Rifle Scopes Lens cap interferes with ERGO rotation on USO

I just received a new ST-17 from US Optics. I like it a lot and have no complaints. I have owned Leupold Mark 4 scopes up until now.

I did not anticipate that the lens cap, when open, would prevent the full rotational movement of the ERGO objective. The open cap runs into the barrel in each direction before the maximum rotation of the ERGO is reached. So I set it up to go from about 75 yards to infinity. What I gave up was the range down to 50 yards and the range "beyond infinity".

Do you guys do anything differently?

Really with the ERGO from what I have been told it is MUCH less sensitive than a scope with side parallax. I actually think you could set it to 200 yards and it would be fine from 75 yards through to 400 yards. I have one USO with ERGO but have screw on cap for the end. Next one will use butler flip up and I plan to do something similar as to what you have done.

I went ERGO as I wanted some higher magnification on this heavy barrelled rifle and be able to quickly get it into focus etc. I have found with SB and NXS side parallax you NEED to fiddle to get image right......an ERGO not so much ,set and forget for the majority of field/hunting....when you have time to fiddle its there.

But like you I wont care about missing the adjustment below 75 so much if the flip up works for the rest of its adjustment range.

On my SN-3 i have it set at 100 at all times the flip up lens cover when opened flips at a 90 degree angle to the right giving me enough room to rotate 180 degrees from 100-inf. Hope this helps, thats how i solved mine.

If you are really worried about it I have a suggestion, Ive usd it a few times but some mall ninjas dont like it. It was done on the fly but ended up working.

Get you hands on some bikini style covers like NF uses. If you have the 44mm obj they will likely be a little loose on the USO. I took some electrical tape and ran it around the obj housing until the bikini fit well. Problem solved.

If you are one of those people what worry about how your rigs looks then this may not be for you, but then again... if you really want a cover...

Just an option.

It appears that depth of field is not deep like on a camera set at f/16 (bad example for people who don't know photography). I sat at a bench this past weekend to zero the scope. The target at the 50 yard range was blurry when the ERGO was at about 75 yards (my minimum). I worked with it anyway, just shooting at a blurry target, since I'll never work that close again. I will likely be in the 200 - 400 yard range most of the time. I did adjust the focus on the eyepiece when the scope arrived. The reticle looks nice and crisp when aimed at a blank sky.

I do exactly what Blackops 2 does. I've got mine set up to just clear at 100yds and that gives me clearance to get all the way to infinity. I'm not real concerned about parallax inside 100, just dail the power down.

KNIGHT11B4 is right on the money. A bikini cover or another type of removable scope cover is what you should be looking at because your current setup isn't working. My Unertl rode with an old sock for a scope cover for years and I never had any lens damage, and it also never got in my way.

Not saying to stick a sock on your scope, just saying you don't need flip caps to have protection.

That's what I described I was doing - for 75 yds to infinity.

I cut the hinges off, and stick the cap in my pocket when it's off....

Another options is to purchase a screw on cover from USO. Will have to send your sunshade/ARD in for threading. It solves your problem once for all, but you've gotta get used to taking the cover on and off.
