Guys I bought a new POF 308 and was wondering if anyone has had problems with slam fires using federal gold medal large rifle primers in the big ARs. For ARs with small rifle primers I exclusively use CCI 450s as they have a hard cup and with a floating firing pin this helps reduce the chance of a slam fire and I would like to do the same with the 308 AR.

Never had it happen, never heard of it happening. Only heard of the possibility of it happening.

There are CCI primers, I think it is #34...? It is a mil spec primer that supposedly is designed to prevent slam fires (harder cups). I have been using them but I bought them before really asking questions. It seems that the general consensus is that slam fires really aren't a problem and most people are going to tell you to just get normal primers. I am using them just because I have a couple thousand to use up! I am thinking about doing some comparisons to see if they have any effect on accuracy compared to a normal primer. I just haven't got a consistent enough load to try it yet!

I HAVE had it happen and I have seen it happen one other time. In my case, it was with M855 ammo across the pond so I am not sure if it was grit or ammo problem and the other case was on a reload with a primer not fully seated flush and was a remmington 7 1/2. Fortunately both cases the rifles was pointed in a safe direction.

+1

I've never used the hard-cupped nato primers for my AR15 or AR10 either.

I think its a good idea to use them, but of course, the MOST important thing you can do is keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction at all times. This is always important, but those using an AR/M1A/Garand/similar should be aware of the danger of slamfires.
