MT is stuck in a shitty situation. We need the federal road $ for the tourists to keep accident rates down. I can't go anywhere without seeing an out of state plate in the summer.

On the upside, all our county roads are gravel which severely limits tourist activity. It also limits how long I can go without coating my rocker panels with new bedliner.


We probably should have a sales tax to let the tourists take on some burden, but once it starts it never ends.


My property taxes, state income tax and vehicle registration are fairly high, but I'll take the trade for only needing a $1 bill to buy a $0.99 pop.

I'm not sure what you are saying with this post, so I'll comment free form. CA spends more than any other state on welfare with total welfare expenditures at $98.5BB. On a per capita basis New York sits at the top position with $3,305 per person with a total expenditure of $19.85BB. Alabama ranks 36th on a per capita basis.

The title of the article you posted, Most & Least Federally Dependent States, is laughable. It includes funding of every sort and leaves open for debate on whom is more dependent on whom, the Fed gov or the State.

The article includes contracts. Alabama has the worlds greatest concentration of rocket scientists and it should be no surprise that this industry gets a fair number of federal contracts. This is one of Alabama's largest contributors to its economy. Some of the funding for those contracts comes from foreign entities but need to be funneled through the Dept of State so they did not originate with the American taxpayer. My main point is that it might be a stretch to equate aerospace, advance manufacturing, and bio-science spending to Gavin Newsom's desire to (further) pour cash into the pockets of illegal immigrants. Gavin wold certainly disagree.

This is about as rich as it gets. California is the largest welfare $$ suck in the country and is comparable to some western nations. Yet they are less dependent than Alabama???

The reason CA and NY have the balance of payments they do (and you should look at something more recent than 2013) is because of Silicon Valley moguls and Wall Street titans, respectively. It just so happens that these folks far out earn pretty much anyone. They don't need welfare and they pay a lot in taxes. They also happen to be a fairly small population. So what could possibly explain the massive welfare tab.... hmmm, it seems to be vast populations of poor, indignant, non-earners. And Cali seems to have a constant thirst for more.

Maybe I'm just silly, but buoying a giant welfare state is not the same as a federal expenditures for highways, schools, or even space ships.

I am not dismissing the concept of corporate welfare or pork that goes to less populated states due to out-sized representation. I am laughing at the concept of a state with an existential need for such vast sums of federal welfare spending being deemed less reliant than states with a much quieter sucking sound.

For anyone that thinks you could just raise the taxes on the vast sums produced by Silicon Valley/Palo Alto/wherever tech, you can't. Well, you can. But then they leave. Salt Lake City, Raleigh-Durham, Austin, and even Huntsville have been the happy recipients of firms fleeing Cali.

The corporate tax rate in Cali is 8.84%. Move and you can cut that in half. Cali has no wiggle room. Further wealth extraction from the Larry Ellisons et al is not possible. And they have got to feed that ever growing welfare class. They are hooked on those Federal welfare bucks.

Here's my prediction. Before all this COVID shit is over with we will have the making of the greatest bailout in world history. Mortgages, munis, state and local municipalities, pension funds, large manufacturing sectors, and much more. This is about as rich as it gets. California is the largest welfare $$ suck in the country and is comparable to some western nations. Yet they are less dependent than Alabama???

The reason CA and NY have the balance of payments they do (and you should look at something more recent than 2013) is because of Silicon Valley moguls and Wall Street titans, respectively. It just so happens that these folks far out earn pretty much anyone. They don't need welfare and they pay a lot in taxes. They also happen to be a fairly small population. So what could possibly explain the massive welfare tab.... hmmm, it seems to be vast populations of poor, indignant, non-earners. And Cali seems to have a constant thirst for more.

Maybe I'm just silly, but buoying a giant welfare state is not the same as a federal expenditures for highways, schools, or even space ships.

I am not dismissing the concept of corporate welfare or pork that goes to less populated states due to out-sized representation. I am laughing at the concept of a state with an existential need for such vast sums of federal welfare spending being deemed less reliant than states with a much quieter sucking sound.

For anyone that thinks you could just raise the taxes on tech, you can't. Well, you can. But then they leave. Salt Lake City, Raleigh-Durham, Austin, and even Huntsville have been the happy recipients of firms fleeing Cali.

The corporate tax rate in Cali is 8.84%. Move and you can cut that in half. Cali has no wiggle room. Further wealth extraction from the Larry Ellisons et al is not possible. They have got to feed to welfare class. They are hooked on those Federal welfare bucks.

Here's my prediction. Before all this COVID shit is over with we will have the making of the greatest bailout in world history. Mortgages, munis, state and local municipalities, pension funds, large manufacturing sectors, and much more. It will be the COVID bucks extravaganza and Cali will be sucking the Federal tit harder than any of them.

Oh, and BTW, just when things have settled down a bit by mid July, “Covid 19, round two will hit right around Labor Day and will be pimped long enough to try and influence the elections, probably through the end of October.

Newsome is now trying to blackmail the feds in to granting assistance by saying first responders will be the first to be laid off. Why don't they lay off some of the other worthless trough feeders first? Pols always use this tactic; threaten to take away whatever the public will miss the most to get your way. Need to pass a bloated school bond: threaten to take away buses, sports, music and etc.

Being home for almost 2 months I notice a lot of City work being done, fixing sidewalks, tree trimming. All this in residential neighborhood. I've never seen soo much. Like every cracked sidewalk.

Not only were they all Non-Essential

I'm wondering if they aren't running up the bills in a spending spree so they can come back later and claim Some form of assistance.
