OK Guys weigh in - thinking of getting an e-book.

Kindle has my vote so far - if they have a touch screen model.

Good and bad - only if you have one, I can read reviews anywhere but trust you guys that have actually USED one.

Ipad. I use it at home, on vacation and at work. Easier to carry than a laptop with longer battery life. More apps than anyone else.
My wife has started school and most likely will be using it for taking notes (bluetooth keyboard) Time for me to buy a new one (darn)

Re: Kindle vs Nook vs Ipad

I've read that the i-pad has issues with the bright sunlight.

And my own experience, reading LCD before sleep - bad - keeps me awake (and sleep studies seem to verify this).

Don't get me wrong, the I-pad rocks for it's uses but costs a lot more too....

I am considering an i-pad tho, do it all.

The Nook has apps too tho...

Re: Kindle vs Nook vs Ipad

We've got an Entourage Edge, here. Got is as a browser and a reader for my Lady. It has two screens, and opens like a book. (these come in two sizes "Pocket" and "Full") This one is the "Full" size. The two 'book covers' can flip right around so that it is like a tablet, too.

We picked it up, because it is a reader, as well as a touch screen browser. Has 2 cameras and 2 mics (so what) but it also is WiFi. Point of that matter, is we're playing with the idea of a Range Target Camera here to which this will be the video display unit. It will hold itself up, has a LONG lasting battery, and seems to do everything my Lady wants it to do.

And she watches tv on it too, but don't ask me how.

I have an iPad as well and I do like it! I like that not only can I use it as an e-reader but it is a multimedia powerhouse! I am only pissed off that I have the gen 1 iPad with no camera... I am a sucker!

Re: Kindle vs Nook vs Ipad

I like the print on the Kindle a lot better... No glare, and it kinda feels right. I swore I'd never buy an e reader, but since I got it for a gift, I only feel a little guilty

Re: Kindle vs Nook vs Ipad

Kindle battery charge lasts for an age if you keep the wireless turned off when not needed. For an e-book reader, it is fantastic. Even if I end up getting an ipad or blackberry tablet, I'll be keeping the kindle.

I've got a Kindle and an Ipad2

If all you're looking for is a reader, get the Kindle hands down. The battery lasts forever, it's small, lightweight and portable.

If you want to do anything but read, get the Ipad. If you still want to read, get the Kindle. Reading on the Ipad sucks. It sucks outside, it sucks at night, rarely does it not suck-for reading.

Re: Kindle vs Nook vs Ipad

If you are wanting pretty much just a reader, the Kindle is the best thing out there. My wife doesn't go anywhere without hers. Pick up the leather case with the light in it and you can read it anywhere. Pick up the 3G model and you can download a book anywhere you go and it takes no time at all. The charge lasts a long time with the Kindle, and there are NO problems reading in bright sunlight (e.g. sunning at the beach). It doesn't have a touch screen, but in my opinion it doesn't need one. I've been really impressed with the Kindle.

iPad

You can get the kindle app on the iPad to compliment your ibook if you like. Why get an e-reader when all it does it read? Get the iPad and you can do that and everything else (internet, e-mail, movies, music, etc etc)

Mike is correct, I've used both and the Galaxy Tablet, Kindle is by far the best for reading.

Re: Kindle vs Nook vs Ipad

I'm an Apple whore, but purely for reading and touch screen, then the new Nook is the front runner. However, I've found myself constantly looking up references and tangents on things that pop up whilst reading which makes the iPad for quick web browsing invaluable.

I hardly ever read outdoors so the bright light situation is moot. I read Winnie the Pooh to my boy on the iPad and he loves it...

Re: Kindle vs Nook vs Ipad

Problem with a Nook is that it doesn't have the Amazon anywhere downloading (not talking about the wi-fi only model) that you NEVER HAVE TO PAY FOR. On the Nook, that's the thing that they don't tell you - get somewhere that isn't on the network, and it becomes possible that you're going to incur charges.

Second thing is this - how long is Baarnes & Noble going to be around? Because Amazon isn't going anywhere. Amazon service is top notch as well.

Third, you don't need a touch screen on a reader - it just adds weight and something else that can break.

Take into consideration the price, the technology, the support, the readability under a spectrum of conditions and the weight and you'll see that the Kindle wins handily.

Re: Kindle vs Nook vs Ipad

I have the Ipad 2 and the kindle. I prefer the kindle for reading. I fly a lot so wether it's the sun light coming in from across the plane or the light above your seat there is no glair with the kindle; I can't say that for the Ipad. If I had to go some where and I could only bring one it would be the Ipad because it's more useful than a kindle.

Re: Kindle vs Nook vs Ipad

What is it going to be used for most of the time? If you are going to use it for reading books most of the time you should buy the kindle. If you want something to browse the internet and read an occasional book get the ipad. The ipad is more expensive but is much more versatile. In my experience you can't use the ipad outside in direct sunlight. I have tried and it shuts itself off to protect it from overheating. If you can find some shade you will be ok.

Re: Kindle vs Nook vs Ipad

I bought the Nook Color for my wife for the following reasons:

1. It supports open standards like epub.
2. She can use it to checkout e books from the library online.
3. Rooted, it makes a decent Android tablet.

The only con is that the screen doesn't display well in sunlight. For that, you need a Kindle or the original Nook.

ipads are great, but way overpriced for an e-reader.
