Okay i am loooking to buy some new brass for my savage .308 model 10 fcp, the question I have is what brass do you think i should go with i am currently using some old remington brass (not impressed). I am either going to buy Lapua or Winchester brass (and i am not opposed to try others). I shoot in F-Class 600 yard matches, and plan on taking it out to a grand. I am using 168 and 175 smk's as well as h4895 and cci primers. Although I may be switching to 4064. I feel the neck tension on the brass i am using is very poor. Thanks in advance for the help

All I shoot is Lapua. I bought a bunch of once fired FGMM off the hide here when I first started shooting long range matches and never could get it to shoot very well. Lapua is consistent.

Now that I've bragged on Lapua, I opened and prepped 4 boxes of new Lapua brass that I'd had sitting back for a year or so and ended up tossing 3 pieces and wasn't real pleased with some of the other. One piece got stuck in my Lee collet die and I had a hell of a time getting it out. When I did the neck was a tenth of an inch longer than it should be. Not sure if it started that way or if getting stuck in the die caused it. All of the bad pieces had dented necks.

Don't have any experience with Win Brass, but I have to tell you I bought a 500 rd case of Lapua .308 brass thinking I'd be set for a looong time & wouldn't have to do much if any brass prep. Wrong.... I was actually pretty disappointed w/ the variances I saw in terms of case weight & especially neck variance (ranged from .0140 to .0155 - I ended up turning em all down to .0140). Granted it was better than the Hornady brass I was using, but far from perfect.

I've since read that recent production Lapua is not as good as it used to be. Can't confirm since I haven't used the old stuff, but I wasn't real happy considering what I paid. If you're willing to do the work, I would take the advice above & match prep Win brass and you'll be better off.

Good luck trying to buy any WIN .308 brass. I scored some in march 2013 and have not been able to find anymore since. I just bought 800 pieces of once fired PMC brass for a low price and I am waiting for it to show up. Hoping to get 500-600 decent pieces after prep to use in my gas gun. At least if you buy Lapua you can find them in stock... (@ $0.70-$1.00 a case though.) Use gunbot to look for best prices on brass.

I shoot both and haven't seen a difference in accuracy using 4064 or varget. Don't waste the time weighing brass. Neck tension is what is important. You can't go wrong with either. Lapua has a good reputation so go with Lapua but I have 500 pieces of Winchester that have been awesome

I use both and both work well. As far as accuracy, in most of my rifles I cant shoot the difference... accept one and I think that the thicker neck in the Lapua is the reason in that rifle as if I use Lake City (91 head stamp) I get the same improved accuracy and it too has a thicker neck. As for longevity both have held up well with moderate loads, if I push them hard for max velocity Lapua primer pockets tends to last a couple firings longer... but I have moved past running super hot loads. The issue you may run into is finding Winchester brass.

Only you and your rifle will be able to tell if Lapua is worth nearly twice the price of Winchester.

Anneal the necks every third or forth firing and run modest loads and both will last a long time.

Lapua is good....Winchester is good.

What do you want to do with it would be my question.

Lighter bullets with fast powder, go lapua.

Heavy bullets with slow powder, go Winchester. Much more case capacity for those long stick powders.

Dont mess with weighing the cases unless you are confident that you outshoot your rifle.
