Ladder test at 200?

Would 200 yards be sufficient for a ladder test? There is a range that I can shoot 300, but it is a range full of jackasses and this weekend will be full of crazy people buying rifles at the last second for deer season and trying to figure out how to sight them in. I have a friend that has a spot that is 200 yards, and it will be just us two rednecks putting rounds down range at whatever pace we want. I know I'll be more comfortable and un-interrupted at the 200 yard private spot, but I guess if 200 yards isn't enough for the ladder test I'll make it to the range. He mentioned we might be able to squeeze out 250. My normal shooting "range" is 2 hours away and being harvested or I'd have no problems shooting to 3 miles if needed

Try it. I did one today shooting off the top of my truck with a bipod and a wadded up jacket as a rest. I think I got w hat I need from it but time will tell. I was at 300 yes.

You can still get some good data from 200yds. Besides, trigger time is always a good thing.

300 is almost to short 400 to 500 is way better. at 200 yards you wont be able to see enough vertical variance to tell you what you need to know.

Worst case scenario; It'll look like a crappy looking 2"-4" ragged 40 shot grouping

If it won't kill ya to burn some powder and projectiles I agree with everyone else.

I'll be curious to know the results you come up with in terms of separation.

Agreed. I tried and aborted through one string at 200 before because of the lack of separation.
Reloaded that string and shot and 400 at a later date. At least I walked away with a little chrony data to log.

I did my first ladder test today at 300yds. I was pretty happy with the results. The clusters were 0.5"-0.7" vertical variation but I was able to see the shifts. It also correlated almost exactly to my ocw testing at 100yd. Fist time though so take it for what its worth!

I guess I'll give it a try at 200 and see what I get. If it's not enough variation then I'll head to the range and figure out how to put up with the new kids with their shiny new rifles getting ready for deer season

dg 400 is real hard to beat. far enough for spread to show but not so far you get blown off or effected by crazy wind crap. load dev. done in morning and afternoon, no wind of course.
