Fieldcraft Krylon and Sponge Painting????

I want to try this on a build I'm finishing up. I'm confused about something though. Do you spray the sponge and then apply it, or do you spray the paint in a container, dip the sponge and then apply it? Anything else I need to know before attempting?

I spray a little bit into a plastic lid and dip the sponge in the paint. You can practice a bit and try different things like back ground color, using small templates etc.

For the base medium/mixed brown color I like, I spray the khaki and brown colors at the same time, one can in each hand with the sprays hitting the same spot together......adjust shade by how close one or the other is to the rifle.

After the base, I find a piece of natural sea sponge that makes a good "pattern" when dabbed on a surface. I simply spray the piece of sponge with the paint can (wearing rubber gloves).

I spray it on cardboard and dip the sponge into the puddle. You can spray the sponge directly as well. I find both work the same.

Thats a good idea about spraying the two colors at the same time, Ive never really liked the Krylon tan, I dont know what color it is but it dont look tan to me. I had even thought about giving my rifle a base coat of duracoat or alumihide in the "tan or brown" color that suits me better and just using krylon "green & dark brown" for the rest of the job. Ill have to tinker around with mixing the krylon and see what I get.

I ran into a problem while using a synthetic type sponge. The paint began to eat my sponge like it would Styrofoam. When I do this again I'd do two things differently. One, I'm using a real sponge. And two, I'm not going to use spray paint. It dries too fast. I'm just going to get a nice durable can paint and mix my colors, apply with sponge, and cover with a matte clear.

ewoaf, I used one of the cheap synthetic sponges, but I had no problem. But I did not let it stay on the sponge very long.

Just FYI for wood stock owners. Your local paint store has dozens of shades of wood stain. I have a Mauser 98 30-06 in a Bishop Stock that shoots so well ( Dev-Con Bedded by USAF MArksmanship Unit, with a unknown custom barrel), that I treated it to a make-over. I parkerized the metal and did the stock in 3 shades of brown/green/gray wood stain. The hand-rubbed oil finish over the stain is dull (Birchwood-CAsey Stock Sheen), but the woods' grain coupled with the multiple colors made a very nice camo stock that would serve well in both hunting and tactical applications.

I did this to a Remington 870 using the Krylon Camo paints.

One thing I discovered was that I could "edit" what I did not like.

Just paint over with the base coat and try again (grin).

The point is: Don't be afraid to fail. Just take your time, let each coat dry and learn as you go.

Also, it never hurts to use a synthetic 870 or 10/22 stock as a "trainer".

Sprayed the whole thing with tan kylon first, then added other colors by spraying a puddle on cardboard to dip the sponge in. I used torn up "natural" sponges.

Meet Thor(.308) and Son of Thor(.22).... I wanted something a little different, so I went to a hobby shop after Christmas and got some leaves and crap for $2.59. I borrowed my buddys camo paint and whipped this up. For the time being, it will do.

Nice rifles fellas..... Mine does not look as good as it did before the beating it has taken, but here it is. I candy stripped the stock with Tan and Brown Krylon, then used OD, Tan, and Brown to sponge it. I cut several pieces of real Sea Sponge and sprayed the paint directly on it, then applied and blended to my liking.

I have a black remington sps stock layin around that I would like to practice this on.

If I wanted to do camo, do I need to spray a based coat on first, or just leave it black and start sponging on different colors.

Thanks J.Boney! That's a fine looking rifle you have there yourself! I need to take some updated pics of the .308 as it has more brown in it now days, similar to yours.

The NXS has stood the test and just keeps on keeping on. It's seen thousands of rounds, swapped from gun to gun, and drug from pillar to post. Wished I had the funds to buy a couple more, but I'll just have to make do with what I've got for now.

What colors did you use? </div></div>

OD green and Tan at Wal Mart. Base coat of OD green, then sponge on the tan until you think it is light enough. If you want it to look more like ACU, use a gray, or OD green base misted with gray.
