The pure fluorite crystal used in the TSN-883 and TSN-884 scopes is the optimum optical material for reducing chromatic aberration, providing the ultimate viewing experience.
The extraordinary light gathering capability supports observation during dusk and during dawn.
All spotting scopes are waterproof to JIS protection class 7 and filled with dry nitrogen gas to prevent the lens from fogging.
JIS 7 = Japanese Industrial Standard / class 7 = Protected against the effects of temporary immersion in water.
Dual focus mechanism (Quick and fine focusing)
The well established Kowa focus system has progressed to a new dual focus system. The quick focus, with a large and easy to turn knob, will focus from infinity to five meters in two revolutions.
The fine focus, with smooth movements and pinpoint accuracy, is extremely useful at high magnifications and for digiscoping systems.
Eyepiece locking mechanism
Kowa's standard eyepiece bayonet mount has been passed down to these new spotting scopes with a new attractive feature. An eyepiece locking
mechanism has been added to the mount to prevent the eyepiece from getting lost or falling out unexpectedly.
Magnesium alloy body
The magnesium alloy body made by a sophisticated molding process called thixotrophic molding has the feel and strength of a traditional metal body with decreased weight when compared to other large-diameter scopes.
The rugged structure can tolerate the severest conditions and provides confidence and a sense of security for the user.
"PROMINAR" Lens
One of the major causes of deterioration of viewing quality in optics is chromatic aberration (color blur). Chromatic aberration occurs due to the dispersion of light and the different wavelengths of light focusing on different positions, resulting in a red or purple fringing around the image. The optimum optical material to minimize chromatic aberration is fluorite crystal.
A fluorite crystal with extremely low dispersion characteristics is used for the convex lens of the TSN-883/884 PROMINAR models. In place of an ordinary optical glass lens, the concave lens paired with the fluorite crystal lens is made of glass with special dispersion properties to reduce the chromatic aberration to a further degree.
This combination of fluorite crystal and glass with special dispersion properties nearly eliminates chromatic aberration and redefines the standards of color brilliance.
This technology is the result of many years of optical design and has realized great reduction in chromatic aberration, while maintaining a large diameter lens and high contrast images when compared with conventional models.
The XD lens used in our TSN-883/884 PROMINAR models has characteristics similar to those of fluorite crystal to significantly reduce the chromatic aberration. All lenses are environmentally friendly Eco-Glass. (Eco-Glass is an environmentally friendly glass that does not contain lead or other harmful substances.)
Fluorite crystal
Kowa uses the fluorite crystal exclusively in its flagship spotting scope and large binocular models. The fluorite used as make an optical lens is an artificially grown mono-crystal with "ultra-low dispersion", a characteristic that ordinary optical glass does not have.
It is an ideal lens material that almost completely eliminates chromatic aberration (color blur). The fluorite crystal produced by the sophisticated processing technology that Kowa has accumulated over the years guarantees the ultimate viewing experience.
Compact
The telephoto lens design of using 5 lens elements in 4 groups has successfully shortened the overall length of the scope while keeping a large diameter objective lens without sacrificing optical performance.
The adoption of an inner focusing system has made the prism box light and compact and at the same time decreases the amount of image movement when compared to conventional prism focusing systems.
The highly achromatized objective lens makes the scope as compact as a 60mm class scope without sacrificing performance.

Doug, people have so much brand loyalty as though they are sponsored. My money goes to who is producing the best for what I can afford. The equivalent level Swarovski as far as money goes is not even close. The new version with 95 mm objective is top notch but it’s what $4500?
To be fair if someone I trusted didn’t tell me about it I probably wouldn’t have known.

I purchased the Kowa Genesis binos from you and love them. Having owned the larger Swarovski version which I loved, I wanted to downsize and compared the smaller version of both side by side on mullitiple occassions and finally decided the Kowa was not just comprable to the Swaro but was actually slightly better (to my eyes). I am curious as to whether Kowa makes a smaller spotting scope with the pure fluorite lens? I would prefer something a little smaller if available with the same specs as the 88mm version. Thanks

Just curious. Is there a discernible difference between the TSN-553 and the 773 Prominar as far as optics quality relative to the glass differences setting aside for a moment the different objective lens sizes.

The difference between the 553 and 773 will be more due the light transmission more than optical quality

I have an older Kowa TSN-2 and a guy at the club has the Prominar 773. They are most excellent spotters. Great for spotting at matches and practices, where you are spotting most of the day. Much less eye fatigue than with some others.

If not for running into someone at a match who was using an 884, I would never have had the opportunity to look through one of these. I'm glad that stranger was kind enough to let me spot for a while, because the scope blew me away, and I now own one. Kowa is a really cool company. Virtually no marketing, and yet they compete with the very best optics companies in the world.

This is quite true. My 30+ year old TSN-2 has been responsible for at least two 880 series sales just locally to me. People use mine for a bit during one of our matches or at one of our LR practices and are blown away. I only leave the 20X Wide eyepiece on there as the 30-60 zoom usually shows too much mirage down here (Florida). I would love to have the extra coin for a new 880 series, but that's not likely to happen anytime soon.

My biggest gripe with Kowa, Meopta and Hawke is that they do not spend much of anything on marketing. Great products that many folks have no knowledge of. Makes no sense to me

I for one am not suggesting novelty videos. But investing in a bigger distributor network might help bring this incredible company out of the hardcore hobbyist fringes and into the mainstream. Kowa's products can certainly stand on their own, it is simply a matter of consumer access.

I agree that R&D is extremely important and funds should not be taken from there to spend on marketing, however, if a company has the best product and nobody knows about it that's not a good thing.

I come from a NRA/DCM high power shooting background. Nearly every HP shooter in the country knows about Kowa spotters, at least partially due to their LER eyepieces. Kowa more or less had the HP & prone LR market sewed-up for a long time, even though there were scopes with better optical quality available. Again, they held their market share among HP shooters mainly due to how well their LER eyepieces worked for positional shooting. I've used several other shooters' 821M scopes, and they're superior to my little TSN-661 when it comes to seeing mirage. But due to the premium price for the florite glass Prominar series, I've never had the pleasure of looking through one. The HP shooter market is such a small segment of the population, very few other optical companies have worked at making LER eyepieces, or Kowa would have more competition.
