First, I apologize for the length of this, after re-reading the new Sightron SIII offerings thread it just got me thinking about who's listening to shooters and who's listening to the marketing department.

At least a few times a year we have the "Leupold Bashing Posts", the "Why Didn't XYZ do it this way" posts, the "No Customer Service posts and of course the "Does Anyone XYZ Optics Company even shoot a rifle" posts? These are all in response to us, active shooters in the sport, being disgusted at poor customer service, mismatched reticles/knobs, goofy marketing invented ideas that have no use in shooting and just the overall thoughts that optics companies are designing products to look good in SWAT and Field & Stream versus actually performing good in the field.

Enter Vortex Optics. Now I heard of Vortex what seems like several years ago, most likely in a post from Doug at CameralandNY.com introducing some new special on a hunting scope. They didn't interest me then, they appeared to be a budget hunting scope that was well made, but I had those and didn't need more. What did interest me some was the "claim" of a great warranty, I put that in quotes because I figured out later it was more than just a claim, they really were that good. Anyway, Vortex like all others had (and still does) the scopes with mildot reticles with moa knobs, appealing to hunters and some shooters that "needed" the mildot but weren't really quite sure how to use it. I saw a few reviews on Vortex scopes, guys are happy with them, good glass and great warranty for the money, yada yada yada. I know that several guys have decided to use the Vortex Razor Binoculars since they are damn near the glass that the premium euro binocs are, but about 1/3 the cost. Still, I didn't need new binoculars so I'd look through the Razors at the store and admire the glass value, but never really bought anything Vortex. Then, a couple months ago, two events really got me thinking more seriously about Vortex.

Event #1 - Introduction of the Razor 5-20x50 HD, Vortex version of a real tactical scope, it appeared to be a success for their first venture in this area.

Event #2 - This was the real one that got me. Someone was asking about Vortex binoculars, not the top of the line Razors, but a lower model. Opinions were shared and stories were told, then a guy from Oregon chimed in that his Vortex binoculars (one of the midrange series I believe) had failed him and leaked if I remember right. He hadn't bothered to call customer service and figured he'd have to buy another pair of something to get him through hunting season. It seems like within 15 minutes this guy called "Sam@Vortex" was on the thread and simply stated that he was sorry for the inconvenience and if he the member would PM Sam his address he'd have a new pair sent to him in the morning so he'd have them for that weekends hunt. WTF? No "can you send a picture" or "what did you do to break them" or any other excuse, just a simple apology and resolution. WOW! I've never seen a Leupold, Burris, Bushnell or any other rep I can think of on here, much less one offering to take his time to fix our problems (and all without having to deal with someone in customer service).

Sorry again for the length of this post, I had know idea when I started that I'd ramble this much.

Anyway, enter SHOT 2010. I know that we all have been drooling at the announcements made about Vortex by the vendors here. They are adding 2 very nice reticles to the Razor HD Scope, some cool red dot sights, compact spotters, etc. And of course the Viper PST!

What I'm most excited about though is that someone at Vortex WAS ACTUALLY LISTENING. It appears that Vortex with the introduction of the Viper PST, has broken the mold out there and is going to produce a scope that has quality glass, mil reticle and turrets, illuminated reticle and do it all for under $900!! I think we all know that if these are anywhere near what we're hoping in terms of quality that they'll sell like hotcakes and be impossible to get for a few months (pre-order now from your friendly SH.com vendor). I think we all expected this from Leupold years ago, maybe even Bushnell in their tactical line, but apparently they were too big and too set in their ways to get on it. Yes, Leupold has finally announced the M5 mil knobs, but I'll bet FFP and illumination w/ M5 knobs will cost you close to $2k but at that price I'll take a Nightforce or Razor HD.

I've decided to get a Vortex Razor HD to run for a while and will be picking up at least one Viper PST for my varmint rifle when I can. It's so nice that I'll be able to have consistent reticles, knobs, etc from a $2,000 scope to a sub $900 scope, that's something you can't do with any other manufacturer that I know of right now.

Kudos to Vortex for actually listening.

Re: Kudos to Vortex

Vortex and their employees are first class, everything they do is well thought out and executed perfectly, not details are missed.

We represent over 150 different manufacturers and I rate Vortex #1 in regards to professionalism, standing behind their product, doing what they say they are going to do and all around business practices. If you ask them a question you get an answer the same day. If you request product support materials you get them right away. Basically you ask one time and it is done, no having to follow up and check on things. If there is a discrepancy on a P.O. , packing list, invoice, etc., it only takes one call or one email for it to be rectified.

Vortex is a model company and a direct reflection of those who are running it.

I could not agree with you more Jason.

Re: Kudos to Vortex

SWFA, your comment about support materials reminded me of something. They have great resources on their website, over 20 videos I'd guess. They also have a 36 page pdf that you can download for lots of good info.

As if all this ass kissing will get you a free scope, give it up Jason.

Re: Kudos to Vortex

Well said Jason! I'm so excited about the PST that I can hardly wait for them to get here! Hopefully since I pre-ordered one from SWFA as soon as I saw their post here, I'll be able to get one soon after they come in. The PST has all of the features in a scope that I didn't think I'd ever be able to afford, like matching knobs and reticles, illumination, and zero stops. Those features in a NF cost right at $2000. I want to slap it on my duty rifle as soon as the brown truck drops it off, but I will most likely run it on my Savage for a while to make sure it is everything that I am confident it will be, unless of course Lowlight gets ahold of one and runs it through the paces first! LOL. I can forsee a time when all of my optics, including binos and spotters, having the Vortex name on them. Kudos to Vortex for being a company that listens to what it's customers want and being committed to taking care of them after the sale!

Re: Kudos to Vortex

have their Bino...Love them (two pair)

I SCREWED up and dropped a pair....(<span style="font-size: 17pt"><span style="font-weight: bold">I screwed up</span></span>). Their VIP warranty...second to none. If they continue down this road they will bump a few of the players out of the game.

Re: Kudos to Vortex

I have a preorder in for a 4-16 PST FFP mil/mil to replace my Mark 4. I would go the Vortex route any day over Leupold. Much more scope for your money in my opinion.

Re: Kudos to Vortex

We have both bino's and scopes with more on order. I plan to continue to support Vortex as they work to meet the demands of unknown distance shooting community.

Re: Kudos to Vortex

We have a pretty large order with Vortex for the PST scopes so keep the pre-orders coming.

>>>>Place Pre-Orders Here<<<<

Here is a quote from Sam posted on www.OpticsTalk.com

<span style="font-style: italic">Seriously, we don't mind the feedback. I'd rather be humble and make our products better than arrogant and have people cursing our products behind our backs.

Re: Kudos to Vortex

Jason makes a very well thought out post...changes of opinions in "our" industry seem to spin in a circle and come back around with different names. For awhile Leupold is the "standard" then its junk etc etc.

I value Jasons thoughts and I really have true belief and respect for the opinions of Chris and his crew at SWFA.

I will say I have NEVER heard one bad word about Vortex....even guys who buy their $100 scopes say for the money they are well worth it. I have never seen a Vortex in Person let alone sat behind one.

I just wonder when a new company comes out or a long standing company gets into the scope business.....they have limited stock...backorders, preoders galore. Cutting edge this and that.

I think of a great company.......huge part of the history of our great country Springfield Armory. They got into the scope business and had a cutting edge scope.....huge preorders until people started to shoot them like we do........hard. Then they became a running joke. But at the time they came out they seemed to be listening to the shooters.......heck they have the greatest 1911 shooter of all time on staff there. Now they are worth $200 if the are NIB(except for some "custom builder" on GB who thinks its still a $1200 scope).

Then I think of a new company going after government contracts...cutting edge....waiting list is like courtside seats for the Lakers.......then they go from being Xotic to extinct.

I am always a little bit cautious of new brands the get everyones hair on fire. Heck I was just reading a thread and some guys have had their high dollar S&B's go down on them....now I know anything that can built in turn can be broken. Complaints go around about Leupold, IOR, and now even S&B. However those scope owners are alot better off than the guys trying to get service for their Springfields or Xotics and maybe some other names I am failing to mention.

Personally I hope Vortex knocks em dead.......I hope a year from now their product is up......their customer service is just as good and I can get one here in 3 days versus 3 months. And I hope they go after goverment contracts or at least get group purchased by individual units and so forth and get battle tested and we see Vortex signs and swag at all the big rifle matches.

But until then I am still thinking about Jason and his very good concept of continuing patterns in this industry.

Re: Kudos to Vortex

I first heard about Vortex in the late summer of 2006 on a local hunting forum and soon after bought a pair of their 12x50 Vultures (I wonder what they replaced these with). They have been great Binos for what I paid for them. Not much bigger than my Brunton 10x42s, a little lighter, but much brighter/clearer picture.

I've used them now for 3+ years with no problems and still feel they were a bargain for what I got.

Re: Kudos to Vortex

I had to jump in. I was the guy that the binos failed on. All I can say is wow! Had a new pair to me in less than a week! No questions, just send the old pair back when the new ones arrive.

Everone will have a failure now and then, it's how you handle it that makes the difference. I have a feeling they are going to give them all a run for there money!

Willys46

I will purchase more vortex products!

Re: Kudos to Vortex

Well...I am the new owner of the Vortex Crossfire 6-24x50 (Thank you Brady @ SWFA)I can say I've looked through a good many scopes, none all that great compared to some peoples "standards" here. I can say my 99 dollar scope is very bright and very clear. So bright that in normal day light my eyes need to re-adjust after making a shot. The sight picture is very clear and crisp out to the edges even on full magnification. The turrents seem to be accurate thus far (although only tested to 100yds so far) I really do enjoy this scope so far. I plan to upgrade in 6 months or so and put the Crossfire on my 10/22. You can bet my new scope will be none other than a Vortex as well as from the guys at SWFA.

Both fantastic folks to deal with! Thanks again Brady for rushing my scope, rings and base a few weeks ago as well as Mikes. You got us out in the woods and dialed in just in time for our last hunt of the season.

Re: Kudos to Vortex

Vortex is a fantastic company to deal with. I have written reviews on quite a few scopes in the last few years, including Vortex.

When I say something bad about a scope or a particular feature of it, usually someone from that company will either get defensive about it or simply poochy-faced.

Not the folks from Vortex. Whenever I find something I do not like with their products they straight up tell me that it is duly noted and is being looked at. It sure looks like they pay a lot more attention to criticism than to the praise, and that is a good way of getting to the top of the game and staying there.

Re: Kudos to Vortex

Thanks for chiming in Willys46.

Derek, if you're interested, when I get my next Vortex setup I'd be happy to try and make a range trip with you so you can look through a couple Vortex's....as well as some other scopes I shoot as well.

Re: Kudos to Vortex

Jasonk I can't agree more. Vortex is the best company I've ever dealt with, Sam has always been extraordinarily easy to deal with and very open minded about any input I have had. Sam and all at Vortex great job on listening to users and making the best product for the dollar in optics today!

Re: Kudos to Vortex

Yep, thanks and kudos to Vortex for their "open ears to a market incredibly vocal about what it wants in a riflescope".

Not long ago the frustration level about scope companies seemingly content with having us consumers take-what-we-get-and-like-it was not hard to find here on the 'hide.

There were basically two sides chiming in on this issue.

Some would sort of fantasize about a revolt with their $$$ and not settle for the current offerings until they 'forced' the scope companies to listen to them.

Others would chime in and say to get used to it and just choose from among what is available, they're not so bad, and btw if it's good enough for me it's good enough for you...

I was more of the former camp, but not holding my breath.

I love it when a victory over an issue that really needed one reduces that issue to history. That's how I view Vortex' response to our needs, as a victory, and I congratulate them.

Now, doesn't that deserve a Vortex cap or something?

Re: Kudos to Vortex

Thanks Jason........I read your thoughtful post but failed to notice your friendly local' I might take you up on that offer...nice to see another hide member in SW WA. I have heard nothing but great things about Vortex........and for that I hope Vortex doesn't go the way of the dinosauers and Springfield scopes and Xotic and .....

Kinda what I was wondering as well. Assembled here I assume, but where are gears coming from?

Re: Kudos to Vortex

Jason,

You posted this in another thread the other day.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: jasonk</div><div class="ubbcode-body">I bought a $99 Vortex to use for a couple weeks until my "real scope" came in. I'll tell you what, that $99 Vortex kicks some serious ass for the money.</div></div>

Was the scope you were referring to this one?

http://swfa.com/Vortex-6-24x50-Crossfire-Rifle-Scope-P43585.aspx

I ask, because I just just plunked down some cash on another rifle and need something cheap until I can swing one of these PST's.

Thanks,

-Pat

Yes. The quote from Sam was in reference to the PST line. The Razor's are made in Japan.
