confident with your packing and kit, go with x-ray (assuming it's smaller than shape charge?)

I had a SC with a Sherman pocket for a spell for an EDC bag, day hunt pack, with the intentions of using it as match pack too. Loved the lay out and bag in general but found it too small in the long run and sold it.

Looking to snag an Eastern Ruck to replace it. 2800 cu in so not near as stretched on room, but still small enough.

I have several Kifaru hunting pack set ups on the full frames, but they are overkill as a match pack IMO. Can’t compare them directly to the MRs as I’ve never used one.

I use nun SC in PRS/NRL matches and it’s fine. A little tight if you tend you later clothes and keep big jackets in your pack. My average match contents include:

RRS w/ anvil strapped to the side.
Henny Spotter 60
Leica HD-B 10x42
Pint sized railchanger X
Grippy changer
iPhone tripod clamp
Abel table
Fix it sticks
Msa Sordins
Cole tac ammo novel
Kestrel

Then other random items. Extra ear pro (foamies), data cards, markers/pens, lens cloth, eye pro, etc.

I use it with the Sherman pocket and I like it a lot. Coming from a g3 phantom and it’s much better for flights. Easier to shove in the overhead bin.

I’m also looking into a better pack for PRS and short hunts. I’m actually looking at the Kifaru 22 mag with spotting scope pocket. I’m currently running a Badlands 2200.

i bought a Komodo Dragon to change out from my Badlands Rap 18 as a shooting/PRS pack. One thing i found with the badlands is the webbing that helps it stand off your back, really makes the pockets long and skinny, the main pocket. i lost a lot in the bottom, as heavier stuff migrated down. The size just didnt feel like it was useful as i was taking half the stuff out to get to a box of ammo in the bottom.

I also have been using a very small tactical taylor concealed carry bag to use when hunting and its just too small, as i can hardly put my binos and a roll of TP in there. So i had picked up a Kifaru Tactical Zippy and have swapped over to it. the volume and large opening mouth has been great, i dont have the frame sheet in this one like i do on my urban zippy and i really like that its not in there. also like i can put a couple of mag pouches on the front and use them, as needed.

i need to sell the badlands, the tactical taylor concealed bag, and a Maxpedition Falcon II on to a new owner and new home this week and clear out some of the clutter.

has anyone used the sherman pocket as a gun bearer for a heavier prs style rifle? if so, how did it handle the weight ? does it carry it well or is it too much with 20lbs of gun and probably another 10 of gear for field style matches? I cant decide if i want to go shape charge or just get a frame and 22 mag to handle the weight better.

If packing a match weight rifle any distance and time, the Sherman is gonna suck. The SC doesn’t have enough internal support and the hip belt not enough surface area/padding to offer much comfort. I packed a 7lb rifle and bow on the back of the SC/Sherman with no problems.Threw a 20lb AI on it and I didn’t want to be packing it any farther than I had to between calling setups....or would be stages in a match. It’s simply not designed as a load bearing pack and there is way better options out there.

The 22 Mag is a peach. You would have a better frame, lumbar support, and a padded belt designed to handle/distribute weight.

I’m a huge fan of the Gun Bearer too. Puts the weight directly on your hips where it should be.

I’m running the shape charge with the 500d organizer pocket. I love it plenty of small storage areas room for a tripod on the side. I always sling my gun so that’s not an issue
