I'll be picking up my new Savage FLCP-K next week and need to get a scope for it. I've been looking at the Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 4.5-14x50mm M1 but now after reading a lot on here I started looking at the Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 FFP EBR-1 MRAD.

Looking to see if anyone has done a side by side comparison.

I've tried searching a few different ways and have come up short.

Thanks for the link Cold. I have the opportunity to get either scope for about the same price. So with that in mind is the illum reticle and the FFP of the Vortex a better choice over the Leupold or is the Leupold still a superior glass?

That is a very hard call to make for me, my experience thusfar with the Vortex has convinced me I will never buy another scope that isn't FFP MIL/MIL. But the Leupold is also a bulletproof scope with great clarity and it just plain works every time!! so does the Vortex, but I've had the Leupold for much longer.
Both these scopes are mounted on .223's, and I have taken both of them beyond 1k. The gun under the Vortex does it better/farther, but I would feel just as confident with the gun wearing the 4-14X50.

Thanks for the site. I totally forgot about shooterready. I have been testing it out and have been using mil/mil and meters.

Just ordered the CDs so that will be some god training while the Vortexs come in. 4 - 8 weeks backordered. uggh

Re: Leu MK4 vs Vortex Viper PST

I'm a big fan of MIL on MIL scopes the MOA on MOA will work but I feel I'm more effective with MIL on MIL due to the fact the system is in 10s. I recommend staying away from mixing them (MOA turrets with MIL RET).

The Leupold Mark 4 M5 are really nice scopes and are well made. The PST are very nice scopes also and for the PRICE they are really nice. The PST are hard to beat for the price.

We have both the Leupold Mark 4 M5 in stock and the Vortex PST. If we can be of help feel free to ask.

I can see where mixing moa turrets and mil reticle could be a receipe for disaster. the more I think about it I prefer the mil/ mil rather than moa/moa.

The Savage is in I just need to go pick it up next week so I'm itching to get the glass and bipod so I can start shooting lol.

Re: Leu MK4 vs Vortex Viper PST

I dont have any love for Vortex so Leupold for me if I had both on the table..Every one should know how to use a mil reticule with MOA/IPH

Below is quoted from a smart man on the hide..Doc76251

The reticles in the scopes subtend in measurements of an ARC.

The only difference is in the divisions on the reticle and how small or large the white space is and how accurately you can determine the distance between each stadia.

Why don't you have any love for Vortex?

I like the FFP of the Viper but I do want to put them side by side.

I just got off of work so I'm going to catch some zzs then head up to CS Tactical to check them out.

Re: Leu MK4 vs Vortex Viper PST

My Leupold Mark 4 ERT M5 has been rock solid since I got it in October. It has performed perfectly on my 300 winmag, and was very clear and crist when deer hunting at dusk with the snow blowing hard

Re: Leu MK4 vs Vortex Viper PST

I bought a 6-24 PST FFP MOA & put a Vortex Custom Turret on it for hunting and love it, but on the off season I am shooting at paper at 1,000 yds. and think that the FFP has the reticule to thick for my target shooting.

I shoot a 6mm Norma BR. which is shooting way under 1/2" 5 shot groups at 200 yds. I want to get my groups down under 4 inches at 1,000.

I'm going to try my old BSA 8-32 SFP with a fine cross hair and 1/8" dot for the 1,000 yds. I think I will be able to hold better inside the X-ring with the much finer reticule.

What are turents?

Look at my 1,000 yd. target here where the temp. & humidity changed drastically from the month before. I got late to the shoot so I didn't have time for sight in shots. I was approximately 1.5 clicks high which is about 3 inches high. 2 clicks down would put me dead center of the 10 ring. So the Custom turret would not be very far off at 1,000 yds. If you have not used one that is accurate don't think they are not consistent. Shooting up & down at big angles makes a bigger difference. When shooting up or down all you need to know what the actual distance and turn the turret for the angled distance. Very easy and much faster then entering in your "DOPE" each time you have to shoot. If you don't have a laser range finder or it stopped working and you don't have a ranging reticule then you need the "DOPE". That's why they call it "DOPE". Hee Hee.
