We mow about 6 acres of rolling to steep hills in WV. Brother in law and I both have Husky mowers. His is a Kohler motor with 48" stamped deck with two blades. Mine is a Kawasaki motor with 48" fabricated deck with three blades and a locking differential. I would recommend the fabricated deck and locking differential for less than perfect landscape. We have to run chains without the differential. I've downright abused mine, and I have to constantly remind myself that we have a 72" bush hog for the tractor.

I would stay with the other's advice in the price range you're looking for. My next one will be a Kubota BX series. It's in the league with the commercial mowers, but it's a small tractor.

Couple years ago I bought a used Hustler 54" Fastrak SD for my home lawn (lot is 0.33ac) and mowing on my property. At my land I treat the thing damn near like a bushog, cutting 12" grass (dry only!), going down trails, popping up over roots, mowing small woody stems, etc. Its a tank that only needs its blades sharpened. I probably have an acre and a half of grass around the barn and pond along with a bit of road frontage that I cut, and the Hustler gets it all done in probably 60-90 minutes.

Mowing my home lawn used to take an hour with a 21" Honda self-propelled push mower; with the Hustler it's about 20 minutes.

My next one will be a Kubota BX series. It's in the league with the commercial mowers, but it's a small tractor.

After researching the BX and JD 1 series TO DEATH last year.... the JD 1 series was IMO the "better" machine. And at least around here, price wise, there was no real difference. Lots of people "claimed" the BX series was thousands cheaper than the 1025R... but that wasnt my experience.

The JD had FAR MORE attachments, accessories, mods, etc... than the Kuboto BX.

Are you comparing to the BX1880 or BX2380/2680? The 1880 is quite cheaper than the others, and it shows.

And what attachments? I just want to mow with the capability of a small tiller, aerator, etc. We have other machines for implements.

The 1880 wasnt comparable to the JD 1 series at all, even the 1023...

I was comparing the 23xx/26xx to the 1023/1025.

JD drive over deck is fantastic... Kubota drive over deck option was universally regarded as dog shit.

JD hydro's offered a LOT more options to get the tractor to do what you wanted. Kubota offered nothing in this regard except going aftermarket.

IIRC the JD buckets were better than the Kubota buckets, but I cant remember why. I know they attach differently, but that was kind of a wash IMO, but I think the physical buckets were better.

There were quite a few other reasons that I cant remember, price being one. Like I said EVERYBODY claims their Kubota was thousands cheaper than a JD, but that just wasnt my experience. I do remember the Kubota being "cheaper" but not THAT much, maybe 500-1000 cheaper than the JD... but the way I wanted to setup the JD from the factory was not a problem... doing the same to the Kubota would have required me to go aftermarket and not be as integrated.

Anyway, its all moot because I got a Gravely zero turn after really soul searching and realizing spending 20k+ all in for what I wanted when 98% of my usage would be mowing and all 6k+ in extra's I wanted the JD 1025R for(tiller, front end loader, etc...) would only really get used like once or twice a year and I would be way better off renting equipment to accomplish those tasks.

That is exactly why I only want one to mow. We can walk over to a different piece of equipment for those tasks. I can't do a zero turn due to the slopes. I want to get away from the belt drive and overall cheap design of most mowers. Using a BX as a mower will last a long time.

My zero turn has no issue on slopes... Im sure I am running it on side slopes that are in excess of what it should be used on. There are only 2 parts of my yard in a drainage culvert I wont take my zero turn, but to be honest a tractor wouldnt get in there either, they are to steep and to narrow.

See if you can find a dealer to let you demo a zero turn... a bigger one, not a small residential one... see if it works for you. This is what convinced me to go zero turn instead of a small tractor.

Also look at the JD X700 series... I also was STRONGLY looking to go there, but the fucking prices are RIDICULOUS... like same level as a 1025R/BX... GREAT deck, shaft drive, diesel option, awd available, aws available... basically the CADILLAC of riding mowers...

GOT me a SCAG Turf Tiger, then downgraded to a Tiger Cat.. 52", I know I know, it's too big, but hey, lets me finish mowing the lawn before I start sweating, also the 15mph cutting speed is nice if I do sweat. You can pick one up used for cheap 2500 if you look around, that's what I paid for mine, it work good, LAS LONG TIME...

Go balls to the wall and get a used Toro GM2100 Reel mower. Be that guy in the hood with golf course quality lawn..... never mind the part where you have to mow every day to keep it short. lol. But 1500 would be tight for a decent new riding mower. That kind of money, I would get a Toro TimeMaster, but that is a commercial 31" push mower.

Might be something you consider; get some quotes for yard maintenance and see if you'd be better off just paying someone.

I've got a neighbor who goes through everything you mentioned and I bet he spends 20 hours a week on his lawn in the summer. He has 1/5 of an acre. and a lot of it landscaped. I'd never do that. As long as the dirt is covered in something close to green, I'm happy.

my neighbor and I are going to split a semi truck load of sand this spring to top dress and level our lawns. Not so we can cut them with a reel mower, but so that we dont scalp them in random places because of the SHIT job the home builders sod guys did on smoothing the dirt before putting down the sod. Zero fucks were given that day.

That sucks, but hopefully will look great next yr. If you ever have sod put down again, put harley rake prep in the contract.

its at least a 2 year job from everything we have read and talked to people on. They say dont try to fix deep spots all at once.

I’m just curious here, how many hours per season do you think the average Joe spends on a riding mower for a sub-acre property?

Mmmn say a 1/2 of grass is a good sized lawn depending on your geo- location may-July is peak grass growing season also how much water and fertilizer? (if you are bagging you can fill an 8’ bed on a pickup) if you are mulching you need to cut it twice a week if you want the best look .A rabbit trail .... sorry. Probably 3-4 hours a week some places a little more. Blow out the air filter every week. Use synthetic oil 2qts and a $ 4.00 is a cheap way to keep the engine clean by changing often.
