Leupold has a history of getting gov contracts without much effort.
Vendors are not allowed to charge the gov more than they charge the public.
It seems a reasonable conclusion Leupold is pricing their scopes high because they are expecting or already have a cushy deal with the military.

I just saw this listed and almost shit myself. Leupold did a GREAT job of being competitive with S&B and Premier. In fact, Leupold won the contest for most expensive, and they did it by over $1300! Congrats Leupold! You win!

that's fucking ridiculous. I'm not buying one of those now. It's not even much more compact than the 'short' dot
which is a fuckin foot long, so much for a compact optic. I might just buy a cheap aimpoint and wait for the next gen of actually compact 1-8x type optics

You all can cry and preach all you want. I have two of the M-TMR reticle MK 8 Leupold CQBSS 1.1-8X24 and I LOVE them! I bought one for my brother and one for myself and he has decided to wait until after the first of the year and get one with the H27 reticle. Without a doubt, the BEST scope I have and I have a lot (S&B short dots, Zeiss, Leupold, Swarovski, NF, USO). I have owned many optics and I have found the one I will run with now. It will be a long time till somebody comes up with something to beat the CQBSS! Before you all go beating the heck out of me, please remember that we are fortunate in that we can buy from many manufacturers and everyone has thier own taste. This is why some may buy FORD and others may drive a RANGE ROVER or even better..EarthRoamer XV-LTS!

I luv the Ford comparison. Ya know, Ford pretty much "poked" its customers for GT40's at (low) Farrari prices at one time way back when and still does. But look at the history of LaMans, they spanked Farrari, can you say "1...2...3"? The new GT40's eat most Farrari's for lunch. This from the same company that builds the Focus today. Just because a company concentrates on the workin man's needs dosen't mean it dosn't have the technology or the ability to build something exceptional.
I'm not dedicated to any one make or model.....auto, scope, rifle, etc. If it works I keep it, if it dont, I get rid of it. My thoughts....this would have to be a hell of a piece of glass to be worth that kind if coin but lets let Mike@CST or someone else do a real T&E on it before we jump on the bandwagon and bash the shit out of them. This site is known for its no bull shit policy and making even the best put up or shut up, let's keep it that way.

Ive shot the new 6.5-20 psr leuppy and im certain it wasnt on par with Hensoldt or S&B optically regardless of what some gunrags say and yes i had them side by side on the line.

I don't know anyone that would pay 4k for a scope and admit its a POS, luppy has figured this out,screw you so bad you would lie to yourself over the reality that you paid 4k for a pos and a luppy at that.

I was one of the first people to jump on the "HOLY $H!T" bandwagon when news of this scope hit, but my concerns were based on the seemingly ridiculous price point for this optic. I'll also admit that my reservations are based partly on experiences with Leupold QC and two different broken Mark 4 scopes in the last few years...neither of which were user error or scopes that had been put through the mill. Between the incredibly high price tag with the new Mark 8 offering and my irritation with paying $1k+ for scopes in which I don't have the same faith/confidence in as I did many years ago...I immediately wrote this one off as the little white speck on top of the chicken sh!t Leupold has been crapping out (different, yes...but still chicken $H!T at the end of the day).
Now, with all that said and to be perfectly fair...I think that we all owe this optic a chance to prove itself with folks like Mike at CST and others to put them through their paces. At a minimum, tests like that will help to determine whether the scope is at least worthy of consideration and up to snuff whether I (or anyone else) thinks the price is insane! I genuinely hope that this optic marks a turning point for Leupold and shows that the company is getting its sh!t together now and for the future.

Played with one of these at Ft. Benning 3 gun, they are on the right track but not there yet. The reticle washed out when looking into shaded forest, dot wasn't bright enough on low magnification. Turrets seemed ok but I didn't really twist on them either. At this point I'd rather have the new Votex 1-6 for 1/4 the price.

I completely agree with you and I can promise that regardless of how well they perform...I won't consider one (much less own one) while the price is anywhere NEAR the point it is at now. I just don't want to be one of those people that judges a book by its cover without the proper insight into what's contained IN the book (you know...the people I b!TCH and moan at on this and other forums all the time).
The price sucks and there is no arguing that point considering all of the other options in this class of optic.

their 20 year R&D investment in how to make a 34mm tube, w/mil adjustments, wo/ a canted reticle......Duh

Keith (Bronco) definitely knows his way around low power variables. This brief review would seem to add to the outrageousness of the price point vs quality of the scope.

$4K and it doesn't even have a daytime usable red dot? Really? What waste of effort...I can't imagine why anyone would buy that over a S&B Short Dot or a Elcan Specter. Does it at least come with a courtesy reach around?

Its me, I played around with the scope for a few months, shot a bunch of pictures, and did a lot of shooting with it. My write up for Army Times/ Military Times should be up next week.
I kicked it around on everything from MK18s to MK46s, did accuracy work and room clearing. I make no claims of being a scope expert, but I did get pretty comfortable with the optic.
Here is a quick picture of it on a MK18 setup from Monty at Centurion Arms.... it may not be the best of ways to mount an optic shown below, but for the limited time I had it, it worked well enough. I later moved it to a KAC riser so it wouldn't be spanning the rail and receiver.

So do you think the Leupold is worth the $4K entry price? How about compared to the S&B Short Dot and/or the Elcan SpecterDR?

The rings are from American Rifle Co. With an optic this expensive, I didn't want to play around with mounting marks.
I can't answer if its worth $4k, to me its not, but thats because $4k is a lot of money for me. For someone else, it may be worth every penny. This one is the MTMR variant.

So I finally got to take a look at these in person. I saw two reticles. One was a illuminated circle and the other was an illuminated crosshair. The crosshair version is DEFINITELY, DEFINITELY **NOT** daytime usable. The circle version looks like it'll be daytime usable but when magnified, it had pretty bad bleeding/ghosting. I also couldn't get a straight price from anyone. I heard anywhere from $2900 to $4000 retail.
I also looked at the new S&B 1-8x with a very interesting "CC" mode (it's "below" the 1x setting and it basically resets the parallax for optimal 1x use, pretty cool feature). I can say WITHOUT A DOUBT, the S&B would be my choice.
