We demoed these new tubes on the night of the 16th (one night off of the new moon) out in the middle of No and Where north of Denver and it was STUPID dark!

My hand select ITT PINNACLES (9815 SLGs each above SNR 29) in My BNVDs were even falling on their face. In fact the fellow we were doing the demo for said, "these look like shit!"

Next we showed him the new L3 MilSpecs and he opted for the L3 over the ITT tubes.

As far as I know, this is the first sanctioned sale by a large manufacturer (L3 or ITT) to the civilian market. The ITT MIL SPEC units that were sold when NVEC went of business were new old stock due to an Air Force contract that was defunded. As such NVEC was left holding the bag and the units were sold off to the civilian market and they did not come from ITT.

These units come directly from L3 factory.

Got my L3 Omni 8 & 3x magnifier set up from MODarmory last week. Couldn't wait to get it set up right away.

I have limited NV experience outside the aircraft systems I operated before I retired. This is my first venture into arms mounted NV. Camille was great help getting me set up.

This new L3 set up on my AR behind a Micro T1 is going to be just the ticket for night varmints and some hogs when I can get back to TX.

Sounds like you have a nice set up going there. I might recommend a good weapons mounted IR illuminator and Camille has them there. It is from Luna optics, and is the model LN-ELIR-3. It is an extended range Illuminator. It is small, easy to use and relatively cheap. I have two mounted on various weapons. I also have a very good hand held combo light from Surefire. It is both IR and white.

Camille has them also and she will take good care of you as you already know. Let me know if you get to Texas,

Mikeltee: It depends on what you mean by "better." Yes they are auto-gated. The ITT is known for a better screen quality but the L3 OMNI 8 has a higher recoil rating. What would be the difference from the TNVC TNV/PVS-14? They claim it is made in-house with all new parts to a higher standard than mil-spec using either ITT or L3 tubes. Also, as I understand it, Omni 8 is actually a lower standard than Omni 7 because it was too hard to measure up to in quantity (the TNVC model is still Omni 8, but their claim is that it is superior with less flaws because they have control)? Maybe that is why 14's have gone down so much in the last 2 years?

These NOD's are also cheaper than mil L3 or ITT tubes (because they assemble them they say, which sort of makes sense).

I just want to get the best 14 since I can't afford the $16,000 for the PSQ-20 (yeah, civvies can get 'em now) and not hear the end of it from my wife. Bottom line, why should I pay $400 more for these (and don't say "because it is mil spec").

I'd like to hear from the OP, but I'm actually more interested in hearing from folks that have used both or seen both side by side, say at a convention or some such. Thanks.

Strykervet – great question.
First, we do not know what, who, where every reseller on the internet PVS-14’s are assembled. At least you are aware that the term Milspec can mean a variety of things.

Second, I can tell you why we are different then, what I would look for in a PVS-14 vendor and you can draw your own conclusion.

As far as tube specifications / quality. Simply put we order our intensifiers tubes to a higher specification. How do I know: We state directly on our website, warranty cards and on the forums what our / a customer’s minimum specification would be. We list specific numbers from the intensifier tube specification sheet versus using terms such as “milspec” “military specification” “ITT pinnacle” “special forces kit”. As an example if you were going to purchase a Ford pick up truck. If a Ford Dealer just advertised “Ford”. Does this tell you what kind of truck you are getting? What if they say Ford 4x4? No, because it could be a Ford Ranger or a Ford Super Duty F350.

In addition to quality / specifications we talk about screen quality. Do you want a high performance system but a nice spot in Zone 1? Our image clean definition is: No bright spots, no 3,000ths or larger spots, no scintillation, no shading, no fixed pattern noise, no chicken wire, no honeycomb, etc etc etc.

Other resellers will state “there will be no blemishes in zone 1 (center of tube). But, the tubes are what they are.” What is a blemish?

To reference your question about assembly and it lowering the cost this is probably only true of “garage / kitchen table builds.” The facility, test equipment and trained personnel are a huge expense and couldn’t be sustained with only selling a few PVS-14’s on the internet. We are a full service Night Vision Repair Depot. What this means is we have a facility, equipment and staff that does this work 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year. Other vendors without a night vision repair depot are at the mercy of their distributors as far as repairs and warranty claims. At MODArmory we offer a 5 year warranty on ITT Pinnacle PVS-14s. Our average turn around time for our customers is two weeks. You may ask how can MODArmory repair my unit in two weeks. This is because we stock PVS-14’s and every part and piece imaginable. In addition, we guarantee our work for 1 year. If we did not have a facility, personnel and the proper equipment we could not afford too guarantee our work. ITT and L3’s average turn around time is 3 to 6 months for repair work.
Now assembling a PVS-14 is not difficult and anybody can be trained on how to build a PVS-14. It is the warranty support infrastructure that separates OEM manufactures from “kit builders.”

I’ve attempted to address “milspec” in other posts and no one seems to understand. In the future we may start listing all of our products as “Milspec used by Airforce special forces, Navy Paratroopers and Army underwater demolition teams.” We may even go one step further and sell “NASA spec.. the only night vision to go to outer space.” What does NASA spec mean? Its top secret, cant tell you. This is only satire (do not be confused ).

A small sentence in the above novel that is easily missed is that “we stock PVS-14s.” We receive countless calls of “I’ve had my PVS-14 on order for 4 weeks – 8 weeks… do you have one in stock”. The answer is I could ship you out a ITT Pinnacle or the L3 OMNI 8, Today! Alright, as long as your order is placed before 3pm – Mountain Time. I keep a box of Kleenex on my desk for these calls because I know that the customer has shelled out $3195.00 and is getting.. “it shipped.” “didn’t meet our quality, waiting..” WAIT! I thought you said you order your units to a certain specification which is on the purchase order. This means that you should never have received the unit in the first place!

In the end it really just boils down to this, we sell the highest quality night vision that money can buy. We stock it and we support it. This is our business and this is what we do. We manage to accomplish this without a huge advertising budget, posting every 30 seconds in an internet forum and without making ourselves out to be something we are not. No milspec, nasaspec, special forces, dog and pony show here.

Hey Camille, thanks for your reply.

I'm very familiar with the term "milspec" and how loose that is. Colt M4 w/M855 is milspec at 4MOA; most shoot ~2MOA out of the box though. My LMT is 1MOA and it is sold as milspec. I'd imagine all of LMT's barrels perform at that level, they are supposed to be a higher end manufacturer. But, still labeled as milspec.

So I suppose, what I gather from your article, is that I should just inspect the top line distributors and then analyze the numbers given, since there isn't exactly a "known best"? I mean, they all claim to be either "as good or better" than the competitor. As a math major in analysis, this would be very easy to rate them all in different ways using simple linear regression on Excel. I suppose I could post my findings. But I'd rather avoid that if possible. I learned enough math to know I don't want to have to analyze everything in life. And in some cases, qualitative information may be better. Hence all of the questions.

In short, your milspec ITT factory model would be superior to TNVC's in-house model? In your opinion? How about their milspec ITT Pinnacle (which I assume would be identical to your milspec models)? Before you answer, note these models are, in fact, built to milspec (they claim better) in a cleanroom facility not far from L3 and ITT both (a cleanroom is hardly a kitchen table build, IMHO). It also isn't lost on me that most all of the big players in night vision are within a stone's throw from one another.

Likely, I'll probably go with the milspec. I feel you get what you pay for and milspec means I'll KNOW what I get, I'll at least get the upgraded version of exactly what I used be issued. And having been issued these when they were cutting edge with 2 AA batteries... (Jesuspleasus, is there ANYTHING that can be done to convert that shit to 4 cell CR123 parallel wired on the back of the head? --as counterweight and as a way to use one f'ing battery pack and not run out of charge all at the same time?)

NASA spec huh... Funny, I grew up in Rocket City USA. There actually is a NASA spec, but I don't think they call it that. One guy I knew signed a NASA spec hammer out of the tool room at Marshall Space Flight Center (he was there doing a security system, not a NASA employee) and they didn't take his custody card. He tried to return it, they wouldn't take it back, but complained how that plain looking (but stainless) hammer was, in fact, a $200 hammer (years ago), and how big of a deal it will be now that a sensitive item has gone missing. Even though it was right in front of his face, knew damn well it was a NASA hammer. Oh, the moaning and bitching he said! In the end, they told him to take it home, knowing good and well it was NASA's, and proceeded to fill out reams of paper to start an investigation and to replace the (lost? stolen? given away?) hammer. It just broke the chain of custody and they didn't want anything to do with it after that.

So in short Camille, I don't think you wanna get into NASA specs!

I had the above wrote out earlier today, didn't post it until much later. Since I wrote it, I've talked to a fellow at TNVC again. Wasn't able to contact you guys for some reason? Will try again tomorrow though, along with Morovision, etc.

Now one guarantee TNVC is willing to put in writing for me (I requested this) is that their TNV/PVS-14 will have a noticeable difference in image quality over a military issue model, and that if it doesn't, I can return it for the milspec or full refund, my choice. That's standing by your word/work if you ask me. By this, I don't just mean comparing to any old milspec model; he's willing to let me take it on post (am just getting back my base privileges) and go visit an infantry unit when cleaning arms while they have 'em out, and/or my old acquaintance at the gunsmith shop at SFG, and compare them against several of the issue models. And I know for a fact, if the guy I know is still there, then he should have some cases of brand new, unissued milspec 14's in the SF cage that I'll be able to inspect too.

That is a fine guarantee that makes me feel pretty good about the purchase, considering I'm not a gambler at all. Would you be willing to extend the same guarantee over your 14's? I don't really need any reasoning as to why or why not, just will you do that, yes or no? If so, and in writing, that would certainly narrow down my list and put you in the (currently) top two.

PS, I don't spend time on Barfcom, no account, but articles come up in Google searches from time to time. One fellow asked about NODs distributors and of the three he asked about, two were banned permanently. As in they couldn't even be mentioned on the site (which sort of killed the guy's question, as TNVC was the only "allowed" answer of the 3). They refuse to tell why. Are you, or do you know of, those companies that are anathema to Barfcom? My only real reason for wanting to know is that this guy seemed to have done some homework and had a shortlist but 2 of 3 couldn't be mentioned at risk of threat (what a shitty site). Note you being banned or not from a site like that won't bother my decision any (but I'd avoid any banned from this site, as you really have to straight screw someone over on here or piss off Frank with talk of politics). Just curious what his top three were narrowed down to if you know.

Thanks again, and I suppose I'll be waiting to hear from you about that guarantee in writing, which if you extend that to me, will pretty much seal up the deal between you or TNVC or maybe one other, and if your prices for the same milspec kit or model is the same as TNVC, then I'll just be forced to flip a coin.

We have absolutely no problem with you comparing our unit side by side. I’m glad you are doing your homework but Id wonder would any/the companies allow any user to do that or do they know you are just posting on the internet and questioning quality/mil-spec units. All of our customers will receive high performance, image clean systems, period. Alright there are several PVS-14 milspec systems on TNVC’s website.. I’m not sure which one you are asking about. Why do you not ask for tube intensifier numbers before hand? Then ask about the screen quality before hand? Then once the company has told you X, Y and Z systems are available with these specifications. They should be able to ship them in 1 – 2 days and you can easily say yes this company said X system would have these specifications (real numbers) and screen quality and it seems to match. Then you can take them to the gunsmith shop and compare them again.

Mil-spec units are great but the problem is that companies will claim to sell mil-spec and then send the customer something entirely different. Darn, I thought we had a stroke of luck with our NASA-spec! To be clear there are several great night vision companies that are honest with great customer service. However, typically they do not spend time on internet forums and do not have as impressive as a website compared to others. I am not going to discuss over the internet which night vision companies we would recommend but I’d be glad to over the phone.

As far as “barfcom” we have never posted on the forum or even had a username. Mmm politics do extend outside of the Whitehouse. I probably cannot say anything else about this matter on the internet.

Hopefully that answers the questions in both of the 2 posts.

Tubes

I bought several brand new tubes last year L3 filmed and filmless auto gated plus Pinnacle mil-spec and commerical spec. That said if ordering a tube/system not instock the only guarantee I was given was it would at least meet min specs for that tube model/type but no promises for anything higher number wise. If the dealer has tubes instock(in their shop) they can hand pick from that stock some dealers maybe charge for that and it's fair in my opinion since it takes time and effort to check screen quiality and specs plus you are asking to cherry pick the best from their stock. That all said specs aren't everything good screen quaility is a huge plus for any tube. A omini 7/8 mil spec tube is a safe bet for getting a good overall performer That said I would perfer a hand selected unit if avaiable is on hand to choose from.

I do not know a lot about the technical specs of the tubes. I have bought several from Mod Armory and been more than satisfied with both the yubes and the customer service. It is outstanding. I have bought from a lot of folks and Mod is the best. Hunter did hand select both my latest PVS-14 and my D-740.

I bought one thermal device and after having used it a while wanted to move up to the next level. Talked to Hunter and he had exactly what I wanted. Made me a deal I could not turn down.

They will get my business. A lot of people can sell a product but few provide the level of customer service I have gotten from ModArmory.
