KRG impact action mod

Im sure it's been covered in threads but after a ton of research I couldnt find a thread that covered WHAT exactly to file away.

Hopefully this helps those who are going to run the krg impact action combo.

This little ridge around the screw is what needed to be reduced. As well as a low profile screw head, which I just filed down as well

Using a small, flexible file I slowly started to reduce that lip. Of course it helps to tape off the surrounding areas to avoid unwanted filing.

After a few hours of filing and checking the trigger hanger clearance I finally got enough material removed. I did test this without the front trigger hanger screw installed.

I went to the local hardware store to match threads and bought a couple spares. Took them home and filed down one of them to be low profile. It now sits flush without any wobble from the hanger or screw.

Update:

1/4-28×1/2" front screw with a few washers stacked under the spine of the chassis...will need to order the same diameter and thread for the rear but needs to be 1 3/4" or 2"...will have to find someplace local.

Another update...KRG sent out a long enough action screw. ( 1 3/4" long, same thread pitch as the front screw)

Cant say enough about the customer service from them. Grabbed a birchwood casey black touch up pen for aluminum (looks like a blue capped sharpie) and took care of the raw aluminum showing. Matched pretty well. Takes several time to go over it but ut matches flawlessly. Apply, let dry, wipe away with finger, repeat. When done add a drop of oil on it, wipe excess and youre done.

It couldve gone by faster if I had a mill or something mechanical but I had the time and was in no rush.

Low profile hanger screw, low profile trigger guard screw and that little bit of material was all I needed to get it to sit flush.

Oh and the screw lengths were another variable but nothing major.

If it can be pinned id be cool with it. Help those out that are looking for the same combo.

I’m debating whether to send it off or just finish the instal without that screw, seems like a tight enough fit that it’s not necessary. I know that’s not the right answer but I’m impatient and don’t want to go through the hassle of sending it back to Altus...

I didnt check how far the screws actually go into the action. Im not sure if theyre tapped to a certain length or all the way through the action like the action screws are. If they arent, removing that much material (equal to that as the ridge that i removed) would probably cause the screw to stick out anyways. Not 100% sure, i just know from talking with krg cs that the pics they sent, other people had removed the shelf.

Ah gotcha. I’ve never used a trigger hanger before, and actually don’t even know what they look like. I’m about to order my action and am very excited. Going to be my first custom action. Now that there is a write up on how to do the mod, I’m going to jump in and do it. That was one of the things holding me back from getting an Impact

I went back and forth heavily with krg and impact through emails and private messages to figure out what i needed to do. I was seeing too many posts not being as specific so i figured id try to help out. My contribution as a newbie lol

I do not have it off the top of my head but i did ask impact for so low profile screws and they sent some out to me free of charge.

I think he’s referring to the washers that go between the action screw heads and the backbone. Remington clones require one on the rear and two up front.

I did at first until i filed down the trigger hanger screw a bit. I found a coupler for the TH screw so it allowed me to hold it better with some pliers, and then i used the dremel to lower the head to fit

An alternative that worked for me, I called Impact and requested some low profile trigger hanger screws and ordered a -15 trigger hanger. This raised the trigger up a bit more and removed the interference.

It’s pretty easy! Just take your time and for the front trigger hanger screw I used a pan head Phillips screw that came off an outlet. I believe it’s a 6-32 thread I had to cut it a little. But as your going set the action with the trigger hanger installed in and move it around till you don’t feel it touch that lip anymore.

Following this thread I did it on a Gen 6. A dremel and cold beer job. Removed material from the chassis, replaced trigger guard screw with a flat head machine screw, and ground down the front trigger hanger screw head by 1/2.

I removed the material as shown above on the stock, but I also filed down the trigger hanger and trigger hanger screw a bit.

Felt like I was taking too much off of the trigger guard screw. This helped alleviate that

Joe Pieczynski of Advanced Innovation LLC in Austin helped me with the work.
Everything fits great/torques well with no aftermarket fasteners.

Can you make this combo work without a new front action screw? If you get a new front trigger hanger screw and file down the lip and hex bolt on the chassis planning to do this tomorrow with a Dremel

Yes, I ran both factory action screws on mine. Just be sure to use the washers provided from KRG.
Easiest way to handle the hanger is to file/grind the hanger down 1.5mm on the front area of the hanger; this way you can retain the original hanger screw as well.
Chassis bolt on the backbone must be taken down as well or buy a lower profile.

Yes, we took 1 mil off the front side of the hanger. You can retain the trigger action screw without modification.

I didn't have to use anything other than the factory hardware but I was able to machine the chassis backbone bolt down and still retain enough depth for proper torque. A lower profile bolt to replace it is fairly easy find though.

Resurrecting an old thread... was there any material milled off of the hanger?
I'm thinking if pulling the trigger on a W3 but would rather have it professionally milled out of it means I can keep all the original hardware.

So another alternative to prevent milling the hanger....get a -15 hanger AND low profile screws from impact. That removed any need to mill the trigger hanger or screws. If they don't have the screws you can find them at a hardware store.

I used this thread. Didn't have to mod the hanger. I called Impact and commo'd a lot by email w KRG. They sent some appropriate screws (K at Impact actually read my mind "low profile screws."

I got a router tip for the dremel and taped everything else off. I am not a machinist or even have a lot of skills. I just went super slow and took a little material at a time. The pics here and from KRG made it easy (still somewhat nerve racking but it worked out).

If you have access to a mill it's a lot easier but can be done with hand tools.

Did you have to shorted the hanger screw length any? I thoughy about going this route too but was worried id bottom out before i reached the new lower shelf of the hanger

I didn’t change the length of the screw at all by taking material from the threads. Taking some off of the top of the hangar screw and some material from hangar itself should give the distance needed to make everything fit properly

What size of screw is this? I tried to find a similar at my hardware store but no luck.

Eventually I dremeled down a T-15 and In order to make it fit into the action without bottoming out now their is noting left to grab on to with a torx bit.

My hardware store had nothing else that would work so I’ll probably need to order whatever this screw is called in the photo.
