I know all the talk about Lapua starting to make 260 Rem brass. Has anyone actually laid hands on a pc of it yet?
Isn't it expected to be late spring before quantitys start to arrive?

I'm with you, Dan. I've go too many Rem URBR cases necked to .260 to be very excited about the new Lapua 260's, although I did buy a couple hunderd Lapua 22-250 that are now 6mm/250's.

Re: Lapua 260 Rem brass neck thickness

I first heard that the brass would be arriving in April. It is now May, and I still can't find any of this brass. Has anyone even seen any of it yet? Or is Lapua famous for saying it will be here "next month" and continuing to say that for eight months?

EABCO notified me yesterday that I will have my brass by this Tuesday (10 May).

Apparently, there was some problem with the shipping containers on the way across the pond.

Re: Lapua 260 Rem brass neck thickness

Is anyone actually going to discuss Lapua .260 brass neck thickness in this thread?

A poster on another forum had a .260 built and it chambers .243 Lapua necked-up brass fine, but .260 Lapua brass is NO GO.

Observations? Comments?

Re: Lapua 260 Rem brass neck thickness

I just finished measuring neck thicknesses on a 100 ct. box and they ranged from .0147"-.0153", with the majority measuring .0149"-.0151" thick. So, I guess I'll be turning them a bit to fit my chamber as my reamer has a ND of .294".

I also weighed these and they ranged from 171.7 grains to 172.7 grains dispersed as follows:
4-171.7
4-171.8
1-171.9
8-172.0
24-172.1
19-172.2
12-172.3
11-172.4
10-172.5
4-172.6
3-172.7

Re: Lapua 260 Rem brass neck thickness

So what is the measurement on a loaded round with lapua brass.

I'm having one built and want to ensure the current reamer will accommodate lapua brass without neck turning.

I would rather buy a reamer than neck turn.

Re: Lapua 260 Rem brass neck thickness

I just ordered a PT&G reamer for my 260 build. I got a .295 neck being built. So, lets say I DON'T use lapua brass, am I still too tight? I've seen good accuracy with plain O'l factory Remington brass, I may use that. Its half the price as Lapua and I've seen some Lapua brass primer pockets get erectile dysfunction after one time firing with moderate loads. It doesn't impress me much.

If I went with the .2965 as recommended by PT&G for Lapua brass and use Remington brass, will this affect accuracy?

Lets say I end up using Lapua, how much of a pain is it to accurately turn brass? Seems to me if you can get neck turning down right, that would be better than an open throat and no neck turned crappy brass.

Summary question: What is the ideal neck diameter for a reamer?

Re: Lapua 260 Rem brass neck thickness

If you are going to turn your necks at all, as some do to get a more uniform neck wall thickness, you might as well turn it to a thickness to correspond with the neck diameter of the reamer your having ground. This would call for a reamer that would have a small enough neck to compleatly clean up the thinest neck of any of the brass you intend to use. If you want to do that the neck diameter is up to you. This will not only improve accuracy but will allow you a LOT more reloads out of any brass. You must be careful in making sure that your brass has enough room in the chamber that it is not being pinched by the chamber neck and causing excessive pressure.
Accuratly turning brass is like most things, until you learn how to do it right its a mystery, after you get it down it is simple enough to make you wonder how you were ever mystified by it. If you do try turning brass I would stay away from the lethe type turners and go with a hand held and a power screwdriver. Thats only my opinion but one shared by a lot of guys.
You have to remember that with any tight neck you must be very sure that your loaded ctg. neck has room in the chamber not to cause a pressure problem.
