Does anyone have experience with a left hand gain twist in .223 A/R? I'm doing another build for a competition gun and while thinking about a longer barrel than my current setup, heard @lowlight talking about these barrels. Not going 224 Valk, I really don't want to add to my pile of dies, brass and stuff.
Cheers

No,

This is what people are not understanding with Gain Twist barrels the other benefit I have found and what he is talking about in the videos is Bullet Weight.

Gain Twist barrels don't care about bullet weights the same as a standard rifle profile. As the video talks about 223 competition shooters, Service Rifle, in this case, use different weights as they move out to distance.

In my experience, and I have at least 6 barrels now, they dont care, My Prime Load zeros in exactly the same place as my 136gr custom load. You cannot tell the difference except at distance when the velocity and BC start to kick in.

The ease and accuracy of a gain twist should not be understated because not everyone can do it right, so they consider it a waste of time. not so, I have been specifically getting Gain Twist barrels for all my recent builds in the last year. It works and has very little downside.

The idea it was for heavier stuff is not true, smaller stuff can be spun wrong and come apart quickly because we tend to push them harder.

Lotta knowledge bombs in that video. The guy compares barrels from his time as an armorer to the custom Bartleins. I'm not sure if that is an accurate comparison as maybe a non-gain twist custom to a gain twist barrel.
If I don't go too crazy on the twist, what are the downsides?

It's interesting that you mention the service rifle guys and gals are using a more aggressive gain in their barrels. I just asked Frank Green from Bartlien about spinning up a LH gain twist barrel for me that would be either a 16 or 18 inch barrel in 5.56 for shooting from 55 grain to 77 grain bullets. his recomendation was a 8.7 to a 7.7 twist rate. Maybe it's the length the barrel is going to be plus the weight of the bullets. Since I don't have any experience with either gain twist barrels I'm relying on Franks expertise on the subject since it should be more than mine.

I am using it with my Valkyrie boltgun

I am running a 7.2 to 6.5 I believe it is, I don't remember exactly.

And how's that working for you?

I've been looking for a decent production Bolt Rifle in .224 Valkyrie in the $1000 range but surprisingly there isn't that many options. I was hoping Ruger would have added a RPR in .224 Valkyrie along with the introduction of their new Magnum offerings.

A buddy did a gain twist barrel for 1000 yd service rifle competition, worked great. He was shooting Berger 90s in a 20” 223 over 2800 FPS. I think it was like a 7.5-6.5 twist.
