Legal Question - Hypothetical Situation

You only have 2 choices, first believe it is registered and find the stamp, second if you cannot find the stamp, hire a knowledgeable attorney to interface with LEO to see if there is an NFA record or otherwise surrender the weapon. There is no way you want this coming back to you.

while we are on the subject.................If I will my suppressor to my son and I croak it will take him 7 months to get a license.
Who holds the suppressor in the interim?

You could solve the issue by eventually putting the Suppressor into a trust and then when your son is old enough have him on it so if something happens he still has it with no delay.

this video is your exact topic

Worth reposting.

HermosaBeach did hit the nail on the head, it's worth a watch. As mentioned, the gun might be registered under another name (an uncle, or a serial number/description might be on record with numbers transposed. There are also dupes. Not mentioned is you could have a stamp and the ATF may have lost their record.
