Lee 3 Jaw Chuck - Anyone with experience?

Recently purchased one of these to go with a Lee zip trim. After following the instructions, I'm not sure if this thing is defective or not.

I'm screwing it CLOCKWISE onto the spindle (as per the instructions) and while it screws down on the spindle fine, it opens up the jaws if the outer ring is turned clockwise. Based on the instructions, it would seem as if the jaws should CLOSE when the outer ring is turned clockwise, not OPEN.

As it stands now, the jaws open up with the revolution of the trimmer and the case falls out.

What am I doing wrong here?

Yeah its a bit wierd a thing to get used to help myself to hold with one hand (a part with string attached), insert case and twist it down real good with another (case must be aligned against wall so its properly centered... I think there are videos of this trimmer on youtube...

Yeah, I just checked out LoneWolf's youtube video...mine turns the opposite direction to tighten / losen the chuck.

What are the chances of getting a defective one? Weird. Gotta love Lee!

LOL!

I use mine with a drill in the saddle of my gun cleaning kit. I LOVE IT. I use it for cleaning cases and trimming. It's as fast as my $200 rcbs trimpro and I think it does a better job.
I haven't used the trimpro in about 2 years and it cut my tumbling of brass in half. And as you look at it it closes as it goes clockwise.

Okay...just to close this out.

After sending an email, Lee sent me a new one, before even receiving the old one...pretty good customer service.

Now that I have one as it was designed, it's working great and is MUCH better than the shell holder provided with the case length gauge.

Good gear.

The Singer rocks... I have always been trying to think of a "easy" foot throttle set up; Dremmel, mod'd extension cord for a drill, etc. This may be the ticket and the weight of the sewing maching is a plus over a cordless drill.

Mind sharing the Singer model number? May have to hop on E-bay...

Re: Lee 3 Jaw Chuck - Anyone with experience?

it says "merritt 2404" but i bought the first one i found that looked like it might still work. cost $10 IIRC but came in a disgusting pink case and had pink trim. it was pretty easy to graft the chuck on, but gutting the machine took longer.

it shouldn't be too tough to make this work with other models. the motor on this model looks kinda wimpy, but works fine for trimming/prepping cases. i've been keeping my eye open for a little heavier duty machine for cheep.

Re: Lee 3 Jaw Chuck - Anyone with experience?

I use a Lee trimmer /battery drill and think its a great bit of kit. Certain people have told me I need to get a fancy adjustable trimmer, but I'm not sure what advantage that offers???

Anyway, I want to say thanks to kranky and 1sikpupi for their pics. Both are excellent ideas...
