Got approached last week about being out with a rifle at night with lights...local law thought we were poaching deer. They had never heard of predator hunting at night with lights and they certainly didn't believe there were coyotes in the area. A couple of cell phone pics cured that notion real quick, but they suggested leaving a note on the dash of my vehicle indicating that is what we were doing so that they might have a better notion of how to approach us if needed. They were quite a bit nervous approaching two guys in full camo and rifles to say the least.

Think this will suffice?

It's never a bad idea to leave a note on your vehicle, including time you left the vehicle and any returns you made for supplies, lunch, etc.

a compass heading from vehicle as to your direction of travel is not a bad idea either.

Not saying anyone is incapable of walking 500 yards away to hunt and come back without issues but ya never know what could happen.

Re: Leave contact info on truck while pred hunting?

same here, i leave a note both at night or during the day, both for predators or "regular" game.

besides the police or game warden taking intrest on a suspicious vehicle, or in some instances someone getting it towed, the note certainly helps out.

when i go out just before or after dark, i take the shotgun and rifle, and depending on the area (if moving spot to spot) i'll grab the stick that's appropriate. i had my father in law call me a few years ago as he was listening to the scanner and heard my name. apparantly the local fuzz thought the same thing - they seen a truck with guns, ammo, camo etc. in a vehicle at night parked off the road, and ran the tags. the police also called my house with questions for the wife, her response was "i'm surprised this is the first time you've called on him while he's out hunting".

so yes a note is the shit, i have several tucked in my glove box, "hunting deer" "hunting coyote" "hunting woodchucks" etc., and put it on the dash along with the cell #.

if anything, it's a good safety practice also.

i've actually had neighboring "nosey" farmers check out the truck, and actually contact me to come hunting critters on their land thanks to the note.

Re: Leave contact info on truck while pred hunting?

The note is cute. Now all the deer poachers have to do is get a predator hunting note and they are good to go? Sounds like the local LE needs to brush up on what is legal in your state. Nowadays everybody with a cell phone is a wannabe cop. I hear them on my scanner calling in on old men for driving too slow. Your incident reminds me of the "SS Roadblocks" they set up for "impaired" drivers. They always ask, "Where you headed?" I just tell them, "West." being interpreted, "none of yer damn business..."

Re: Leave contact info on truck while pred hunting?

Oh I'm a big fan of putting notes on vehicles and such, not just because something might happen, but you need to know where your hunting partner is.

An example, last fall I was elk hunting with my wife and grandaughter. One afternoon they took a hike without telling me which way they were going. So as I set in camp I spot some elk, can't shoot them because I don't know what direction they went. Turns out I would have been ok, but I didnt know that at the time.

I guy I work with had to shoot in the air to get the attention of the tow truck driver about to tow his car while coyote calling in rural south dakota. It was 5 degrees and near dark. The tow truck driver told him the sheriff had called in the tow. This year I will be putting a sign on my window too.

good point, but if the local LE or game officer is worth any snot, they'd stick around a bit to see what the truth is.

Re: Leave contact info on truck while pred hunting?

i'll post a pdf with form fields for you guys as soon as I can fix the wife's pc. mine is running on a borrowed psu right now and going thru a total rebuild. hers just took a dump tonight and I had not noticed all the interest.

Re: Leave contact info on truck while pred hunting?

finally got the PDF resurrected (actually forgot about this until i saw the document in her PC...

so if you want a PDF with the contact info omitted, i'll email it to you. drop me a PM and it'll be on the way.

on a side note...heading out tonight, with a buddy...some big fields and some smaller woods, taking 22mag and something bigger to reach out and touch them. My kill lights not enough on my 308, so i'm sticking close with "little Thor", just got 8" of snow dumped up until 8am this moring, winds out of west at 7-9mph, fresh tracks and a dog infested area - this should be GOOD...

Re: Leave contact info on truck while pred hunting?

made 3 sets last nite. Odds were against us from the start, but we gave it a go. full moon, 7-9 winds to the east, and CRUNCHY snow...we tried to make sets with as little walking as possible.

First set was backs against some hay bales, wind at our backs and a woodline with a firebreak/powerline behind that about 200 yards out. set the caller out 50 yards in front of us and started with lightnin jack...changed it up a little...nothing after 45 mins so we bailed. time to thaw out. second set was similar, but overlooking a good rabbit field that I personally harvested half a dozen bunnies from in the fall. there were bunny tracks everywhere so we had high hopes. Ran various rabbit in distress, then tried some challenge barks/howls...nothing.

thawed out, and moved about a half mile to the last set for the night. again, wind at our backs, with a pine grove behind us, overlooking a field with some good structure and well used trails. we waited about 10 mins before calling to let everyone forget about the crunch crunch of our walk in, then fired up lightnin jack again. 2:50 into calling, a nice little red sprints out of the pines not 3 feet from me, almost cranks his head off the muzzle of my rifle...i was totally caught with my pants down on this one and the gun was in a very relaxed position...i tried to get it up but the second he crossed my scent cone, he didn't even look to see where I was, he hit the afterburners and made a 90 to the left ducking behind trees. I barked at him but he would not stop. Jeff switched over to a fox distress call in hopes of turning him around. he circled down below us to the edge of the field but i just could not find a hole to punch him thru, nor could we get him to put the brakes on. If fixed bayonettes were in use...I think i could have skewered him instead of trying to find him in the scope and get the kill light turned on.

I now know why most seasoned fox hunters carry a shotty full of 4 shot. shotgun would have meant fur in the truck...instead we left with awesome memory of my first full moon all nighter. got back home around 230am to a wife who had decided to wait up for me...it was a GOOD night
