Based on the video evidence:
KR isn't a hero for the reasons Maser pointed out (how old am I, that I have lived to agree with the binky boy?)
That said, he showed extraordinary poise in a shit situation. He put himself on the scene, but not into the situation. Dead felon #1 mistakenly sought KR out under the impression that KR was the same guy DF1 had an altercation with earlier. Once that ball was rolling, shit went downhill fast. KR originally let the 1 armed faggot mentioned above go, when 1AF raised his hands and feigned surrender (only to attack KR as soon as he lowered his rifle). I'd wager most people in the same situation would have shot first, thought later. 1AF deservedly took a round to the arm for his faggotry.
Regardless of the how/why he was there, he did what he had to do to survive. He never should have been charged, and should promptly be acquitted.
As for his 19yo friend, guy admitted he took money from KR to buy a rifle on KR's behalf. The definition of a straw purchase. He's fucked.
However, I don't personally agree with the way the straw purchase law is applied. The two young men did what they did to get around some BS regulations that wouldn't have been an issue in most other places ( a confluence of ownership, transportation, and hunting laws that made it so KR couldn't just borrow a riffle from a friend to hunt with iirc). Like most laws involving firearms, the original intention of the law is agreeable (keep shit bags who haven't been caught from buying guns for shit bags who have been caught), but it is more often used to hamstring otherwise honest gun owners who didn't realize they were breaking the law.
For those of you conflating this situation with getting/giving a gift of gun, I'll make it easy: If you buy a gun with your own money and give it to someone = not a straw purchase. If you take money from someone to buy a gun for them = straw purchase.
